Can this guy be a starting C? He’s probably only about 6’9 in socks, but so is Dwight, Horford, Okafor, Perkins ect. He seems to be pretty strong, but probably needs more weight. His game is pretty unpolished but he’s so athletic and is a great shot blocker and a good rebounder. Do you guys see him as a 4 or a 5? 20-24 minutes off the bench or 34+ minute starter?

he should be a starter next year if they can’t get anyone in free agency.

I agree. Ibaka brings a lot more to the table than Krstic does. Krstic is a soft 7 footer who can hit mid range jumpers where Ibaka is an athletic freak, having a 46-48 vertical, and brings down rebounds as well as blocking shots. 5 blocks today, even though it seemed like he had more than that. Heck, he should be starting in the playoffs imo if Krstic isn’t back

I think that he can definitely be a starter next year. Hes so athletic and quick defensively blocking and challenging shots both on ball and help defense. He is decently strong right now but can get even stronger considering his frame, work ethic, and age(20). offensively he gets alot of put backs with his hops and aggresiveness and he has a solid jumper. a problem with his shot though is that he often doesnt take that mid range jumper. it is a matter of understanding and feeling comfortable with his role. he has nice touch around the rim to develop a low post game. hes going to be a good enough offensively and good to great defensively.

I think Ibaka has what it takes to be a very good player in the league.. He’s scary on the defensive end because he’s so athletic.. Poor Man’s Dwight Howard

At 6’10”-6’11”, Ibaka is listed as a F/C in the Thunder books they give out at the games. I could definately see him playing more minutes and even starting next year. He is extremely athletic and a defensive stopper and shot blocker/changer as well as a rebounding fool. I wish he was at least 2-3 inches taller so there would be no reason not to start him. His offense has grown all year and he has a consistant mid-range jumper and he can hit the 3 averaging .500 from beyond the arch (despite the fact that he has only taken 2 attempts lol). If he can develope some back-to the-basket and face-up go to moves, than Serge could be a Dwight Howard-like (very poor man’s of course) C for the Thunder for years since he is only 20 years old.

Ibaka true position is power forward. In Spain, he worked on his jumpshot and drive and even if he could play minutes at the center spot, it would not be fair toward him as he could develop as a star at the power forward spot while he would have to deal with bigger players at the center spot.

he just needs to add 30 more pounds… Lets be real… Howard doesnt posses any offensive game… he has 40 inch vertical, and can run the court… ibaka has higher vert then him,and ibaka can shoot midrange jumpers… i see definitly young howard in him….

You really need help if you are going to compare Serge Ibaka to Dwight Howard. I can’t help you, but hopefully someone else can.

Not at basketball. Maybe at other things in life, but not basketball. Shawn Kemp was a superstar. Serge Ibaka is a big body.

Guy plays with a lot of energy, and he is only scratching the surface of his true skills, I think in a season or two he will make this Thunder team even scarier.

46 or 48 inch vertical?? Is there any proof of this?? That number is hard for me to believe. Also, I think he is more of a PF than a C. If he could play beside a guy that is a legit 7′ he could be really good. He has a nice mid range jumper and good timing on the ball for blocks and rebounds. If he starts beside Jeff Green next year, they need to get out and run more than they do now.

Ibaka can get up, but let’s not get out of hand here. A 46-48 inch vertical would put his chest above the rim. His chest, ladies and gentlemen.

I think it was Jordan Farmar with a 42-inch vert. You can browse through combine results of years’ past here:

I was wrong. Some guy named Kenny Gregory recorded a 45.5 inch vert back in 2001; Jamario Moon was right behind him with a 43-inch vert. Insane.

I mean being able to jump high is nice and all, but to me it’s not really relevant if the player has no feel for the game. I am not saying I don’t care for athleticism because I do, but I think it is over emphasized more often than not. Many guys in mid-major basketball have proven they can play and have had successful NBA careers because they know how to play the game correctly. Big Guys from small schools don’t succeed in the NBA because no one ever taught them the game because all there life they got by on there athletic gifts.

I agree. Look no further than that Kenny Gregory guy for a prime example of athleticism without skill. He’s 6’5 with shoes on, 45-inch vert and a 6’11 wingspan, but he wasn’t even warranted a late second-round pick.

Guys have such bad fundamentals nowadays that when you come across a guy who has a high basketball IQ and good fundamentals you know he’ll do well in the NBA. When I say do well I mean a long career. Add athleticism with that then the player can be a perennial all-star as well. Guys today are more concerned with the oohhs and ahhs rather than just getting the job done. 2 points is 2 points no matter how you do it, same for a 3 pointer. You need athleticism in order to succeed in the NBA, but the more you have doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have a good feel for the game of basketball.

Athletic wings in the NBA are a dime-a-dozen. If one of said wings could add a pull-up 15 footer to their game, it could really help them in maintaining a roster spot; they could even become all-stars. But when was the last time you saw a super-athletic wing player with a nice mid-range game?

None come to mind, though Melo has a nice mid-range shot. I don’t know why a guy in the college game thinks about something like this and works on it. His college coach would love it, and it will make him more ready for the NBA.

Super athletic wings with a mid range game: D. Wade, Monta Ellis, Rudy Gay, Jason Richardson, just to name a few.. I think most successful NBA wing players have decent to excellent mid range jumshots… If your a wing an you cant shoot a 15 footer your probaly a fringe player…
