llperez5-al farouq aminu-30 million 4 years……..somenone has to explain this to me. He appears nothing more then a 12th man at this point.8 million per season?
4-robin lopez-54 million 4 years……..hes solid and will defend, but hes also the type of guy where if he is starting, you better be actively looking for an upgrade. Committing long term 14 million a year? I think knicks panicked
3-enes kanter-70 million 4 years…..liability on defense and still growing on offense. GUy has potential and i understand thunder want to win now, but jezz harden wasnt even asking for this much and you told him to kick rocks.
2-reggie jackson-80 million 5 years….wow, i really do like this guy and think he has a good future. But right now he fighting to establish himself in this league. John Wall had a point when he told the media recently that he cant believe he is making hte same money as reggie.
1-wesley mathews- 70 million 4 years….this was a toss up between reggie and wes, but at least reggie still has growth ahead of him and isnt coming off an injury. Mathews is hurt and we dont know if he can be 100%. ANd even if he can, hes nowhere close to an all-star. To make things worse for the mavs, he acccepted less money(57 mill), but the mavs actually decided to willingly give him 13 mill more when deandre backed out.
honorable mention goes to tristan thompson if he can land more then 15 million per like hes aasking

llperezagree completely and he is a name i thought about when making this list but 6 mill cant compare to some of these other deals. Still, detroit had a great draft in johnson but then spends their money foolishly, good luck gundy.

BEARDED-DRAGONParticipantwith the cap expanding, gms were actually challenged to think this free agency. some of them probably panicked a bit. we really wont know if these figures were a good call until maybe 2018. things like kanter getting paid, they probably felt they needed a center to keep kd/westbrook happy and in okc, and 17.5 may look ok by year 3.
reggie jackson, i think detroits in the playoffs next year and may even do battle with wall. is he as good? no. but if stan thinks he can run his offence and with the cap exploding, it became a thought of, if you have the money now, spend it, because cap space is going to mean very little in 2 years.

llperezas for the cap space expanding, we know it will happen, but how much? Adam Silver said 10 franchises were in the red and lost money last year. Not sure how mucht the new tv deal is goin bring in and make teams more money.

sweaterflexParticipantSilver saying teams are "in the red" is more a matter of accounting. Teams can manipulate what streams of revenue are "basketball related," and many teams leverage their cities in to paying for stadiums (like Milwaukee this week). Franchise valuations have gone through the roof, losing $3 million in liquid capital is chump change when your team is worth $300 million more now than it was five years ago . Also, I don’t mind the Aminu signing, he plays defense well and I think he can develop a corner 3. OKC matching Kanter was the biggest mistake.

AKtheLawParticipantI think the Raptors giving DeMarre Carroll $60 million for 4 years is up there in the realm of Rob Babcockian proportions in terms of awful contracts.
I recall many people thought the Raptors overpaid for Amir Johnson’s contract back in the day. He may have or have not lived up to that contract but at least he got it after spending some time with the Raptors first, plus they were paying him based on future potential versus his previous body of work.
I realize this post could easily be dismissed as someone who just doesn’t like Carroll’s game but that’s not true. I know he is an excellent defensive player but he also was doing so on a better Atlanta Hawks team compared to the Raptors. The kind of money the Raptors gave him for one very good season, you’d think he won the Defensive Player of the Year award. He didn’t but he did receive a 3rd place vote. More curiously, he received a 1st place vote for Most Improved Player, and that was the only vote he received for that award.
Carroll certainly fills a gap for the Raptors but I think anyone expecting him to duplicate his success he had with the Hawks is presumptuous. Forget that he’s currently the Raptors highest paid player and forget the fact that the NBA Salary Cap is going to rise over the next few seasons thus making the contract likely one that other players will receive and more. I don’t see Carroll sticking around for the duration of his contract unless the Raptors make some serious Playoff runs.
I know one shouldn’t compare this deal to other big money deals in the past that didn’t work out for the Raptors (and there are a handful to choose from) but comparing this to the other moves the Raptors have made this off season bringing in Bismack Biyombo, Cory Joseph (on what some think is an overpay) and Luis Scola, it just sticks out to me as one that has the makings of coming back to bite Toronto. I hope it doesn’t and I have absolutely no qualms with Carroll making me eat my words with some inspired play next season and beyond.
I’m definitely not an expert on basketball or the NBA. I’m simply a fan. If anyone wants to chime in an explain why I may be absolutely crazy to think the way I do, I welcome the feedback.
Just remember, Mike James managed to score over 20 points per game in almost a full season with the Raptors once. I know Carroll isn’t being brought in to put up career highs in scoring, but with the money he’s getting, the expectations couldn’t be higher for him to prove he can help the Raptors much like he did the Hawks.
Yes I acknowledge I joined many years ago and am only now actually posting, I was certainly a long time lurker that has enjoyed reading what others have commented on over the years. I’m only now wanting to give my 2 cents (as awful and misguided as it may be).
That’s enough from me I’m sure, carry on all.

LOFTYParticipantif I cold give you +5 I would have! im a huge carroll fan but he was way overpaid! I think his contract is even worse than kanters. I know both players well (im a jazz fan) kanter was my favorite player and carroll was my favorite 6th man but those guys are so overpaid! im just glad my team didn’t make any bad decisions this offseason!

Tune SquadParticipantAgreed on Carrol. No matter which sport Toronto teams keep overpaying players for mediocrity. It is embarassing and why you’ll find most knowledgable sports fans in Canada have had to adopt other favorite teams to root for because Toronto teams are horribly mismanaged.
When a rumor surfaced that the Raptors were going to blow it all up this summer after their swift first round exit last year I got really excited at the thought of a rebuild, some high draft picks with potential and maybe a couple of trades for some younger prospects/ players seemed like a great idea. But instead they overpaid for both Joseph (back-up and probably 7th or 8th man in the rotation) and Carrol (one really solid season). You know it is sad when I am actually jealous of Sixer fans because I know they will have a shot at something really special before we do.

thaprodigyParticipantWesley Matthews contract is just atrocious. First of all, he & Parsons could very likely be out until December, if I’m throwing out the max like that I’m hoping putting me in the playoffs or in position for future success, but I see neither. Even if he’s healthy he’s not making them a contender, he’s just making them very very average. At least guys like Carroll & Draymond are either keeping their teams at an elite level or possibly elevating a good team, although both contracts are still horrible to me.
Then we have players like Reggie Jackson & Enes Kanter getting max contracts off of legit 30 games of high level play. Although in Reggie’s defense he’s came up big in playoff games before, but still, he’s not a max player.
I understand all this TV money coming through & how they keep saying that 15 million is the new 8 million, but I don’t care. 8 million is 8 million and 15 million is 15 million & not even being a hater or anything but all the names I’ve listed ain’t worth 15 million., idc.
Side note: I’d be sick if I was someone like Kyle Lowry who signed an extension last year knowing I could’ve got PAID this summer.
But in the words of Jalen Rose "KEEP GETTIN THEM CHECKS"

chrispaulwallParticipantRolo is a legit starting Center. His Per 36 mins are more than solid. doesnt hurt you offensively, or at the free throw line. I dont mind his contract.
Asik’s is far, far worse

Rip255Its Enes Kanter.
His stats show that hes the worst defender in the NBA.
And the things he says are not very intelligent.
Trevor Booker put him on blast.
