SLAM: You came out on the winning end of that “Will the Heat win 72 games?” discussion. How’d you know it’d be so tough for them to win so many games?

SP: I just felt it was an insult to every team that’s played in this League to think that one team can be put together, and now all of a sudden we got—excuse my word—a jackass like Jeff Van Gundy saying they can win 72 games and break the Bulls’ record. Who is he? So that was just something that he totally took out of proportion, to some degree—with respect to those two players, or I would say two and a half players, since I don’t think Chris Bosh is half the player of LeBron James. But there’s no way those guys are gonna break any type of record. I don’t think they can break the franchise record in Miami, or the state of Florida, I should say.

Not to say he had a point, or didn’t have a point. But doesn’t it seem like a lot of old players are starting to come out of the woodwork having opinions about active players affairs? IE: (Charles, Jordan, Karl, now Scottie) Everyone is allowed to have an opinion I must agree. But no matter how right or wrong they are, its kind of none of their buisness. I’m just saying…

Oh yeah, and he’s right about the Jeff talking about the 72 games thing. Not to say its impossible, or possible but I’m pretty sure the league wayyyyyy tougher now and 72 games is a stretch.

Ya the hating on chris bosh confuses me to be honest.  I’m from TO and watched every game bosh played for 6+ years, and he is a very good player.  Is he in Brons league? no, but few players are.  he’s definately near the top of the 2nd tier of stars though.  If he was first option in NY like amare, he’d be putting up 24 and 11 i have no doubt, and he’s doing pretty well as 3rd option in Miami i think… granted i think he’s a d-bag for his last stretch in TO where we were in the playoffs and he sat out the last 7 games of the season like a biatch when he definately could have played and kept us in contention.

I understand the frustration of the older players coming out and voicing their opinions about the new generation of players. Karl, Mike, Scottie, Charles, and many other guys were not given anything. They worked their butts off to earn respect. Now with the evolution of the media and sportcenter alot of guys are hyped up and spoiled. The new generation outside a few players doesnt respect the game. Take Lebron for example, he know the fans want to see in the Dunk contest whether he wins or not and he still refuses. Jordan did it for the fans and to prove he was the best dunker, but Lebron thinks its all about him and has an excuse every year. Oh yeah Jeff Van Grundy seem like he doesnt know very much about basketball. I know he was a coach but that doesnt make him a great commentator or analyst. Jordan was a great player and a a terrible scout/gm so there you have it.

Yeah, where is all the hate for Bosh coming from?  He’s easily a 24-11 if he was the main guy.  We all know he isn’t on Wade or LeBron’s level, but then again… Who is?  I think since he’s the easiest one to take shots at, people will unfairly do it.  The only way Bosh can get rid of all these unfair shots is to get tough this off season.  Get strong, get big, and get physical.  Take the Pau Gasol approach.  Although Pau Gasol isn’t the toughest player in the league, he sure has taken great strides to lose the "soft" label.  That’s Chris Bosh’s next goal.. or at least, it better be.

What’s funny, is that I don’t think Chris Bosh is particularly soft. He is a face up PF for sure, but he goes hard after rebounds and doesn’t really shy away from contact. He shouldn’t try to make himself a strictly low-post player, because that’s not his game. I could be wrong on this, but I feel like I heard that he put on a decent amount of weight and then decided to lose it again, because he felt like it hurt his quickness.

The hating on bosh is coming from the fact that he is the weakest link. Even when he had his own team, yeah he put up big numbers but they still were a mediocre team at best. Lebron and Wade both have shown that even with lesser talent they could still play with most people on any given night. Plus during the whole free agency Bosh was just the third wheel, he was hoping and praying that he could team up with Wade or Lebron I dont think either of them need Bosh as much as he need them. Wade and James are superstars, Bosh is an all-star masquerading as a superstar.

I love Scottie Pippen; I thought he was the best small forward ever until Mr. James laced up his Nikes. But I totally disagree with him; this Miami team has 2 top 3 players and arguably a top 20 player. All Miami needs is to build chemistry and they will probably break it. This Miami team might actually be better than that bull team, Jordan to James is even, wade to Pippen is wade and bosh to Rodman is equal. And if your scratching your head of why bosh and Rodman is equal, Rodman was the best rebounder in the NBA and was probably the best post defender at the moment, didn’t give you much on offense but made up for it at the other end of the court.

I disagree. Jordan to James is not even. James may be a better all-round player than Mike. Mike was a better shooter, much better defender, more clutch, better scorer, and a more polished arsenal of moves and go to moves. This Miami is not better than that Bulls team. Number one reason defense. Scottie, Mike, and Rodman were more than likely the best defenders in the league at their positions and top 7 overall. You would be hard pressured to find five more defenders better than them at that time. The bulls also had shooting in Kerr and Kukoc who was versitale and could stick the j as well. And Ron Harper was a very solid defender.

if they can have a relatively injury free season they’re gonna break it.  If it weren’t for the adjustment period (they didn’t get to play together in the preseason) and the injuries they’d still be in the hunt for 72 wins this season.  Don’t look now but San Antonio is 45-9. The door for them is sitll slightly cracked lol
