The Raptors have a 15.6 per cent chance of winning the first pick in Tuesday night’s NBA draft lottery. Count Bryan Colangelo’s chances of earning a contract extension many times higher.

The club’s president and general manager is closing in on a new multi-year deal to remain in charge of Toronto’s basketball operation, multiple NBA sources said Tuesday.

“It’s happening,” said one person with knowledge of the negotiations.

Sources say the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, the club’s majority owner, continues to make progress in its ongoing effort to sell its interest in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Raptors and Maple Leafs, among other interests.

With their eyes on an ever-more-probable exit, the pension plan’s representatives have appeared unwilling exert influence on a future that isn’t likely to include them. That’s been a boon to the Raptors’ GM, of course, since the pension plan’s Glen Silvestri has made a name as the chief anti-Colangelo voice on the board of directors.

Without Silvestri actively leading the opposition to Colangelo’s continuing presence in Toronto, the GM has no shortage of influential support.

Larry Tanenbaum, the chairman of the board and the minority owner, counts himself a believer in Colangelo’s ability to reverse the fortunes of the struggling club, which has missed the playoffs for three straight seasons. Richard Peddie, the CEO who also holds a seat on the board, has also voiced public support for Colangelo’s rebuilding plan.

Colangelo, who was en route to the New York area on Tuesday morning, has declined comment on his contract status in recent days.

As multiple league sources said this week, his is a “delicate” situation. And his isn’t the only one.

Jay Triano, the head coach, is staring down a June 15 deadline on the one-year club option on his contract. Most of Triano’s staff is also in limbo, as is Maurizio Gherardini, the vice president of basketball operations and resident guru of the international game, who is without a contract beyond next month.

If the Raptors and Colangelo can’t reach an agreement, the franchise has its backup plan.

As ESPN.com first reported, Wayne Embry, the 73-year-old advisor, would be the likely candidate to be named interim GM. In that event Embry, who has refused comment on the matter, would preside over Toronto’s first-round pick in the June draft.

Lets just use your thread to discuss this I dont wanna jump back and forth through two threads. Yes it is good news. Alot of people may hate it but really its been pointed out tons of times, who can we get that is that much better then BC? He’s our guy, just gotta accept that. I am pretty sure he saw the negative feedback towards hsi performance and that he wants to prove his worth. Maybe all those promises were just so he could get resigned.

    Just posted on yours.

But the main point of it was BC is one of the best GM’s at drafting, so this draft should be interesting to see what his move is. I’ve been a Colangelo supporter since Day 1 but there are things he can improve on. I’m glad he’s moving away from the Euro’s by wanting to build around DeRozan & Davis, this is a step in the right direction for us.

I really hope his attitude towards Triano changes in the near future I dont think he should be a head coach, I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Mike Brown or Lawrence Frank brought in to coach our team.

I for one am cool with this news. I do not think he has been all that bad, sure there have been moments, but overall have you looked at his particular moves and said, "Man, this is a bad move", without it being in hindsight (Turkoglu sucked, but everyone wanted him and he was in demand, not to mention traded immediately). He has done pretty well in the draft, and while losing Bosh was a hit, you could not help but know the Raps were in rebuilding mode. Bargnani was not an incredible first pick, but people were talking more about Tyrus Thomas and Adam Morrison as possible first picks at the time than Rudy Gay or Brandon Roy. LaMarcus Aldridge is better, but the team would still have issues even so.

Right now, they have some decent pieces to trade and he hopefully will shake things up whereas we will no longer have to worry about what to do with Calderon. To me, if the Raptors get an Irving, Kanter or Williams, they are in a great outlook on rebuilding. If they do not, trading Calderon and maybe even Bargnani to make this team even younger might lead to a year full of losses again, but it will be the best way to gather another significant talented young player. Getting as much young talent in Toronto as possible is honestly the best thing this team can do, and I think Colangelo will have his eyes on doing that.

BC first strategy looked as if it was going to work. Bringing in all of those experienced euros wasn’t popular but the raptors were successful . That short term success left the raptors in the dust for a couple seasons. Now they have a young base which looks like it’s only gonna get better. Demars work ethic will rub off on all of his teammates. The raptors look like they are on the right path and need a few more pieces to become a competitive team in the league. BC made small subtle moves which are making the team stronger.
    Good job resigning BC
Too bad this draft is trash the raptors really needed a good class
