I know we all thought he was crazy walking away from a player option worth $15 million considering his sub-par season, but the Spurs just took it a step further! $38.8 million over four years with a player option on the fourth year.

Do they see something in Jefferson that I don’t?

Wow what a head scratcher from a normally well run franchise. It’s almost as if they feel for Jefferson for his idiotic decision to turn down 15 mil. They basically just outbid themselves. I don’t even know any teams who would offer RJ the MLE let alone the near 10 mil a year the Spurs are offering. This isn’t the NFL with non guaranteed contracts. I truly hope for their sake that at least the last year has a team option.

That’s a lot to play for 12 point and 4 rebounds after he’s regressed, no less.

The Spurs are saving $5.5 million next season due to RJ opting out of the $15.2 million.

Paying RJ $9.7 per year isn’t that bad of a deal.

“He’s played well with his last contract. He played more efficiently than his numbers might have shown,” Buford said. “I think the option of coming into a new team with three established players, some playing injured during the season, was a difficult time for everybody.” – R.C. Buford

I expect things to go a lot better this upcoming season.

^^ It’s not really about the fact that they are saving money from him opting out. That was his decision, the fact is that no one was gonna offer him more than 5 mil a year, yet the Spurs offered more than 9 mil a year. Just doesn’t make sense. Do you really reward a guy that much for giving them a little more cap room for this summer which they didn’t use for anyone else? Whether he plays well or not next year the fact is that they paid way over market value. If you can buy a 16 oz Steak for $2.00/pounds why pay $5.00/pound. Now every single Spur that has an upcoming contract extension will expect to be compensated as well as Jefferson and that simply won’t be possible. Bad move on their part IMO. With Joe Johnson while they overpaid, teams like the Bulls and Knicks would have also given him the max just 5 years, so while it wasn’t a great signing for the Hawks they paid close to what other teams were willing.

San Antonio waited too long and didn’t add another player on the wing.

I agree, 38 is too much for Jefferson. Espcially if we just had Redick for 19 million and Brewer for 12 million

Not to mention, I think you could have gotten McGrady for 10-15 million

McGrady sucks Brewer is an offensive liability and Redick is not a versatile scorer. Jefferson is the best of the group.

Is Jefferson 20 million dollars better? I don’t think so. He SUCKED last season.

Ronnie Brewer is not a bad offensive player. He averaged 12 points in back to back seasons in Utah before this season. I would have given pieces of the MLE to McGrady ( 3 years/12 million) and Brewer ( 4 years/ 15 million)

I think that would have been better then 38 mil for Jefferson.

Seems like a deal was in place maybe to help out the Spurs out financially this year and in turn RJ gets a long term deal but the player option is terrible for the Spurs. This means they won’t rebuild for a while now with Ginobli and RJ both getting long term deals. I wonder if Parker will be moved sometime this year now, will the Spurs pay him big money esp. if George Hill improves. Also the following year Duncan is up and its seems unlikely he’s retiring and no way they let him walk.

I was really hoping they would do a sign and trade or let him walk and spend money elsewhere…. he really hurt them last year (watch nearly every game)….

his floor spacing is awful, he crowded lanes for ginobili and parker, sat in areas where a player could double duncan and then recover on the close out becauase jefferson was so hesitant with his shot… his defense was good, but not extraordinary like bowen or a risk taker like manu…

However, i think the FA market has gotten very thin on athletic wings, which the spurs are pretty desperate for. I HOPE that a year with parker and manu healthy the whole season he will finally master the read and react offense (much more difficult to learn for wings than for bigs). The spurs need him to be agressive and confident all season long if they are going to contend the way they should.

as far them giving him 38 million, i am very surprised, but my only way to rationalize it is that there are a bunch of teams out there with a lot of cap space left and no one to really spend it on, leaving jefferson with the opportunity go and make more money back in NJ or elswhere?

Genrally RC Buford knows more than all the other GM’s combined… so heres a spurs fan hoping there is a method to his madness
