Memphis Tiger, Tyreke Evans, much like LeBron, OJ Mayo, and Sebastian Telfair received a crazy amount of hype in high school. This kid even had his own trainers provided for him from his brothers, who called theirselves Team Tyreke. That being said, he has not lived up to the hype thus far, in his freshman season in college. I don’t see him being a future franchise player in the NBA, but a very solid player, that can put up points in bunches. Tyreke reminds me a lot of Larry Hughes, their both 6’5, great flat out scorers, steal the ball at a high rate, can’t really hit from deep, and they both can play some minutes at the point guard position.

To compare Tyreke Evans to Larry Hughes is not fair. If You can recall. Larry Hughes was a sure Lottery Pick. A Very intangable guard. Tyreke Evans is nobodies point guard. Larry Hughes was an All Star for Washington a few years back. I don’t think Tyreke has the work ethic yet. Larry Hughes was an 20+ ppg scoring guard with a good field goal percentage in college. Tyreke, at this time is going to have to get a shooting Coach. Because once Xavier Henry comes in next year. That’s not Tyreke’s team anymore. Income a guy with a killer instinct.Tyreke lacks heart and his shot selection is terrible. Larry plays both positions well. Tyreke can’t create his shot yet. He can create a turn over. But not a good shot. The college game took away his lethal “high school crossover”. Notice I said High School crossover. It’s actually a carry, but he had the Micheal Jordan rule in high school. Did no wrong and couldn’t be touched or it was a foul..He needs allot of fundamental work..”Team Tyreke” better higher Mark Price to help Tyreke learn how to really shoot the ball..

Larry Hughes used to play both positions well. He doesn’t anymore. He sucked in Cleveland, Chicago, and New York (with the exception of about 3 games in NY). Both Cleveland and Chicago couldn’t get him out of town fast enough, with Chicago actually deactivating him. Chicago wasn’t world beaters by any means, but they were a playoff team. How could Larry Hughes not find a way to contribute? Well, because he is a ball hog who doesn’t know how to pick his spots or his shots. The player that we all saw in Washington doesn’t exist anymore, he just shares the same body with this current guy. Hughes was on Cleveland and they went to the Finals, where he lost his minutes to a guy named “Boobie”. “Boobie” was so amazing that the #1 off-season target for the Cavs was a point guard. When the Cavs got rid of Hughes, they also shipped another PG out of town whom Hughes stole minutes from. You can watch this guy getting minutes starting this Thursday, June 4th at 8:30 Eastern time on ABC. So on a team like Cleveland he is the…I don’t know…5th best PG they have had there in about 2 seasons. In a town like Cleveland, where they have experienced NO sports success in any of our lifetimes, fans had a website called:

Then, less than 1 year later and Larry was on the Bulls inactive list. If you can’t stay on Vinny Del Negro’s good side, you have serious problems. If you are going to say that Tyreke Evans lacks heart, you are making a huge mistake by saying that Larry Hughes has heart. I think that people in 3 different basketball cities would disagree with you.

In all seriousness, he has been affected by the loss of his brother. That is definitely a reason that someone’s game could suffer and I don’t think anyone on this board would disagree. If you are out of it mentally, it is extremely hard to prepare for an NBA season. That being said, he is what he is. He should be able to accept the fact that his game has changed and try to earn his bloated pay check in another way. But, he seems to think that the entire coaching staff in Cleveland and Chicago, both playoff teams this year, don’t have any idea what they are talking about. NY better get him out of town after this next season if they plan on making a run at Lebron. If I were Lebron, I would have a pretty good memory of the guy who couldn’t swallow his ridiculous ego in order to help our team in the Finals.

Of course, Tyreke Evans may be the same way, but the way you are describing him NBA teams are going to be playing hot potato with him until his ROOKIE contract runs out. I don’t think that will be the case. The Larry Hughes who actually gave a crap about team basketball and played defense at an all-world level? That isn’t someone I see with Evans yet either. But I would take Tyreke Evans over the CURRENT Larry Hughes 6 days a week and twice on Sunday. So would 30 NBA GM’s.

I actually think Evans is a little underrated as a prospect. He looks like the second coming of OJ Mayo (a little soon, I know). He is being asked by John Calipari to provide scoring from the shooting guard position and he has delivered, not to mention he has been the go-to-guy in the clutch for Memphis. Sure maybe his shot selection and decision making seems a year or two away from being an effective player, but wasn’t that the claim most scouts were making about Mayo last season? And OJ has all but delivered, albeit on a young but improving Grizzlies team. Most sites have Evans going in the late teens/early 20s, but he seems to me to be more of a lottery-type player, especially in a weaker class like 2009.

By the way, are the Grizz not a carbon copy of the Rays and the way they stockpiled all of these talented youngsters until one year they collectively matured into a World Series contender? Give them a couple of years, and the Grizz could really be a force in the West. That is, of course, all dependent on an ownership change or them landing Blake Griffin this year, whichever comes first.

I see the OJ Mayo comparison they have similar games and they both have been asked to do a lot of things as far as running the point and scoring.He could end up being a better pro than college player much like OJ.For some players I think the college games restricts they’re effectiveness and I think thats the case with Tyreke.I would like to see him stick around another year at Memphis just to round out his game.And plus I would like to see him play with X.Henry.But both are fair omparisons but I think he’ll be a better pro than Larry Hughes.

I never thought of Evans as a good prospect really, OJ is a much better shooter and scorer period. I could see Evans as a late first rounder if he stays till his senior year. But yeah, Henry is going to take over and if John Wall goes their too, Evans will probably have to transfer lol.

He won’t be great until he changes that shot of his which is horrible looking and inconsistent, he has handle and his length is ridiculous with a reported 7-3 wingspan. He just needs to stop dribbling to much let the game come to him. He’s played well the past 2 games but their against low-cellar opponents.

Evans is nothing like Mayo. Mayo is a pure shooter without much of a slashing game while all of Evans’ points come off the dribble because of his bad shot mechanics and selection. He’ll be a decent player in the league but probably a Jamal Crawford type.

I like the the Crawford comparison, but I think OJ,Crawford,and Mayo are all good big guards.They all are combo guards to some degree and have been asked to run the point at different times in there playing days.I agree they’re are some differences between OJ and Reke, the drive aspect of Reke and the shooter mentality of OJ are very different.Reke is going to be a good player not great and should probably be compared to just good players and not guys like OJ that are future stars.Larry Hughes and Crawford are guys that fit more in the catagory of the kind of pro Reke will be.Think he will be a little better than L.Hughes though.

I am guessing that you meant the younger Hughes, not the current Hughes (even though he is still young and shouldn’t be as terrible as he is). If you did mean the current Hughes, I don’t know what to say. He’s terrible. I just hate him so much I had to post about it twice.
