llperezjust wanted to give a shout out to the best pg i have ever seen play. I’ve watched Magic and Stockton and Paul and DWill. Im not saying Gary Payton had the best CAREER of them all. But in his prime, give me the glove. He was straight nasty on defense. He gaurded the other teams best gaurd every single night. Tim Hardaway one night and Michael Jordan the next. People forget how well Payton defended Jordan in the 1996 Finals. Jordan averaged 27 points, but on 41% shooting and was locked up in the decding game 6 to the tune of 5-19 field gaols and 5 tunrovers while GP was in lock down mode all over his ass. I want to compare his intensity on defense to todays players, but all I can think of is linebackers in the NFL. And he talked more then anybody.
His offense was no joke either. Best mid range post game I have seen from a pg. He had the up and under, the fade away. He hit jumpers and ran the fast break with Kemp as well as anyone possibly could. He was the last Gaurd to win defensive player of the year I believe and he still dropped 20+ a night. He could go off for 25 any night while still playing the pg position the way it was meant to be played and getting his teammates involved.
Anyone who knows me on this site knows I talk all day long how the game grows and gets better. But some players like Jordan, Olajuwon, Malone, Hill, and Payton are the exception.
No real feedback is needed just wanted to give props to the one of the greatest players to have ever played this game regardless of where people rank him.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantAbsolutely great player. I would prob rank him as the 4th best PG I have ever seen play behind Magic, Isiah and Stockton but he was the best defensive point guard of the bunch (arguably the best all time since I didn’t see Walt Frazier play) and his offensive game was well rounded too.
Don’t know about putting Hill in the same breath as Olajuwon, Malone, and Payton though. Even when he was healthy Hill was never the player Pippin, Drexler, Kevin Garnett, Lebron James, D Wade have been (only comparing him to other do-everything superstars since the 90s).

richgatesParticipantI’ve always had a lot of respect for Payton. I hated when he played the Jazz because he was a lock down defender, and was good at getting in people’s heads. Plus he seemed to always kill the Jazz offensively. He was a fantastic player and he always played with a lot of heart. The sign of a good opposing player is one that frustrates you the most. Jordan, Kobe and Payton all have that characteristic.

JNixonParticipantHe was the best defensive PG, but I don’t think he was nearly the best PG ever. But it’s your opinion I guess

OhCanada-ParticipantI made a post about that. I agree 100 percent Payton is the G.O.A.T. at PG I dnt care who tries to argue. If Payton was ever on L.A. or Boston or Chicago like come on. The guy is simply spectacular and the most underated player ever.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI don’t see it. And I’m sure many people who saw Ike, Magic and Stockton in their primes wouldn’t agree with you.
And he played on the Lakers for a year with Shaq, Kobe and Malone. His numbers went down sharply from the previous season, he did not win a championship and that Lakers team will go down as one of the biggest disappointments ever.
