Kind of having trouble wording this so bear with me,

but we have seen players who go and play for another country in international competition than the country they are normally from. Years ago, a wnba player took a little heat becasue she was not invited to play for team USA. She was born and raised in america and it was the only country she had ever lived in. But because she had ancestry with another country(pretty common in america) she decided to apply for citizenship with that country for the sole purpose of playing for their international team. Chirs Kaman is another example of this where he played for germany despite never having ever been to germany. In fact his parents had never been to germany either and told him they disagreed with him playing for another country.

There are numerous examples of this happening, mostly unknown guys who never made it to the nba but found succes overseas and decided to look up their background so they could compete in international play.

Personally i dont care much at all if the player chooses to do this because its just a game, although i probably wouldnt want to play against my own country. But I do really question why the individual countries themselves would do this. Isnt there a pride factor in international competition and do these other countries really feel good about inviting guys who have no modern connections to their country to play for them and represent them?

Anyways, kind of random but just something i was thinking about and was curious what your thoughts on this are.

Alright i can answer this question with some clarity since im orginally form italy but i grew up in the united states almost my whole. personally if i was good enough to play I would represent Italy, I love the US i live here and everything but my whole family is from italy and I would feel it would be wrong to represent somewhere else, but thats just my opinion, if someone chooses to play for another country they have every right to, i mean like you said it is just a game, and you shouldn’t be considered a traitor or anything of that nature.

one more player that comes to mind Serge Ibaka(playing for Spain, from Congo),

This happens a lot in europe, wide amout of guys who play for one country but are originally from one, for example if a guy who has german heritage/ancestry and is from Germany but lives in Poland, then he might play for the Polish ntl. team if he isn’t good enough to play for the German team, there are a couple more circumstances like this. I would personally like to see players who are from one country not be allowed to play for another, some cases that really p*** me off are those of Stefan Jankovic and Bogdan Radosavlejvic who play for the Canadian and German national teams. They are both Serbia(born there) but moved and now play for thier new countries. Personally I think that these players should be considered diaspora talent who are to play for Serbia Personally for me I could never play for a national team besides mine, no matter what circumstances, even if I weren’t good enough to play for my home country.

I dont have a problem with it honestly. How many talented players that aren’t in the NBA or stars in the NBA are even going to get a chance to tryout for team USA?

Look at what JR Holden did for Russia

I heard that Kyrie Irving wants to play for the Australian national team. He’s associated with them because he was born their while his father was playing pro basketball. I heard that he wants to play for them, but won’t be allowed to.

Yeah but I feel it takes away from the aspect of international competition, one nation versus another. Without trying to insult any black people, but c’mon J.R. Holden and russian don’t belong in the same sentence.

My friend was asking the question ..If America players are so great why do foreign players that are the 9th or 10th man on nba rosters ,can be  so unstoppable playing against nba players in international games? My friend said if nba players were far superior they should stop foreign on any court….

Carlos Arroyo kicked USA’s A$$ in 2004..Memphis bench warmer Hamed Haddadi looked like an all star against TEAM USA last year….

Rudeboy i think its mostly due to players being allowed to play their game under the coaches that know what they can do and have faith in them, while also being on a team full of players and friends that feel the same.

Carlos Arroyo was given the chance to lead(instead of having to stick to Sloans system) and showed his a$$ off against team USA (ask Amares ankles)

Haddadi showed how much of a skilled bigman he really is.. i mean at 7’2" he had All-star forwards biting on pump fakes at the 3-point line.

rudeboy-the US national team plays only about a month together, especially in the carlos arroyo situation back in ’04..thus making it hard to play D, as we all know D is very team oriented

also, on every team there has to be a high scorer which will probly be the best player on the team

what im trying to say is the fact that bench players have good games internationally doesnt make them better than bench players
