Memphis MadnessParticipantThe T Wolves just had one of those great random stat line nights with Corey Brewer going for 51 points and 6 steals with Gorgui Dieng also hauling in 20 boards. Dante Cunningham went for 20 and 13 with Ricky Rubio having 16 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds.
So, a 50 point night, a 20/10 game, a 15, 10, and 5 game along with a 20 rebound game. That doesn’t happen much.
They did this without Kevin Love, too.
It seems like Kevin Love wants out of Minny. The Lakers might be his favored destination.
With the Lakers sitting at a possible 6th pick in the draft, should the T Wolves trade Kevin Love and JJ Barea’s contract to the Lakers for Pau Gasol, 6th pick, the 36th pick, Xavier Henry, and cash?
I would think about it. At 6 they could go with Aaron Gordon as their new high flyer at power forward. He would be a good running mate for Ricky Rubio. Rubio, Gordon, Corey Brewer, and Dieng would also be good defensively.
With their own pick at 13 they could go with James Young to give them another young perimeter athlete who can shoot and score to go with Corey Brewer and Chase Budinger.
At 36 with the Lakers pick they can go get Jarnell Stokes (if he is there) to give them a solid inside scorer and another rebounder to make up for some of what Kevin Love gave them.
They would still have two more second round picks in which to work with.
The T Wolves may lose Kevin Love but they would gain some really good young players.
They could really get out and run too with a projected lineup of Ricky Rubio, James Young, Corey Brewer, Aaron Gordon, and Gorgui Dieng. I would resign Pek as an inside scoring and rebounding center (top shelf backup centers are a luxury). Pek and Jarnell Stokes would kill it inside to go along with the rest of the bench that would include Xavier Henry, Chase Budinger, Robbie Hummel, and Dante Cunningham. Pau Gasol could work with either lineup. He and Dieng would be great complementary bigs inside. Ricky and Pau have played together before so that should help. Or, you bring Pau off the bench to anchor the second unit.
The T Wolves can then use one of their remaining second round picks to go after point guard depth. Scottie Wilbekin and Aaron Craft are two options, along with a prototype combo guard like Russ Smith. Nick Johnson would give them another Arizona product who they could pair with Rubio in a small ball backcourt.
This trade would allow the T Wolves to get deeper and younger. The Timberwolves could run more, and they would still have some inside guys who can score and rebound.
Kevin Love might be a great PLAYER, but this trade could allow the T Wolves to become a better TEAM.

MopgrassParticipantI’m not sure I see either team doing this. Most teams are looking to acquire stars, not trade them. If Love is gone, who is Minnesota’s star?
It would be a problem for the Lakers because they put themselves in a situation… again… where they might have a one year rental player who walks away. A 1st rounder that high up in this year’s draft is a high cost for one season of play.
I’m pretty certain the Lakers would send Gasol and swap 1st rounders, but I’d bet the TWolves could do better than that somewhere else.

Magic JordanParticipantAs a Lakers fan I’ll say nope sorry. I’ll wait it out until the off season and hope to sign him outright. He doesn’t get us in the playoffs next year anyways. No need to hurry it an give up our pick as much as the wolves are probably hoping for it.
The writing was on the wall long ago but the wolves chose to think they could retain him. Good for them for having the confidence but that was never really an option I don’t think.

NickWayne87ParticipantTWolves having "Kevin" Deja Vu….
about this topic though…..the Lakers need to DRAFT…..they haven’t had a pick this high in god knows how long they’d be foolish to trade it away for a player they have a chance to sign outright anyway…

NYBALLASParticipantI made a post about this last week called the inevitable question but after making the post and looking at things I think the best realistic thing that Minny can do with love is send him to Boston for both their 1st round picks Gerald Wallace’s contract and whoever else u need to add in to make the $ work you guys are kinda right la can sign him outright in the offseason but Boston with Jeff Green and rondo in the week east is more appealing for a player than going to a completely rebuilding team with no piece’s in place as compared to Boston which has players and what seems like a decent coach with a great gm on a winning organization besides Boston would be better off getting him than 2 rookies to develop

Tim49461ParticipantAlthough I agree with everyone’s comment about just wait to sign him. You are forgetting Kobe’s comments. He said " i didnt sign the extension to be in the lottery again." Kobe might force the trade to happen. I can’t see Kobe sticking around next season without some help.
I agree though, they need to use this draft and hope for FAs.

Magic JordanParticipantWhat choice does Kobe have? He should realize that signing that extension all but guaranteed they won’t be in the playoffs next year. I am tired of him trying to hold the Lakers hostage. What is he going to do retire? He won’t pass up on that 50 mil and nobody will take on that salary so I have said this many times…. he made his bed, now he needs to sleep in it.
As a Lakers fan I am beyond grateful for what he has done for the franchise, he has been my favorite player for almost 20 years…. but enough is enough. I hope Mitch meant it when he said he wouldn’t make decisions based on Kobe. They already did him his favor by paying him an absurd amount of money. That’s where it should end.
Even though I am a die hard Lakers fan, the other half of the Lakers equation (The Kobe fans) will neg the hell out of me, but if he retired. That would be the best thing for the franchise.

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf I were the Lakers I wouldn’t do it either. A number 6 pick in this draft could be GOLD.
If I were Minny I would do it. If Kevin Love can’t get them in the playoffs this year, then how will they be better next season?
At least make Ricky Rubio "the guy", use a two center tandem of Dieng/Pek, and RUN with Aaaron Gordon, Corey Brewer, James Young, and Chase Budinger. Turn them into the new Phoenix Suns.
The Suns would have Pau Gasol as a third seven footer on the roster that can play. He can mentor the young guys, score in the post, then becomes a BIG expiring contract after next season.
Good trade for Minny, just think that the Lakers MIGHT want to roll the dice on Kevin Love being there in 2015. BUT if they can lock down Kevin Love, get him to re-up then they have a shot at LeBron in 2015.

Magic JordanParticipantThe thing is Kevin Love has no incentive to sign an extension with any team, traded to or not. He can get more years/money if he doesn’t sign an extension thanks to the new CBA. This takes away all the leverage the Wolves have and dumps it all onto Kevin Love. By simply saying he won’t sign an extension anywhere it will scare away a lot of teams, and I don’t think the Lakers can roll the dice twice and potentially lose two guys to free agency to better situations.
They need to focus on putting an attractive team together (with a potential all star on a rookie scale I.E their pick this year) and then hope to get a free agent on board that way. Trading for K Love before or during the season is too risky, especially seeing how whatever they would have to give up for him will make it impossible for them to make the playoffs. And they will have no players in place to make him want to stay… I.E Dwight Howard.

HitsterParticipantKevin Love if he did move as a FA from the T-Wolves would leave a lot of money on the table in 2015 as he could only take a 4 year deal with 4.5% increases as against a 5 year deal with 7.5% increases if he remained in situ. So if he was thinking about moving on next summer then it would be mutually beneficial for him and the T-Wolves to trade him to a team he was likely to extend with or he would have to agree to opt in for 2015-16.
The T-Wolves are under no pressure yet to trade K-Love and the ball is still in their court as they look to move forward. The team are on course for their first winning season in 9 years but with their talented roster they are still a few wins behind where a lot of us think they should be as they have had K-Love and Rubio in tandem all season.
