Man, I love trade deadline season. Every name under the sun in trade rumors…and then nothing happens…!

I was reading a Bulls post the other day, and it got me thinking about what I’d do to improve their roster, what guys are available, and what could be done.

There’s a few guys in the NBA right now whose value is at an all-time low, and could use a change of scenery. A trade that involves multiple low-value guys is a great way of getting a trade that’s ‘win-win’ – because the change of scenery does them good! Three such guys:

DERRICK ROSE: Poor Derrick. We’ve seen the highs, put up with the lows…and now, he’s playing like a league average starting point guard…if that. 16ppg 5apg…PER less than 13…41% from the field, and 25.5% from 3 (his worst 3P% since his rookie season)

TY LAWSON: Drink-driving aside…Houston just hasn’t worked out. At all. His worst numbers ever by far…but still playing 23 minutes per game.

DWIGHT HOWARD: Man, if you’d have told me 4 years ago (when Dwight was averaging 20ppg, 14.5rpg, 2bpg, 2apg, and 1.5spg) that he’d be where he’s at in his career now, I wouldn’t have believed you. A lot of that is mentality, but he just seems to have bounced from one bad situation in LA to another. He’s only 30 – if he finds the right situation, a bit less pressure, and sees a bit more of the ball, then he should be fine.

So, with those three in mind (given that all of their contracts finish in 2017 so there’s pretty low risk for both teams involved), I got to thinking about what sort of trade could be worked out between the Bulls and Rockets. One thing that seemed apparent – given their last attempt to play together, any trade involving Howard to the Bulls has to involve Pau going the other way…!

Therefore, as a starting point… Howard+Lawson for Gasol+Rose…who says no?

It’s difficult – Gasol is having the better season, but Howard is five years younger, so I’d say probably worth more over the long term. Right now, Gasol fits better with the Rockets though. Rose vs Lawson…Rose is playing better, but Lawson’s season is a clear outlier on his career, and he doesn’t have the same injury history. But Rose probably has more value.

So it’s actually pretty even, I think. There’s loads of assets you could throw in if you wanted…Mirotic, Gibson, the Kings pick, Jones, Motiejunas, McDaniels, and so on.

    So my questions are:

    1) What do you think about the principle in general? (not that specific trade, but Houston as a location for Rose/Gasol, and Chicago as a location for Howard/Lawson)

    2) If it was a flat 2 for 2 offer – who says no?

    3) What would you do to balance the trade?

Chicago would be reluctant to trade D-Rose given he was "the face of the franchise" and they would get a fraction of what they might get if he was back to his peak.

With someone like Pau Gasol if a good offer came in for him then the Bulls may consider if but if he has indicated he’d like to stay then moving him would seem stupid and they may not have cap room to resign him.

I’d say that any none key player on a lottery team could be on the trade mat if the offer was right. I don’t see a blockbuster deal going down but maybe someone like Waiters at OKC might be moved as he will be an RFA and they will have cap issues.

Hinkie will be looking to add any assets for salary dumps so may have Philly as a willing 3rd team in any deals.

Rose is done. What you’re seeing now that’s he’s peak.

I agree, of course they’ll be reluctant. Doesn’t mean it won’t be the right move for the franchise.
