McDunkinIf you’re a basketball fan, you’ve probably already read Zach Lowe’s tiered NBA rankings. If you’re not, toward the bottom there’s an aside about a wonderfully wackadoo bit of proposed strategy that might turn you into a fan.
Owner Vivek Ranadivé has pitched the idea to the team’s brain trust of playing 4-on-5 defense and leaving one player to cherry-pick, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The Kings aren’t actually going to do that, but their D-League might, and it shows Ranadivé is committed to pushing boundaries in his search for an offbeat brand of “position-less” ball.
I don’t care that any halfway competent team would carve up a four-man zone, and probably beat these Kings by 80. (This defense would probably be effective against the Kings, who don’t have more than a couple players worth guarding anyway.) I don’t care that you’d probably have DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay get into a fistfight over who got to hang out under the opponent’s basket. All I care about is that Vivek Ranadivé is apparently crazy, yet still determined to give advice to his basketball people. That bodes well for the Kings’ entertainment value in the coming years.
This is the brilliant idea of a stoner or of an eight-year-old child who realized there’s no offsides rule in basketball, and decided there’s probably a way to exploit that. Vivek, here’s one for free: what if four teammates held hands in a circle around the guy dribbling the ball up the court, so no defenders could get to him? Boosh—I just revolutionized basketball.

ropeParticipantThey would get killed if they played 4 on 5, even if someone was on the other end. If this was a good idea, it would have been done a long time ago. If this cat is going to meddle like that, I feel for the staff and players of the team.

JoeWolf1The second he pitched that idea, in various parts of the US Thibs had mild stroke and D’Antioni got a half chub.

OllstarParticipantIt could change the game. Maybe teams start keeping a goal keeper back and its 4 – 4 offense and 1 goal tender.

username_takenParticipantI mean, if this worked, don’t you think somebody would have done it by now. You know, basketball’s been around a century.

BasketBalAllanParticipantThe problem with this is not that "it would have been done already" or that you would get killed on defense. It is that even if it worked, all the opposing coach would need to do to combat it is have a defender hang back as well. Essentially just playing man on man defense again.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThat college team that scores 11 trillion points a game uses a cherry picker BUT the coach has the kid launch 3 pointers.
What you do is cherry pick at the 3 point line, fire up a 3 and then dunk it back if you miss before the defenders get back.
Ok, this is Rudy Gay’s Dream Scenario obviously.

Memphis MadnessParticipantGive up a 2 to get a wide open 3. That actually makes sense. But wouldn’t you do that BEFORE you got rid of Jimmer?

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantOne it would push scores in the 120’s even if the the other team scores 140.
Second, what if coaches left a guy back also to stop the outlet pass and e get to see 4 on 4 offense. Talk about ide open spacing, 15 foot circumference of free space after P n R and no way to close out on corner shots.
Third, teams like Miami and the Love to Brewer connection already kind of tried this and when used against bad shooting teams it orks even better.
If you have a great outlet passer either on defensive rebounds and or in bounds plays a team can have sucess as long as it done right. Coaches will start having guys ppump the three and let the leaker fly by and drive and rekick though.
When guys close out on last second 3’s they already take off on a lot of teams. Hopefully teams put a effort into getting those guys the ball. 3 on 3 offensive is so much easier than 5 on 5.

doubledribblerParticipantIt is a horrible idea. You might be able to get away with something like this in the middle school level, but you are talking about professional athletes. 4 on 5 means either a wide open shot or one of these guys taking two steps and a dunk and once the shot goes up all you have to do is send the guy closest to half court back which is probably going to be a pg or other fast perimeter player.

ChewyParticipantIn college I refed YMCA basketball to make money. A freshman girls team did EXACTLY what you joked about!
The 4 girls joined hands and circled around the 5th girl as she brought up the ball. A girl from the other team charged into the circle and destroyed the whole formation. 4 girls went to the ground on that one play!
I called a personal foul on the defender and a moving screen on a girl on offense. Still the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in a basketball game (in person or Youtube).

Magic JordanParticipantWhaat! No way! A foul on the defender? What the heck did they do wrong? The call should have been just a moving screen on one or more players. Though I can see how you panicked and called a foul on the innocent defender as that scenario is pretty much unprecedented.

ChewyParticipanttook a ten yard head start and sprinted directly at the group. She had her hands crossed against her chest to protect herself.
Think about a Bull chasing after a red flag, that’s what she did. It was unsportsman like, it was malicious… it was hilarious!

ChewyParticipantthe "ring around the rosy" team made a lay up and all 5 girls ran to the sideline and started doing the worm.
The other team easily inbounded the ball, advanced it up the court and scored and uncontested lay up.
I had to warn the team that celebrations like that were unsportsman like and they cannot do them anymore or I would T them up.
I wish I was making this up…
I have never seen a team so happy to play a game where they were blown out, so maybe they were onto something.

CU.LIONSParticipantThis idea isn’t new. I see it everyday playing ball. Some lazy Dumbazz is always hanging and never gets back on defense, BUT still wants everyone else to D and rebound then throw him the ball so he could shoot almost all the shots.
Imagine the stat line the “Cherry picker” gets. he might average 50!!!!
Players will be fighting to be “that” player.

Goaltender AKA the guy that routinely gets Anthony Davis’s or Lebrons Nuts in his face off an alleyoop in transition..
This idea is up there with the greats like…Roy Hibbert letting Paul George borrow his Girfriend..

machu46ParticipantWould the cherry picker even be able to score? Couldn’t the other team just have someone get back once a shot goes up and have plenty of time to get there before the Kings can throw it up to the cherry picker?
