JM40ParticipantSitting here watching the Spurs/Heat game, and noticed that San Antonio only has one lottery pick on their roster, that being Tim Duncan who went #1 overall. I can’t think of another team that has done so much with low draft picks, especially second round picks. Let’s look at their current roster;
Tony Parker-1st round, pick 28
Manu Ginoboli-2nd round, pick 57
Danny Green-2nd round, pick 46
Boris Diaw-1st round, pick 21
Kawhi Leonard-1st round, pick 15
Patty Mills-2nd round, pick 55
Tiago Splitter-1st round, pick 28
Matt Bonner-2nd round, pick 45
Marco Belinelli-1st round, pick 18
Cory Joseph-1st round, pick 29
Aron Baynes-Undrafted
Jeff Ayers-2nd round, pick 31
Austin Daye-1st round, pick 15
Damion James-1st round, pick 24
Does this mean that this team is really overachieving, or does it mean that your draft stock doesn’t necessarily translate to wins/championships????
Any thoughts???

llperezi wouldnt look too much into it. They just really hit some home runs, especially drafting 2 hall of fame caliber guys in manu and parker so late in the draft and then kawhii with a trade recently becoming better then anyone could imagine. But recent title teams like lakers, celtics, mavs, heat etc… were built around guys drafted high. Spurs just have done a tremendous job building a great deep team.

ph90702Parker and Ginobili aren’t hall of famers. The hall of fame is for individual greatness. They’re not at a Kobe, LeBron level.

McDunkinIf you don’t think Parker and Manus NBA/International success won’t get them in the basketball hall of fame you’re crazy

King CaluchaParticipantThe hall of fame is for basketball overall, not just the NBA. Both guys have contributed to the promotion of basketball in Europe and Southamerica, they deserve a spot. Also, they do have NBA rings (probably one more today).

DondiJohnParticipantObviously you only watch High profile names in the NBA. BTW, the hall of fame is not only for NBA. FIBA and Olympics are also counted.

Hector_Reyes_8ParticipantJust… Wow. This is one of the stupidest posts ever. Go to BleacherReport, please.
Ginobili Iis a HOFer, he has won championships in the US and dominated overseas. He isone of the greatest foreign players to ever play in the NBA. The HOF isn’t just predicated around the NBA, basketball is played elsewhere. He has had an impact in foreign countries. I don’t know about Parker yet, but Ginobili is a basketball Hall of Fame player. This is coming from a Lakers diehard.

ph90702Dennis Rodman is arguably the best rebounder of all time. He dominated in that category for a long time.

For_Never_EverParticipantStupid. Ginoblii was a top 5 SG for at least 7 or 8 years straight. If he was on another team he would have been a franchise player. Parker has been a top 5 PG for majority of his carreer also.

ph90702So what if somebody is a top five point or shooting guard? So, by yoour logic, almost 20% of basketball players are hall of fame worthy? That’s ridiculous.

kmp07sParticipantIf they are at that level for a long time and win multiple championships…then absolutely yes.
The NBA hall of fame is not the MLB hall of fame. Its not nearly as strict. Both those guys are without doubt HOF players.

DondiJohnParticipantGinobili is one of two players to win Euroleague title, NBA title and Olympic gold medal.
other one is Bill Bradley

ConezdParticipantDefinitely can’t overlook coaching. Also, there may only be one lottery pick on the team but If you only have one lottery player to build around, Tim Duncan is about as good as it gets.

Jester87ParticipantYep but it all started out of 2 first overall picks, David Robinson and Tim Duncan. They built their first championship team and created their culture around those two. They were also a bit lucky to get Ginobili in the second round when international scouting was basically non existent. They would’ve never expected him to be this good, they weren’t even so sold on signing him to begin with. It’s not that different for Parker. The fact that those 3 are the kind of guys willing to accept relatively smaller contracts just to play together and to make their team better has made everything easier. Of course they did a terrific job with their draft picks, not only recognizing talent but most of all being able to develop players like no other teams in the league. They made very few mistakes on free agency and trade too. But again, take Robinson and especially (Duncan) out of the equation and probably things wouldn’t ve been the same.

For_Never_EverParticipantParker and Manu are likely the two biggest late draft steals in NBA draft history. So drafting right does matter.

JM40ParticipantLet’s not forget about other Spurs players on earlier teams that were late picks and played key roles on championship caliber teams;
Malik Rose-2nd round, pick 44; was a key bench player in the post relieving Duncan.
Rasho Nesterovic-1st round, pick 17; was the starting center alongside Duncan for a few seasons.
DeJuan Blair-2nd round, pick 37; was a force as an undersized 5 next to Duncan.
George Hill-1st round, pick 26; was Parker’s primary backup before becoming starter in Indiana.
……..and, I saved the best for last……..
Bruce Bowen-Undrafted; great shooter and defensive marvel. Big piece to many of the rings!

Junior Greek BallerParticipantThe reason they are so successful is that they draft international players. Americans are so selfish, always looking to make themselves look good, play minimal defence and team work.
Lets look at their roster who were born overseas.
Parker, Manu, Bellini, Splitter, Mills, Joseph, Diaw, Baynes.
International players listen to their coach, pass the ball, play defence and play for the best of their team. Popp and the Spurs know this, that is why they go overseas.
