The 3 superstar model of building a championship is toast.

Let’s remember that the Heat didn’t invent it – they merely saw what happened in Boston with Garnett, Pierce and Allen and upped the ante with arguably even more talent.

It’s clear that team identity, team cohesion and great coaching are all essential to winning a championship.

Basically, this is The End of Hype, where we take what is on paper an insuperable combination of (especially offensive) talent and place unreasonable expectations on it as far as championships and legacy.

The Hype — about LeBron, about The Heat – all gone in one shocking week. The bubble has burst. They are no better than the recent incarnations of The Celtics or The Pistons, and given the shocking 4-1 collapse, probably worse.

The people who have hyped the Heat so relentlessly the last few years – ESPN, the media, and bandwagoneer fans – have major egg on their face. They all bought into unreality.

The media especially have set up these young men to fail, and are probably setting up guys like Andrew Wiggins to fail as well. Nobody should stand for this hyperbolic nonsense anymore.

Seems to me like they lost to that model last year.

The had a 50% hit rate when it came to winning championships and made the finals all four seasons. I wouldn’t knock the ‘Big Three’ model too much.

Similar flameout to the 2004 Lakers with Shaq, Kobe, Mailman, and the Glove.

10 years later another 4-1 butt kicking.

Those Lakers were over the hill.  This Heat team is over the hill too.

By the end, it was just LeBron and a bunch of guys vs. a team that resembled the ’86 Celtics and the Dream Team.  D Wade fell off a cliff.  Bosh was so used to being the third guy that he couldnt step it up. By the end, the Heat were two short of a Big Three.

if I get negged down to -1000 points, this is the stupidest thing anybody has ever put on the internet.  Let me go through it piece by piece and tell you why you suck.

"The bubble has burst. They are no better than the recent incarnations of The Celtics or The Pistons, and given the shocking 4-1 collapse, probably worse."

They’re not better than the Celtics and the Pistons?  Two titles is always greater than one, no?  And what 4-1 collapse are you talking about? There’s not even anything coherent there.

The people who have hyped the Heat so relentlessly the last few years – ESPN, the media, and bandwagoneer fans – have major egg on their face. They all bought into unreality."

Anybody who bought in at the beginning got to celebrate four NBA Finals appearances and two NBA championships.  Bandwagon fans suck, but they were better off than any fan of the Spurs, Thunder or Pacers over the past four years.

"The media especially have set up these young men to fail, and are probably setting up guys like Andrew Wiggins to fail as well. Nobody should stand for this hyperbolic nonsense anymore."

How can you set up a two-time champion to fail?  They’ve have more titles than literally anybody else over the past four years.  Greater than any Mavs player with one ring, greater than any Spurs player with one ring in the last four years.  Four years is the only barometer to measure this Heat team against, and they pass with flying colors.

Sorry but as long as there is social media and extensive sports coverage, there will always be hyped up players and teams. Whether it’s deserved or not. The heat went 2-2 in the finals. Respectable, The spurs were the better team and I don’t think it can be a collapse if they never held a series lead. Honestly it sounds like your gloating because they lost, hey the game of basketball is more than star power and yeah the heat had star power but the spurs won the series. I think Lebron and company would still take the two titles they have, they shouldn’t feel ashamed for coming together and being contenders for 4 seasons.

As much history as the Spurs have and how much we are loving them right now, let’s not forget they are 50% on Finals series wins  in the same time period

You’re overreacting man… Making the NBA Finals four straight years let alone winning back to back championships is no easy feat and obviously them coming together was a success. People get so caught up on that not four not five not six shit. They’ll still be remembered as a great team.

Lets look at this another way, since the only thing you’re concerned with is the two championships they won. Last year, through the good grace of Jesus (Shuttlesworth) they pulled out the win. This year, they showed that they didn’t deserve to win it even last year. Not only did they lose, they were absolutely outmatched. Do you want to look at the tape, or should we keep pointing to the fact that even the Spurs bench was maintaining 20 point leads.

Maybe you should look at the tape, and more specifically the movement away from the ball. The Spurs looked like a well oiled machine, and in contrast, the Heat showed just how well playing isolation with 3 shooters on the court works. It’ll pay off for awhile, but the better teams and coaches will figure it out. You just can’t rely on talent like Lebron to win a championship. Look how that turned out in Cleveland and again this year.

This is more about how GOOD the Spurs are.

We don’t have to make everything about Miami

They didn’t, they actually have their own 3 superstars. They don’t get the same amount of hype of other players, but Duncan, Ginobili and Parker are 3 legit superstars, period. Manu right now is a lot better than a fairly washed up Dwyane Wade. Parker is one of the best point guards in the league. Duncan is simply Duncan. Of course LeBron is the best player in the world, but the Spurs have 3 legit superstars.

The thing is, they also have a terrific supporting cast and those 3 superstars combined salaries cost them $30 million, so they have plenty of cap room to build a team around them instead of having to desperately search for old veterans chasing a ring.

I don’t think it kills the concept, it just reintroduces another path.

It also reminds folks that a key to success with multiple big stars is them working as a team.  When one guy is playing AAU ball it diminishes the value of the rest.  If that’s the style you want to play then you need to account for it when building the team.
