According to Woj from Yahoo, the deal is almost complete. No details on what it is yet, but I’ll die if Sacto gives up a 1st rounder for him.

No one gets the joke? Gay? as in Rudy GAY?

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Who is running the Kings?  Why haven’t they been fired yet?  I guess they were smart enough to draft McLemore..  more than I can say for the Cavs.

Chris Palmer and Mark Spears on twitter said that the Kings will use Derrick Willand and Rudy Gay in an interchangeable stretch forwards.

So the potential lineup could be Thomas, MacLemore, Williams, Gay, Cousins or Thomas, MacLemore, Gay, Williams, Cousins. Either way that’s going to create some mismatches but we’ll see.

Now that Thomas is starting and not coming off to give them a spark, who will step up and benefit from this trade?

Wished they could’ve kept Vasquez and got rid of Jimmer.

As a Kings fan, I’m once again excited about another trade. I’m really glad Salmons is gone, they were so low at the SF spot that they had to give him minutes. I’m not upset about Patterson at all because the Kings still have Carl Landry who still has yet to play this year due to an injury. I’ll miss Vasquez and Hayes but Hayes didn’t really have a role with their loaded frontcourt and Isaiah is better than Vasquez anyway and it was worth losing those duplicates for a guy like Rudy Gay with more experience. The only thing that worries me a little is that if they end up winning a lot more games now, they won’t make the playoffs and just get a lower lottery pick. All season long, I’ve been wanting them to get Marcus Smart (Assuming they won’t be in the Top 3 to get Wiggins or Parker).

I don’t like this at all for the Kings. While Gay puts up stats, they are hollow stats, and 19 ppg on about 19 shots per game has got to be one of the worst in the league. I also don’t like how they got rid of the only pure point on the team in Vasquez. He’s not the best, but at least the guy moved the ball. Having a starting line-up of IT, B-Mac, Gay, Cousins, and T-Will is just bad. Sure the athleticism is there, but all of those guys are scorers, and aren’t going to get each other involved.

Depressing, because I really felt like Cousins turned the corner this year. I hope the kings can turn things around

The Kings can’t get any worse. And Cousins needs help, either Isaiah or Ray McCallum will start at the point guard position. The offense is ran through primarily Cousins anyway, so the need for a pure point guard isn’t really there. The Kings decided that if they were going to be bad, they would be bad with potential. It was a move for the future, I’m not too happy about gay, but glad that we may have two rooks in the starting line up and some athleticism that we haven’t had in awhile.

As a Raptor fan, I AM SO HAPPY THIS TRADE WENT THROUGH. I don’t how many people watch the Raptors game but it’s just DeRozan and Gay chucking up shots and Amir Johnson and JV aren’t getting any touches down low!!!!! It was extremely frustrated and the Raptors get really good players in return. They all add depth to the team and this allows up to tank even more and end up with a lottery pick.

Kings fan… I can guarantee you that you will be sick of Rudy Gay after the half way point of the season. I was once infatuated with his game but you realize they are empty stats and nothing more to his game than him playing hero ball.

I know all about Rudy gay and refusing to feed players down low. Let me ask you a question though, are any of those players Demarcus Cousins? Everybody on the court knows who the big man on campus is, and unless Gay wants to but heads with a 270 6’11" man, he’ll recognize when its time. If not, coach Malone won’t put up with it, we have other players to do what he does and he’ll end up benched. There is a draft full of small forwards on the way.

Don’t misunderstand, this is a chance for Gay like Derick Williams to redeem himself. If not, this is their last stop. This isn’t the Maloof era anymore.

The kings benefit from becoming versatile. They cant land a marquee free agent they cant bank on every pick paning out and lottery ball falling their way. Adding Derrick Williams and Rudy Gay will make them better by default their not going anywhere anytime soon they can eat the rudy gay contract.
Their not making the playoffs if they don’t get the number 1 pick and miss out on Wiggins it all good they will be back next year and they can add any of the other top picks in this draft like Jabari ,smart, randle, etc. Their in the position(NOW) where they don’t have to draft for need but for talent and make it work however it will. If they were to move or stay this team will be worth more then it is now if the moves they make the next couple of years pan out. Shaq signed up because of Demarcus his strength training regime as player alone not even moves will improve Demarcus. I think this was a good move for the kings not this season but far as direction wise and showing that “WE ARE ACTUALLY TRYING TO COMPETE this was great move win win for both teams.

       1. I doubt that the Kings play Rudy at the 4 much since they can play Thompson, Williams, and Outlaw there. I can see him at SF since they have 0 of those on the roster besides him. It would take BMac at the 3 and Thornton at the 2 to push Gay to PF for any actual playing time, I doubt we see that much this year.

      2. This trade only creates more time for Williams at PF, which is where he excelled at the end of last season.

     Pros:

-Either Thomas starts or Ray starts(I hope he gets some serious playing time now..guy is good)

-Vazquez the swinging door won’t be playing defense anymore(Now the defense won’t be AS bad)

-Maybe even more playing time for Mclemore(which is never a bad thing…guy has started to find himself in the nba)

-Opening up a lot of time for Derrick Williams(thought the trade was ok before but he has played his tail off so he deserves more playing time)

-Got rid of a lot of spare parts for someone who might can help Cousins and Thomas score

    -Didn’t Trade a 1st Rounder

-Still bad enough to get a good draft pick

-Front office is atleast trying to improve(although some may see this as the opposite by getting Rudy)

-Correct me if I’m wrong but he’ll be an expiring contract next year right? Might be a good trade chip(assuming I’m correct in that assumption)

    Cons:

-Got rid of Boogie’s good friend Patterson

-Acquired the albatross contract and chucking mentality that is Rudy Gay

-Didn’t even get some 2nd rounders for taking Gay’s contract

I like this trade more than I hate it and getting rid of a lot of those parts means salary has to go somewhere and with free agency not a likely scenario might as well as well roll the dice on someone since it has worked with Williams. I really hope they trade Thornton and his contract to a contender for expiring parts and go after Randle in the draft(my personal choice)

I really hope they trade Thornton and his contract to a contender for expiring parts and go after Randle in the draft(my personal choice)

Hopefully Williams will be able to take this in stride. However, bringing in an iso scorer really helps the Kings, Williams isn’t that guy and neither is McLemore.

Kings just got interesting, but still next to no chance they make the playoffs in the West.

The Kings probably aren’t really going to be much better with this trade, but they should be entertaining.  A line-up of IT-McLemore-Gay-D-Will-Cousins should be exciting, even if it can’t defend and is overloaded with scorers.

I have no idea what the Kings plan is.  They figure to have another lottery pick this year who they will surround and they are in a weird mode where they are collecting a lot of players who do not perform up to their talent level or up to expectations.  If I were their GM, I would have no clue what to do, because they have less to gain from getting a top rookie than most teams in the league due to their overload of semi-promising young players, but they are a long way from contention.  I am highly skeptical of their ability to build a contender around Demarcus Cousins, but they are committed to that now, despite not having a roster that really complements Cousins skills well.

This is among the smartest decisions Raptors management has made since hiring Ujiri. Wasn’t a fan when we got Rudy and more then glad to see him go. Maybe the change of scenery will help him change his 11 for 37 ways but I doubt it.

Vasquez is a great back-up for Lowry and they could even play together when we need 2 playmakers on the floor thanks to his size. Patterson gives us a stretch four with marginally better defense then Novak and Hayes is a decent veteran guy. Salmons will keep the bench nice and warm.

All in all, i like this trade for the Raptors going forward. 2014 draft, here we come!

I still think they need a distributor at the PG spot.  Thomas is a very good 6th man but he’s not an elite passer.

I think there is a common misconception with players in the NBA and their ability to pass the ball effectively.

Most people think that excelling at passing the ball translates directly into averaging 8+ assists per game; this is not always the truth. A rebound depends on working hard (or getting lucky) to put yourself in a position to grab a missed shot, this stat depends almost solely on a single individual, but a stat such as an assist depends on your teammates ability to make the potential shot you have given them. Luckily the NBA has become awesome and given us information from their player tracking data this season. A Statistic that I feel exemplifies passing ability in a way that helps bypass the reliance on teammates FG% is “assist opportunities per game”, this is any pass to a teammate that the teammate shot and if made would be an assist. If you adjust this stat for Isaiah Thomas’s mpg increase (from about 27.6 mpg to 35 mpg, about the average for most starting PG’s) you see that the number of assist opportunities he gets per game is among the top ten in the NBA (right at the level of Jrue Holiday).

Passing is an area of his game that has grown with him as he has come into his own in the NBA, most people do not see it because they focus more on his height or his scoring and do not look at anything but APG.

I agree with most of your post, and Isaiah does have a pretty good assist opportunities number.  But 35 minutes is definitely not average for starting PGs.  There’s only 35 players in the NBA (at any position) that play 35 minutes per game.  9 of them are PGs.  If you extrapolate his numbers to about 32 minutes or so (which I think is more realistic), he’s somewhere around 15-20 in the league, which is solid.

I should have phrased the 35 minute explanation better, the 35 mpg was taken from the average mpg of those PGs with high / similar Assist opportunity numbers and just off the top of my head.

Though with only Jimmer and Ray McCallum behind Thomas I feel he could see anywhere between 33 and 36 mpg soon. He is certainly playing well enough to warrant it.

Just looking at the salaries. Correct me if I am wrong ?

Gay makes $19mill next season, Acy just under $1m and Aaron Gray earns $2.5 for this season but is a free agent after that.

Chuck Hayes makes $6mill next season, Patterson $4m and Vasquez $3mill

So for next season Kings pay $20mill for their two players and Raps pay $13 mill for their 3 players.

Basically Raps saved $7mill. They are already $4mill under the cap for next season with team options for Dwight Buycks and Daye which could save them another $2mill. So from my guess Raps can spend $11-13mill on signing someone in the offseason ?

I think this was a good trade on both ends, but IMO Sacramento got the better deal. They still have their first round pick and his contract expires next season…

Cavs have Sacramento’s pick from the JJ Hickson for Omro Caspi trade. I believe it is top 10 and something like 15 and beyond protected.

This trade plus that fact the East is terrible right now could put the Kings in the 11-14 range and give Chris Grant another lottery pick to try to "Shock the World" and select someone no one thought would go that high.

I will defend this deal for the Kings:

They really had nothing to lose here. They already had too high a Cap figure for the next 2 seasons, so the "Gay has a big salary" argument is really irrelevant.

Now, in terms of Gay’s value as a player, no he doesn’t really make you any better. But the Kings aren’t exactly a playoff contender, and they aren’t even a nice young team. They are a discomboluated assortment of mostly bad players. They brought in Derrick Williams, no they add Gay. They create a new dynamic. I’m not saying it gets them any closer to the playoffs, or any better as a team. But seriously, why not? They gave up a pile of crap for him, if it isn’t ruining your team’s cap structure anyway.
