McDunkinUntil Monday evening, the Champion Baptist College Tigers were a basketball team so far off of anyone’s radar that they were buried in an avalanche of obscurity.
A private, Baptist school with a total full-time undergraduate enrollment of 250 students, the Tigers are an independent program that competes in the Association of Christian College Athletics.
As members of the ACCA, they’ve won three national championships, in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
On Monday night, their unfortunate rise to Internet stardom came at the hands of the Southern University Jaguars — a Division I team that competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
That’s because Southern beat Champion Baptist, 116-12.

No, that’s not a typo.In fact, it was so bad that the Tigers set an NCAA record for the most points allowed before scoring.
@JaguarHoops sets NCAA record for lead before opponent’s first basket, led Champion Baptist 44-0 before free throw at 5:10 mark.

Argue all you want about Southern continuing to pile on the points when it was so blatantly obvious that the game would be an embarrassing blowout, but the real question is why these teams would agree to play each other in the first place. The Tigers have played exactly four NCAA Division I schools this season, but Monday night was by far the team’s worst loss.
In the four games they’ve played, Champion Baptist averaged 38.0 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score an average of 108.3 points per game.
What does Southern receive by beating up on an independent team? Certainly not any RPI boost.
And for Champion Baptist: Was the humiliating blowout worth the school’s 15 minutes of fame?
Probably not.

ProudGrandpaParticipantI feel like me and 4 clones of me could go out and shoot 28-footers and make one before we gave up 44 points.

McDunkinYou couldn’t score that many points on a Chuck. E. Cheese mini hoops basketball game in 40 minute
Champion Baptist’s enrollment is 250 and the school president also coaches bball. They’re not in the NCAA (they’re in the Association of Christian College Athletics). How is it legal for Southern to even schedule this as a regular season game?
But oh well. good thing i took the tigers +105…pay up mikeyV

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantSt Katherine who played SDSU and Utah recently has less students and is in the NAIA(I believe) at least had scores in the 40s and 50s despite giving up 110+. I can understand the poor rebounding with no player taller than 6’3 but I can’t believe you couldn’t score more than 12 in 40 minutes. Perhaps it was just one of those weird things where even their shooters couldn’t get anything to fall. May have been more respectable if they had just fouled out all their players.

dcaseParticipantAs noted below…..they also shot 5 for 17 from the free throw line. In some ways not making shots from the field can be attributed to the opposing teams defense, but there is no excuse for only making 29% of your free throws. St Katherine put up 40-50 points against a good San Diego St team and an OK Utah squad. Southern was 3-9 entering last nights game. My main question is how does a D1 NCAA team go about getting Champion Baptist on their schedule (aside from an exhibition game)?

CynthiaParticipantI got to thinking to myself while reading this, how can someone only score 12 points, was their Field Goal Percentage like 5%? So I looked up the stats, not quite as low as 5% but…yeah…
Field Goals: 3-44 (6.8%)
Three Points: 1-11 (9.1%)
Free Throws: 5-17 (29.4%)
Rebounds: 22 (Southern had 69)
Assists: 1
Steals: 3
Blocks: 3
Turnovers: 27 (Southern had 20 steals)
Fouls: 200 - Posted on: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 2:22am #860011

ProudGrandpaParticipantYou may remember that Southern was the team that come oh so close to beating 1 seed Gonzaga as a 16 in last year’s tournament before falling behind in the final minute. And three of their four leading scorers are newcomers this year.

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantWell since I’m actually a senior at Southern University this year, let me explain, for us it was a practice game. Also it was only our 5th home game, we’ve been on the road most of the year playing bigger schools trying to get money for the athletic department. For Champion Baptist it was a money game. We were 3-9 coming into the game but 4 of those losses were to top 25 teams. (Marquette, Florida, #1 Arizona, & Baylor). It was a tune up game for SWAC. We won it last year, almost upset Gonzaga a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. This year it’ll be out of us and Texas Southern.
Being that we are a SWAC school, a HBCU we are rather small versus a school like say LSU who is 15 minutes away. So we try to help out smaller schools. We may actually play Champion Baptist again next year.
Nota Bene’ we also played Champion Baptist last year and beat them by about 50.
Our athletic Department and our school has been in shambles but 2013 has finally started the turn around. Considering the problems going on at our rival Grambling’s campus, we are providing a blueprint for other HBCU’s and small schools to help their academic and athletic programs. We have 4 Conference titles for 2013. We had the biggest freshman class in about 9 years. Graduation rate rose about 7% this year. We are once again prospering. And that is a good thing considering that we are the only HBCU system in the United States (meaning we have multiple campus’s, shreveport, New Orleans.)
