As you all know, I am an avid Bulls fan. But this season has been a turmoil for my team. They win games against the top teams (Spurs, Thunder, Cavs, Raptors) then lose on struggling teams (Hornets, Jazz, Suns). I don’t get this team at all. It probably points to several factors but I think they can all be attributed to Hoiberg as a coach. Preseason, we were hoping he could save the team’s struglle on offense but he turned out to be average at best. He was never as tough as Thibs would be on his players. There is no toughness and physicality on this team. People can say Nikola Mirotic is a jacker and Pau Gasol is soft but Thibs convinced them enough to buy into his system which made them a little bit better defensively. This year has been Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This team is probably the most bipolar team I have ever seen. You can see it on Hoiberg, he just doesn’t hold his players accountable. He’s a complete letdwon at this point. He’s still in his first season as a coach and I’ll give him that but this team is going nowhere near the playoffs without that intensity they once had under Thibs.

What are your thoughts on him? Should the Bulls get rid of him after this season?

PS Rose’s assists stats have been down this season. I’m just curious what attributed to this? He’s not a selfish player. He’s a willing passer. Years ago he would average 6-7 apg. This season has been low for him statistically with 4.5 per game. Why can guys like Westbrook and Rondo get 10 apg and Rose could muster only 4.5? I watched them play and I can’t really quite figure out though. He’s been really aggressive this past few games and I love seeing that but I felt like he needs to up his assist numbers though.

You know theyre like, 5th in the East right? They are almost definitely going to make the playoffs. You are overreacting way to much. He’s got the team playing well in the big games, and that’s what matters in the playoffs. It’s not always easy as a first year coach who is still learning on the fly to know how to get on guys, and how to get them up for games against lesser teams. This year is the year you take with the lumps, and with how the teams faring so far, I’d say he’s done a pretty darn good job. He’s a first year coach, you need to give him time before everything will be clicking like you’re expecting.

Frustrated is the key word. I’m not overreacting but it’s been frustrating to lose games we could have won. Yeah, you’re right though. He’s a first year coach that needs more experience but this team is in a win-now mode with Gasol aging, Rose and Butler in their prime. This team is going to make the playoffs for sure but they’re not beating the Cavs nor the Raps in the playoffs.

I said this from the the get go. Hoiberg should of staid to coach the Cylcones this last year. That team was preseason top 5. Yet you go to the Bulls and the expectations are going to be unreasonably high. Rose is broke, Noah is broke, Gasol is old and Butler is a borderline number one option on offense.  The team isn’t bad by any means but if you expect to compete the eastern conference title let alone the championship you’re dreaming.

Once again, I’m not saying this a bad team but it’s not a contender. Hoiberg should of coached one more year and then gone to the Timberwolves.  He’s been in the front office and played with Garnett (whom will likely be in the front office next year).  Most importantly, the team is young and ready to develop. It would be a team that he could inherit as his own and mold for the future. I think Hoiberg made the mistake choosing the Bulls. A mistake he’ll probably pay for after a year or two but I think he’s definitely an NBA coach. The Bulls however, they have to make some serious moves and identity changes to make them a contender in the near future.

    Cheers

Yes i agree your overreacting, I believe the Bulls can beat the Raptors in a 7 game series no joke that boy Butler is a bodmonnnn. Hoibergs doing fine yes there were a couple of games in which they have struggled including the last month or so, but i think there a trade away from being serious contenders in the east, (Korver, Horford) type of trade. Rose i feel is coming along now his game he looks alot more comfortable you have to remember when you tear an acl you still get fear doing certain moves such as sharp cuts because of the unease and pain you felt when he tore it, but i feel that hes getting more confidence when it comes to those type plays. I wouldnt give up on him i mean hes still has elite athleticism i dont care what you say, i feel if they can somehow land Horford to play that 4 spot and allow Gasol to be the 5 that would be a serious team. Idk what kind of assests they have in which would allow them to make that trade, but nonetheless there dangerous, Jimmy Butler is a Beast i mean the dudes built like he play 48 per game, I wouldnt be worried too much, i feel they will make some trades to improve their roster and not deplete it.

Rose played way better with Thibs as his coach, whose offense really wasn’t that bad as people say it was just slow-paced. In Thibs offense honestly I thought there was more movement than the offense now. This offense of Hoiberg’s seems off to me.

It’s all Rose and Butler taking turns handling the rock in the pick and roll. In Thibs’ offense, it’s al about handoffs and backuts with their offense running around Noah and/or Gasol.

The Bulls are exactly what their personnel allows them to be. A top 5ish team in the East that is a clear tier below Cleveland. Doesn’t matter who is coaching that group. They lost in 6 games last year to the Cavs, they’ll probably do the same this year.

I guess I don’t know what people expected from Hoiberg…Jimmy Butler is having an awful nice season. Gasol is solid. They don’t have many other good offensive players. Rose averages more shot attempts than points, Noah looked like a shell of himself, Gibson is solid, Mirotic is okay but he’s young.

That Bulls team missed its window. It just doesn’t seem like theyve got enough. It’s not that they have obvious problems, they’ve got nice players, they are just going to run into a team better than them. And they don’t have much upside left on the roster outside of Mirotic and Portis continuing to get better.

As an avid Bulls fan from Chicago as well, I agree, you’re overreacting. For starters, Derricks assists being down can be attributed more to Jimmy’s going up and the offense running through Pau pretty often. Rose hasn’t been the primary facilitator most of this season. It’s been plenty games when either Jimmy or Pau has had more assists than Rose. And the times when he is passing the ball and setting up teammates, the players aren’t finishing! Defensively he’s been good and he’s gaining more and more confidence in his body, which is great. His reesponsibilities aren’t the same as in the past.

Now, as for Hoiberg, I personally feel like we as Bulls fans put WAY too many expectations on him. He came in and said what he wanted to do with the offense and we took it and ran with it, thinking this was a championship or bust team. I’m going to be completely honest, this team has largely been OVERRATED by the fans. We are currently 5th in the East and will make the playoffs. Thats a victory in and of itself. Hoiberg is working with the pieces he has and that’s not saying much as these pieces don’t always fit…. Has he been a perfect coach? Nah. Is he absolved of all blame? Nah. Is he Steve Kerr? NAH!

When things are good, it’s good. But when it’s bad, we tend to flip out. Everything is going to be ok though.

This isn’t a overreaction to a team thats a so called contender. I guess making the playoffs and going out in 2nd round is now the acceptable thing with this squad. Being from the chi born and bred and being a very BULLS fan this is not the expectation and the inconsitent play of this squad falls on not only fred but management as well. foreman and paxson put this crappy team together gave $20million to an unproven euro player when you could have traded him and got a PROVEN player traded up 2 first rd picks for another scrub in mcdermott drafting tony snell drafting marquis teague over draymond green (which thibs was def against) i can go on and on so for me personally 5th in the east and beating the raptors does not equal a successful season. they beat the spurs cavs thunder during the SEASON but you have to do this 4 out of 7 times and quite frankly this team does not have the leadership or the clutch players or the front office to contend for a ring
