knicksfan7ParticipantHow this guy does it year after year amazes me. When we talk about great college coaches we always leave him out. This guy has been to now Six Final Four!?!?!? That’s crazy. I mean looking at last year’s final four, UNC and UConn both did not even qualify and Villanova lost in the round of 32 with arguably better talent than the Michigan State team Izzo has. I give this guy all the credit in the world.

QUINCEYhow you figure hes underrated?..he always gets talked about as one of the best coach’s in college basketball and sometimes talked about as one of the best coach’s in college basketball history

knicksfan7ParticipantPeople on this board do not put him in the same category as guys like Coach K, Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, Rick Pitino, etc. I mean he doesn’t have the future NBA players as some of these other coaches, but college basketball isn’t about that it’s about winning games.

I do…Idk about everyone else though. Most people know that Izzo is a top-5 coach…To be honest, he might be the best coach. Typical Izzo win today. Good for MSU.

QUINCEYwhat peopel would that be?..i never heard anyone make that statement so what proof do you have of this?
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 10:51am #271954
knicksfan7ParticipantI know Izzo is a top 5 coach, but I don’t think many people appreciate the things he does year in and year out.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 10:54am #271958
knicksfan7ParticipantI would like to know this about Tom Izzo.
Would you consider him better than Coach K?
Better than Roy Williams?
Better than Jim Boeheim?
Better than Jim Calhoun?
Better than Rick Pitino?
Better than Bill Self?
Better than John Calipari?0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 10:57am #271965
QUINCEYid put him yop 3….who are these people on here who you say underrate him though?..or were u just guessing?..maybe it was a day i wasnt on here when ya’ll talked about him
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:00am #271968
knicksfan7ParticipantI should have said it another way. I mean more he is not held in the same respect as guys like the ones I have mentioned due to his teams aren’t on national tv as much and he isn’t a guy that produces NBA lottery picks, he just has players that win games. He is like the Bill Belicheck of College basketball.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:01am #271971

DanEboyParticipantHe is my favorite college coach. He keeps a squeaky clean record and his teams are always tourny ready because he is not afraid to load up the non conference schedule.
0- Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:02am #271975
knicksfan7ParticipantHe’s just an all-around great coach. I don’t get why more top players wouldn’t want to play under him. They get to play great competition, go deep in the tournament, and win games.

QUINCEYi figured some people might have said that since there are alot of young peopel on here and i wasnt on for a couple of days last week.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:04am #271977

midwestbbscoutParticipanthe’s never overlooked by me….of all the guys mentioned he is better than all of them except Boeheim who he might be EQUAL with…..not the greatest recruiter ever but as an actual COACH, there is nobody better…..
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:05am #271978
knicksfan7ParticipantQuincey I don’t know about the whole young people thing. I think it has more to do with that Tom Izzo doesn’t coach many high profile players. People will say other coaches to me because they have produced high profile NBA players, and Izzo does not. Though that should have no affect on his legacy, and to the majority it doesn’t.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:05am #271979
McWinningParticipantHes the best coach right now as far as getting the most out of is players. Calipari, if you count recruiting is a slightly better coach right now though.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:05am #271980

midwestbbscoutParticipantand he may be on equal footing w/ K too…..
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:07am #271982
knicksfan7ParticipantMidwest, I agree on the Boeheim, though I have a hard time saying he is not the greatest recruiter because many of his players have won the Mr. Basketball award of there respective state.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:09am #271983
knicksfan7ParticipantBirdzilla, if Izzo had Calipari’s talent either the players would be fed up with his style of ball, or Izzo would have won another 2 National Championships.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:09am #271984
McWinningParticipantYeah Ks up there too forget about him.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:22am #271998

LawDeeZeeParticipantbased purely on track record … i think i have to put izzo number 1 — i’m not a michigan state fan, but i think that from now on when i fill out my bracket every year i’m putting them in my final 4 … the odds seem to be in your favor if you do so!!!
izzo gets more out of his players for my money then anyone else in the country … he doesn’t get the NBA talent of any of the other top guys … the coach k’s, boeheims, calipari’s, calhoune’s … what have you — tom izzo’s track record is just unbelievably impressive to me
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:44am #272024

GrandmamaParticipantLMAO at people thinking Tom Izzo is underrated. He and Coach K have been the two best coaches in college basketball and people have known Izzo is a top 5 coach for the last 10 years. If Izzo could only get the recruits he used to like Zach Randolph, Jason Richardson, etc. You just don’t see really any big time recruits going to MSU.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 11:51am #272031

midwestbbscoutParticipantyeah I don’t EVER pick Michigan State to get upset….I always put them through at least 2 rounds usually except one year I think they were a 9 seed I picked them to go 1 round…..
and he’s not a bad recruiter…..just a notch below the top guys…..and Calipari couldn’t hold Izzo’s jock……Huggy should make Calipari call him “Mr. Huggins your royal heiness sir”….
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 1:29pm #272138
doubledribblerParticipantBest coach in the country. Does the most with what he has and his teams always improve as the year progresses. You really never see Michigan State leaving a season and saying they underachieved. Whoever said Calipari is in the top of the coaching bracket is out of their mind though. Recruiting is not coaching. Coaching has to do with preparation, getting guys to play your system and managing the game. The last few years we have seen how well Cal has done that. I think Izzo could have gotten more out of a team that probably has two of the top 3 guys in the country, another guy that Izzo is a real coach. It’s about running his system and playing basketball the right way. You’re not going to see Izzo spending all game trying to calm a guy down like Cal, and you are definitely not going to see any players tell Izzo to “Get the F*** out of my face” like Cousins did to Cal the other night.
Anyone else see WV doing the John Wall dance the other night?

QUINCEYyeah he does deserve what he gets. i would put him above gary williams because of the final fours he has been to.but i dont know any other coach for a good team in a or the major conference that does more with lil talent
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 1:33pm #272147
QUINCEYim iffy on the best coach in the country though.. might have to tie him with roy williams. i think they both have 2 and both have been to many final fours
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 2:07pm #272189
knicksfan7ParticipantQuincey, Roy Williams has more championships (2) and more Final Four appearances (7) than Tom Izzo. I am fine with Roy Williams being ahead of Tom Izzo as well as coach K, but after that I think among current coaches Izzo is #3.

midwestbbscoutParticipantI gotta give him his due but he gets on my freakin nerves……2 things come out of that man’s mouth…..
“Coach Smith always tought people _________”
and “______ scared the dickens out of me”
God I CAN’T STAND when he says scared the dickens!!!!!!!!!!!

Dhamp2ParticipantThis is odd because I was on facebook arguring about this earlier. Izzo is a good coach but he’s never mentioned among the elite coaches because he hasn’t won more titles. He’s like Jim Kelley in football. I give him credit for only recruting players in Michigan and Ohio, but honestly, there’s a gold mine of talent there so he should win with those players. Many players in Detroit may not be national recruits, but please beleive me when I say that they can ball all out. Also, he doesn’t put many players in the NBA. The ones that do never amount too much. That’s not a knock against him with me, but for some it is.

0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 3:06pm #272247
knicksfan7ParticipantDHamp, Tom Izzo has just as many titles as Jim Boeheim and more Final Fours, so I personally would take Izzo over Boeheim, though I love both of them.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 3:13pm #272256

midwestbbscoutParticipantyeah he scored big this year getting Adrien Payne….
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 3:29pm #272274
Dhamp2Participantknicksfan….Personally I think Boeheim doesn’t get enough credit. I’m glad Carmelo brought him back to life because for a long time Derrick Coleman was the only player who truly represented the Orange in the NBA. Sure there were players drafted, but not all-stars like DC and Melo. Also, coach B has been to three Final Fours. He should have two championships if not for the classic Keith Smart jump shot.

knicksfan7ParticipantDhamp, I personally believe that neither Jim Boeheim and Tom Izzo get the respect they deserve. I don’t think producing NBA players should have any indication on how good a coach is. If that is the case I would say John Calipari is one of the best coaches in the history of the game, but that isn’t true.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 3:35pm #272280

midwestbbscoutParticipantmost of Boeheim’s players come to the NBA w/ just about 0 ability to play man to man defense so unless they are unbelievably talented offensively like DC and Carmelo…..neither of them are particularly good defenders either…..its one of the reason’s I’m a little on the fence about Wes….0 ability to defend is one of the reasons for his falling out with Iowa State…..its almost like Boeheim is an illusionist lol….
0- Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 3:38pm #272281
knicksfan7ParticipantAlso, Wes is extremely streaky at times. Though, I think if it weren’t for Boeheim a guy like Andy Rautins wouldn’t even be considered in the draft. I think the play he had during his senior year was because of Boeheim. I mean it isn’t a college coaches job to get players to the next level, that’s what high school coaches are for. Jim Boeheim’s job is to win national championships.

Dhamp2ParticipantI wouldn’t call Wes streaky. He’s unselfish and to me he can’t go off the dribble as he should. My dad, who knows more baskebtall me, thinks I’m crazy for that. Rauntis should get everything he deserves. He worked hard even in the face of not intially living up to his father’s shoes.
