the27guyParticipantEach of the last two years, the lottery has had major implications on the Utah Jazz. This year is no different. But unlike each of the last two years where Jazz fans ruled the NBAdraft.net forum with probably one out of every ten posts being Jazz related up until draft day, this year, the Jazz fans will most likely be sparse on this website. Notice the phrase "most likely"
It all comes down to the lottery. With a 29% chance at getting the number 8 pick, Jazz fans will be anxiously rooting for the teams that are behind the Warriors (#8-#14) to move up.
As most of you know, the Jazz get the Warriors pick if the pick is #8 or after. The Warriors currently sit tied for 7th, with the coin flip going their way.
So, in a nut shell, if you’re sick of all the Jazz fans on these boards around draft time, root for the Warriors…. but for all my fellow Jazz fans, the lottery is "most likely" all we have to look forward to for these next few months, unless the lottery balls bounce the way we want…
GO JAZZ. GO 29% and go get Harrison Barnes!
If the 29% comes true, and the Jazz land #8… who do you think they should pick?

SwatLakeCityParticipantHarrison Barnes is out of the question. There is no way he slips to 8 let alone the Jazz even getting a pick. He’s top 5 for sure. They could package it along with Kanter or Jefferson and get Barnes that way but I don’t think the Jazz will do that. Getting Barnes sounds like a pipedream to me. The Jazz do desperately need a pure point guard so I wouldn’t mind them reaching for Damian Lillard or Kendall Marshall. Either of them is fine with me. Most people would say Marshall without a second thought, but they don’t realize that Lillard is an underrated passer, just as much as he is a scorer. He is certainly a better scorer and shooter than Marshall and a little more athletic, so Marshall and Lillard are really close potential wise and because each can pass well, either of them would work for the Jazz.

kicker16ParticipantIf you draft Harrison Barnes I’m guessing you would play him at the 2. It would be a huge starting five but I have to warn you, as a carolina fan, Barnes does not have the handles you would expect from an NBA 2. But still if he’s there at 8 I think you have to take him as the best player available.
I don’t like Marshall or Lillard enough to pick them at 8. I think the Jazz will probably take one of the top SGs (Rivers, Beal, Lamb). I could see Rivers just because he is a good kid with high basketball IQ which fits the Jazz perfectly.

SwatLakeCityParticipantActually no, kicker 16 if the Jazz draft Barnes, I’d put him at the 3 and have Hayward play the 2. I could see the Jazz drafting a 2 guard, but I like Burks a lot and I think he’ll develop good chemistry with the rest of the team. Besides, with Favors proving he’s ready to start at the end of the season plus playoffs, I think its time the Jazz trade Jefferson. They could land a two guard that way, and for sure he will be better than Lamb, Rivers, or Beal. So I’d rather them draft Marshall or Lillard or trade the pick, and then in the offseason trade Jefferson for a 3 or a 2.
And even if the Jazz do draft a SG, it wouldn’t be Rivers, he is too much of a chucker to me. I’d prefer Lamb anyday over Rivers. Bigger, long wingspan, better shooter, and I think the chemistry between him and Hayward could be pretty good. But like I said, I doubt the Jazz will draft a SG for 2 reasons, one the Jefferson trade possibility in the offseason and they like what they have seen so far from Burks.

JunkYardDogParticipantburks only need some playing time… he is a great true scorer. Next to hayward (and his playmaking and passing skills on the wing) and a true pg he could develop into a nice player.
That’s why the jazz should try to draft a pg : marshall or lillard ? that is the question… maybe trade down to 11 or 12 to get an additional 2nd round pick from portland or milwaukee and grab machado with that extra pick.

kicker16ParticipantYeah I agree if Burks develops then the 2 guard question is answered. I don’t know enough about Lillard but it sounds like people like him and I think he would be the pick here if they decide to go the point guard route which brings up the possibility of trading down.
Is there any chance they take a flier on Perry Jones or someone and hope they pan out? It looks like he has the skills to be an NBA 3 if he develops.

the27guyParticipantUnderkanter, I thnk you’re probably right about Barnes not being there at 7. But I’m not 100%. Look at Knight last year. He wasn’t supposed to slip to 8. Most had him projected 3 or 4… almost nobody had him further than 6, abd then he fell to 8. I definitely think, depending on how the lottery balls bounce, and how well the workouts go, there are 7 gus that could go in front of Barnes. Davis, Gilchrist, Beal, and Robinson are all higher than Barnes in most mocks. If that holds true, and say Perry Jones and Lilliard both get hot and fill needs, then Barnes is sitting at 8. Again, I don’t think it’s likely, but it’s certainly something to look at.
Did you guys see this story on ESPN about the Warriors trying to trade to make sure they get the pick?

apb540ParticipantIf the Jazz get the 8th pick I would imagine they go for Kendal Marshall. I know I would.

ChewyParticipanttanked so hard this year that I would gladly read 100 Jazz posts as long as the Warriors lose their pick!

CodySLCParticipantI think the obvious choice would have to be Kendall Marshall.
Then look to move Millsap for a wing player.(only because he has more value then Al Jefferson)
Derrick Favors showed in the playoffs he’s ready to be the man at pf. And we still have Kanter off the bench. He will only be 20 next year and needs more p.t. to delvope.0 - Posted on: Sat, 05/26/2012 - 1:30pm #674062
GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI read on ESPN today that the Warriors are desperately trying to trade for Utah’s pick before the lotto…Utah should extort them for as much as they can. Frickin Warriors…they don’t deserve any picks the way they tanked the end of the season
0 - Posted on: Sat, 05/26/2012 - 2:02pm #674066
mosdefParticipantthats not correct
the Ws are trying to secure their pick (1-7 protected) so if it lands at 8 or higher it still is retained by GS. They arent trying to get Utah’s pick
0 - Posted on: Sat, 05/26/2012 - 7:57pm #674117
TheLastWordParticipantThe Jazz have many assets and could very well trade for a pick even if they miss out on the GS one. Jefferson, Harris, and even Millsap will be on the block for the right price.

j1232eParticipantIf I was the Jazz i would tell the warriors give us your 30 and 35 pick, or Brandon Rush. Then we will lift the resriction this season. I am pretty sure next season it is top 6 protected. So if GS stays unhealthy the Jazz could get a pick around 6 next season.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 05/27/2012 - 3:27am #674147
mosdefParticipantthe former GS GM now head scout, Larry Riley actually altered the protection from a top 11 to a top 7 protection.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 05/27/2012 - 5:42am #674173
SwatLakeCityParticipantActually j1232e, the GS pick is top 7 protected for 2012 and 2013 drafts, top 6 in 2014, and if a pick is not given to the Jazz by 2014 then the Jazz will get two unprotected second round picks, one in 2014 and the other in 2016.
If I were the Jazz, I wouldn’t even be listening to trade offers from the Warriors. They are only doing this to secure a lottery pick. You shouldn’t reward a team for tanking, ever. So if they lose the pick then hopefully that lesson will be learned.

no skillsParticipanti am a jazz fan and i believe in karma. i say no deal to golden state and let the balls fall and hope karma hits golden state hard for them tanking like they did… and if it does drop to us i say take the best pg
