I don’t really like it for Chicago at all…Rudy doesn’t give them an upgrade over Ronnie Brewer or Kyle Korver…I’ve never been a Rudy Fernandez fan…Taj Gibson is a perfect big man off the bench gives you 6 and 5 off the bench with solid rebounding and defense

That’s a terrible deal for Portland.

You have like 5 solid big men ( Camby, Oden, Pryzbilla, Aldridge, Pendergraph). Why even add Gibson? If I was Portland, you should lean Fernandez to Utah IMO. I would do something like

Portland get Okur who’s a solid big man who can stretch defenses. Utah gets another wing to allow Hayward to develop at a nice pace and a big man back in Pryzbilla. If POR wanted to sweeten the pot, throw Dante Cunningham in as well.

I think it is a good deal for both teams but a bad deal for both players. Both players would excel on teams where they would have a more prominent role. To me Fernendez has enough cieling to be one step lower than an Allstar and a good player on a good team if given the role of third scorer. Gobson is a good hard worker and will get rebounds, blocks and score at an efficeint rating given minutes.

It creates a log jam at the 2 for the Bulls (unless someone plays out of position at the 3) and leaves them thin up front. I think the Boozer/Gibson tandem at the four is perfect for the Bulls. Gibson brings a lot of what Boozer does not.
Unless the Bulls go get someone else, this means that Asik has to pan out for the Bulls and Thomas is probably your backup 4 at this point – a guy who should make solid contributions, but isn’t exactly in his prime.
It creates somewhat of a log jam inside for the Blazers as well.
I think it would be a huge disservice to a guy like Gibson. He’d probably sit the bench with Portland more than he would with Chicago and his development would be slowed.

It works out for both.

The Blazers get something for nothing. Rudy Fernandez isn’t going to return to them. He’d sooner return to Spain where he’d make more money anyway. Getting a power forward would allow them to save face.

The Bulls get a two way wing. He shoots better than Brewer and defends better than Korver. With them picking up Boozer, Gibson will never see the floor that much again. If Thibodeau does not believe Gibson at 230 lbs. can play the center the way he needs his centers to play, then there just aren’t minutes. Selling him now at the age of 25 after a solid rookie year might be for the best. There are always power forwards available to give 10-15 minutes per game. They still would be able to sign Lou Amundson, get similar production, and not have to deal with a player being disappointed that his role has been reduced.

In reality, Portland really had to trade Fernandez. He was unhappy and threatening to leave them for Europe, so they made a smart move in getting something for him while they had a chance.

Chicago gets a really underrated player who can finish on the break, shoot, and is an alright defender. Plus, Chicago is primed for the playoffs, and whats better than bringing an experienced basketball player thats played in big games before. Gibson, for me, is just too raw and will get exposed in the playoffs.

I disagree. I think the Blazers should just keep him if your getting Taj Gibson.

To be honest, I don’t understand. Gibson is good but I think they have someone who can produce similar to him in Pendergraph. I think it’s just a dump of Rudy. Fernandez could be important to a playoff team from what I seen. He can shoot, he has some nice slashing ability and I believe he’s could be a team’s 6, 7th guy off the bench.

I would hold out with Rudy if I was Portland. I would look for more deals because I highly believe they could get more.

Portland loses him if they don’t deal him. Real Madrid put out an offer on him for $2.8 million if he walks away from his NBA deal. They either get something or nothing. The Real Madrid deal won’t be there forever, so they have to make up their mind soon. The reality is that either Taj Gibson or a mid-to-late first round pick is the best they can do.

To my knowledge Fernandez won’t have a choice, but to finish out his contract. Just like these guys in Europe that don’t have these automatic “out clauses” they can’t just leave if they get unhappy or want to go to the NBA. This is more of a thing of international regulations and rules that keeps this from happening. FIBA won’t allow it. With that said, Portland can and will get something back for him, but I think his value is distorted. Not only did he not play well when Roy went out, which I believe he had already checked out like Lebron did against Boston in the playoffs, but signing Matthews showed that they need him even less than before. Some teams are going to be frightened off by his complaining and constant talking to the media as well, whether it was justified or not. Any team that doesn’t think they will be able to play him enough minutes probably won’t go after him and a lot of other teams really don’t have any assets. There is also that thing for a lot of teams of matching up a contract with his, which is hard because Rudy doesn’t make much. The problem in dealing with Portland is that they seem to over value a lot of their guys as if they are worth a lot more than what they are, so who knows what will happen.

Awful deal for the Bulls, they lack frontcourt depth and by trading Gibson it does not help them, they still have a glaring need in their frontcourt, he is such a solid player to have, he hustles, rebounds, is aggressive and provides toughness down low, Rudy is a good player to have but does he really help the Bulls that much? They already have somewhat of a solid backcourt after this offseason, it just does not feel like they have anybody to backup Boozer at the PF position, not anybody as solid as Gibson anyway.

This works for the Bulls if they can sign Amundson to fill the void left by Gibson. Korver is tall enough to play at the 3 on occasion and Rudy has the talent to seize the starting spot from Brewer, even if the mindset is lacking in Portland because he knows he’ll never get it off Roy. If the Bulls can get Lou and Rudy they’ll have one of the deeper, better rosters in the League. Also, Amundson is almost an exact duplicate of Noah and could play the C spot easily enough.

In terms of Gibson, he provides Portland with a long-term replacement for Camby as defensive big man.

Roko Ukic was able to sign with Fenerbahçe Ülker by agreeing to give up the $2 million the Bucks still owed him. Portland sunk $3 million into getting Rudy Fernandez’s rights and paid him another $2 million in salary, they want to make sure to get a return on their investment. It does them no good to throw another $1 million at him when he doesn’t want to be there and then walk away with nothing to show for it. Pritchard did a good job of throwing around Paul Allen’s money buying picks, and the return on guys like Fernandez, Koponen, and Freeland have been nowhere near worth it. Two of them haven’t even been to training camp and the third is a sulking mess.

They have Kurt Thomas and Omer Asik while also being comfortably under the cap to fill out their remaining four roster spots to get a guy like Louis Amundson. Have your pick from Joe Smith, Josh Boone, Kwame Brown, Malik Allen, Brian Skinner, Sean May, Steve Novak, Brian Scalabrine, and Jonathan Bender. James Johnson probably would be better suited at the 4 given his lack of perimeter polish. They will probably bring their favorite practice player Chris Richard to camp. Trent Plaisted might end up with them in camp as well. Considering Carlos Boozer is a 34 or 35 minute guy, they aren’t going to have problems at that spot.

finding a decent swing man is dime a dozen. Finding a quality big man is a rarity in todays NBA. Bulls should not do this considering how much teams focus on having good depth in their front court now.

wutever, backup power forwards are easy to find. Taj Gibson plays hard and within himself, and those traits won him favor with the past coaching staff and got him on the floor. He is still very skinny and not particularly skilled. They can find another Taj Gibson. Considering the Bulls tried to throw $20 million at J.J. Redick, coming away with a better version of him for a third of the overall commitment would be an achievement.

If the Bulls were to get Rudy, they could at least trade a player that doesn’t give them much like James Johnson… I knew it from the start that DeJuan Blair should have been their 16th pick instead of this guy who was known for his poor work ethic… And even after one year of experience, he has yet to blossom as you can see in his performance in the D-League… Taj Gibson is an energy guy for Chicago… I don’t like seeing him getting traded for another guy who plays a different position… Taj provides defense especially with his tremendous length… Rudy for James Johnson is OK but Rudy for Taj is a no-no in my books…
