ExumInfernoParticipantPhoenix needs to make changes, Boston needs a taller defender in the middle, this might work.
Chandler can’t really play next to Len, but Amir Johnson can. Phoenix also have the option with his money, they can keep him next year or let him go as a free agent and clear money.
Johnson next to Sullinger gives Boston an undersized starting center. Chandler would make them bigger, and give the team a shotblocker.
The money for this season is close, so the trade works with no other pieces. Boston does miss out on some future cap room, but if they want to compete for a playoff spot now, and it looks like they do, that isn’t a big problem. Suns get to have more financial room for rebuilding, and get minutes for Len.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantThis…is a really good trade proposal. I wish I could give multiple +1s. Even if Chandler flamed out in this scenario, Johnson didn’t really get much burn for Boston this season anyway, then there is that top 5 pick from Brooklyn this year and probably the next. Nothing for Boston to lose from doing this, and more to gain…

BleedGreen808ParticipantI’m iffy on this deal because of the long term money owed to Chandler. The Celtics definitely need a starting center that can hold their own down low but how much does Chandler have left at 33 going forward. His contract has three more years on it at about 13 million per year, compared to Johnson who has a non-guarenteed 12 million next year. How much does Chandler really improve Boston’s chances of competing in the playoffs? Our defense is statistically one of the best in the league but the inconsistent offense has been the problem for most of the year.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantYou’re not seeing the big picture. In this scenario, in a couple of years, the Celtics will have 2 top 5 draft picks (unless the Nets somehow get a Durant this summer, lol) on their ROOKIE DEALS along with their current core and they add a fantastic veteran presence in Chandler with a championsip pedigree for the young guns to learn from. Aside from somehow trading for a young superstar at the trade deadline (which isn’t gonna happen), this is a masterful trade proposal, for both teams.

BleedGreen808ParticipantThat’s why I said I’m iffy on the trade. If it was Chandler for Amir both on 1yr deals this is a no brainer. The difference is Chandler is locked in for three more years after this season which limits options with cap space going forward. Chandler is tempting because he’s a defensive anchor that can guard centers like Brook Lopez who dominated Boston today. However, I feel like this would be a short term move that would improve the team now but it limits the ability to go after free agents and make trades in the future. Ainge signed Johnson and Jerebko to two year deals with the 2nd year for both non-guarenteed. He did so to preserve cap space for next offseason while creating 17 million in non-guarenteed contracts that could be used in a a potential big trade.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantThe limitations of having Chandlers contract on the books is minimal- the Celtics barely have any large contracts as stands, David Lee and Amir being the only ones making 10mil+, and with the cap jumping over the next 3 years, you will still have plenty of money to make runs for big name free agents. Even with Chandler having a few extra years its a no brainer because of how hard it is to get quality vets into a locker room.

natevalParticipantI dont like the deal from the Celtics side. Celtics would only slightly improve but be stuck with that bad contract. I’m sure Chandler is great in the locker room but this Celtics team already has great chemistry. Less risk with Johnson who’s played pretty well and is respected in the locker room already.
Celtics need to make a major move or no move at all. Chandler doesn’t make Boston all that better.

HitsterParticipantAs a Phoenix fan, we are struggling and whilst I’ve always been a big fan of Tyson Chandler, I’d happily do the deal as it would free up playing time for Len. Boston probably do need a legit defensive anchor but would they want to tie up $39 million on Chandler over the next 3 seasons I wonder.
Chandler is a good locker room presence but Johnson is alsoa very solid pro having spent time with the Detroit guys likeBen Wallace etc.
The Celtics aren’t win now so have no need to push this trade through as it takes up cap room for the next 3 years too.
If Johnson’s contract is totally unguaranteed for next season then that is a huge trading chip for Dnny Ainge if any tam wants to save cap space, he can bring a player in effectivey for the value of Johnson’s $12 million contract.
Remember when Dallas traded Erik Dampier’s unguaranteed final year contract to Charlotte ironically for Tyson Chandler and the next season Chandler helped them to the title.
A + 1 from me for a good trade idea, ticks a lot of the relevant boxes but I don’t think Ainge would do it.
