GabnosisParticipantHey guys, I was wondering if any of you could give me players who were GREAT in High school with potential to be "One and Done" but stayed in College for too long and saw their draft stock fall.
Players who are actually battling for an NBA spot or even players who are in Europe now?
Thanks guys

Scott42444ParticipantThat was mine! He would have been a Top 10 pick if he would have left with Blake. I used to look at Mike Conley as a player who similarly rode the coattails of his "big", but he is actually darn good.

GrandmamaParticipantPerry Jones and Devin Ebanks. Yeah, they only stayed for two years. If both had entered as freshman though, they would have been drafted much higher.

Jester87ParticipantHe had lot of hype coming out of HS, but he wouldn’t ve been a first round pick probably had he jumped straight out of HS. No that anyone even considered a possibility. He showed flashes as a frosh at Florida, but mostly as an athlete, while his basketball skills and development were pretty disappointing. There were also a lot of question marks on his maturity. I don’t think he could’ve never been drafted much higher had he left earlier

he was a fringe 1st rounder last year and their was a real possibility he’d slip to the 2nd.

Poythress was the 7th rated prospect and now he is a 4 year player that will be nowhere close to the lottery.

ShamarParticipantHe was JUCO player of the year and all SEC as a junior and was potential number pick…after his senior year he wasn’t even a first rounder.

Scott42444ParticipantSee, the only reason I don’t agree with any of these is because these guys "slipped" in the draft (I agree with you on EVERY one of these guys, they all would have been drafted higher) they still were high enough to give them a chance. Guys like Willie Warren, they would have been a top 10 pick. Instead, he slipped to the mid to late 2nd round, which means that he had ZERO room for error. Usually, when a team uses (or wastes) a high pick they allow guys to work through their mistakes because the investment of a 1st rounder (plus the guaranteed millions) mean that teams are sometimes forced to at least give them a chance. 2nd rounders can be tossed away without really affecting the team in the long or short term. Now, that doesn’t always work. Guys like Kendall Marshall and DJ Augustin still were not given a full shot. They were THIS CLOSE to being out of the league. But, the got a little luck and have taken advantage of that 2nd chance.

IhateusernamesParticipantI was gonna say Chris Porter as well.
I will also say Michael Redd. Yes he went on to be an NBA all star, but he shouldve left school the year Ohio State made the final 4 and been a 1st rd pick. Instead he went back to tO$U, with the unreasonable expaectations of a better season, and the team disappointed and he went 55th to Milwaukee.

capecodderParticipantIn the mid 90s, GW had a 7′ center from Belarus, I believe his name was Alex Kohl….a sure fire lottery pick his freshman year….each year after that he grew warts and went undrafted and never sniffed the NBA
Also, Alabama had a great point guard (Steele?)….who stayed an extra year and tore up his knee

mike_r232ParticipantWhat about Jared Sullinger and Terrance Jones? Both were in consideration (on this site) to be top 3 picks at one time in 2011. Both stayed an extra year and went 18th and 21st. I like that both stayed to get more experience, but they certainly missed out on some extra cash in that first contract.

Fun one partyParticipantFelipe Lopez was the hottest prospect coming out of high school he stayed too long at St. John’s and it cost him being a top 10 pick instead Lopez was picked at #24 in the first round 1998 NBA draft.Willie Warren is another one that stayed too long.

BasterdInABasketParticipantDominic James. Had a terrific freshman season and there was lottery talk about him. He never developed and his numbers across the board diminished each year. Meanwhile guys from his same class, Jerel McNeal and Wes Matthews improved each year. Him staying made for a hell of an entertaining basketball team their senior year with Jimmy Butler and Lazar Hayward.
