After listening to bill simmons, it is weird only one person has lillard going. Kyrie hasn’t played in the post season in college or the NBA and isnt very battle tested/ experienced in pressure situations. Lillard showed he he can perform in pressure situations and it is pretty much a coin flip who is better. I would take Lillard over Kyrie because he has more experience for the 2014 Basketball world cup

I only think there are a handful of locks. The rest of the guys will be based on what the staff thinks they need. May the negs rain down on me, but I would not be surprised if Harden is cut. They need more D and offensively I don’t think he is as good of a fit with this setting or with this team. I also think the lineups will be pretty flexible. I expect the 3s to get decent time at the 4, especially if they only take one between Cousins and Drummond.

Assuming Rose looks anything remotely like he used to and in no particular order this is what I would do:

    Guards: Rose, Curry, Wall,Thompson, Beal

Forwards: Durant, George, Davis, Milsapp, Parsons

    Centers: Cousins, Drummond

The only pause I had was Irving vs Wall, but felt Wall was the best fit for everyone else on the roster. He gives you the big athletic guard that Westbrook usually is and if desired it will be easier to play Curry off of him. Parsons was my last guy in. Felt he was the best mix for what that they already had. Won’t be surprised if he doesn’t play, but gives them a good mix of athleticism and shooting.

The competition is serious at guard. Will Team USA go with one or two true centers? During the 2008 Olympics, 2010 World Championships and 2012 Olympics, Team USA only carried one true center.

Here are the picks I’m pretty sure about:

G: Derrick Rose – Reports are that he looked phenomenal today and despite getting winded, looked 100% healthy.

G: Kyrie Irving – His ball handling against pressure, penetration and quickness at guard is just too great to leave off of the team. Plus he’s Coach K’s guy.

G: Stephen Curry – Shooting, plus he does have experience having played in the 2010 World Championships. Can play off of the ball, which is a huge plus.

G/F: James Harden – I’m not a fan, but he’s an Olympian having won gold in 2012.

G/F: Klay Thompson – Size, shooting and underrated defense on the perimeter.

    F: Paul George – He’s a lock.

    F: Kevin Durant – He’s a lock.

    F/C: Anthony Davis – He’s a lock.

After those eight, it gets harder. What’s easy though is DeMar Derozan and Kenneth Faried being cut. I don’t think they are great fits in FIBA. I also see Kyle Korver being cut due to his lack of defense/versatility. I also see John Wall being cut. Competition at guard is fierce and I just feel Wall’s lack of shooting puts him behind the other guards despite his size and athleticism.

    Here are my remaining picks:

G: Damian Lillard – I went with Lillard over Bradley Beal. Beal is a great shooter, but Lillard shoots it well, plus is a better ball handler. Lillard’s quickness off of the dribble and ability to get into the lane is a must in FIBA.

F: Chandler Parsons – I went with Parsons over Gordon Hayward. Just feel like Parsons is more versatile being able to play both forward positions and provide shooting.

F: Paul Millsap – With the withdrawal of Kevin Love, I feel Millsap is the next best stretch four. He’s a veteran guy who’s tough and does everything well.

C: Andre Drummond – Team USA has only carried one center, so I think they stick with that formula. I went with Drummond over DeMarcus Cousins because I feel he fits the mold of a Dwight Howard or Tyson Chandler, which are the two centers Team USA has had in the past.

    Final Roster:

G: Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard

G/F: James Harden and Klay Thompson

F: Kevin Durant, Paul George, Chandler Parsons and Paul Millsap

    F/C: Anthony Davis

    C: Andre Drummond

I dont mean to use bill simmons podcast as a justification for everything I say, but it was a really good one with he and zach lowe about the basketball world cup.

Suppose Anthony Davis gets in foul trouble or gets hurt in a close game in the fourth quarter against Spain in the Final. I know it could be other teams but spain is the biggest threat to us winning it. Who would you want to take his place place. I would take Cousins because he has more experience in the NBA, is a solid defender(he averaged just as many combined steals and blocks as Drummond), is a solid jump shooter and shoots 70% from the line. Dummond is a better defender and rebounder but they could just foul drummond every possession and send a 40% FT shooter to the line who is inexperienced. That would be a disaster waiting to happen. I think it would be a close call and they could possibly wind up taking both of them. If it came down to one or the other I am taking cousins and not regretting it. Other than that everyone else look like good picks to be on the team.

Team USA very well could go with DeMarcus Cousins over Andre Drummond. It’s tough. Reports are that Drummond didn’t really play well day one of camp, while Cousins did.

As long as Cousins can keep his emotions in check and play the role Team USA needs, I think he’d be a great choice.

Anybody else think that Jabari Parker should get a look?

He has a game that looks like it should be a great fit for FIBA, especially as a stretch four.

Yea it’s just not his time. I think I would’ve invited him though but I get why he wasn’t. Too many proven guys who really play the same position(3/4). He is similar to Melo though(who is probably my favorite player in international ball as he scores in so many ways and so effortlessly) and will most likely score a good amount of points for team USA in the future.

Guards- Curry, Irving, Wall, Rose,  Harden, Thomspon

Forward- Durant, George, Davis, Parsons, Millsap

    Center- Drummond

There are 4 PGs, 2 SGs, 3 SFs, 2PF and a C. There will be a lot of 3 guard lineups. Probably a lot of Curry, Rose, Harden, Durant and Davis. Depending on matchups you could have 3 "PGs" out there but in international ball they won’t be play PG full time. They could’ve used another PF/C option like Davis. I would probably put Lamarcus Aldridge over Parsons but I don’t think is Alsridge is in camp.

i honestly only expect Anthony Davis to make it as a big man. maybe paul milsap as well. but im expecting a ton of NBA small forwards to be used as stretch 4’s in the this tournament. my current projection would be:

    Guards: Rose, Curry, Wall, Irving

Derrick Rose is the vet here already with this unit and would be my leading candidate to be the starting PG on the opening tip of the first game. Kyrie Irving has three things going for him in making this team, his connections to coach K, his outside shot, and his ball handling and capabilities to create in tight spaces. this wont be the NBA and the spaces would be tighter on the court, so his strength would actually apply more here in FIBA. John Wall i have making the team due to his defense and elite speed and athletiscm in the open court. coach K utilized Wade and Westbrook the same way and expect that role to go to John. Steph Curry makes as the teams best shooter. at the end of the day, you take the best shooter at camp iregardless of position.

Wings: Harden, Thompson, Durant, George, Parsons, Hayward

Kevin Durant needs no explanation why he’ll make the team. all he has to do is say that he wants to be in it and he will be. He’s the leader of the whole team and will be looked at as the go to guy amongst a team filled with them. his length and size will also lead him to play a bunch of stretch four duties, in fact i expect him to start as one. James Harden will be looked at as the secondary option at offense and be like the Kyrie of the starting unit. he’ll create off the dribble for himself and others and his ball handling would come into play during tight presure. Paul George is my starting small forward. i think he will flourish even more taking over Kobe’s role of defending the best player of the opposing teams as well as hitting shots outside shots and ocassionally slashing. Klay Thompson would also serve a simillar role but would be comming of the bench. Shooting 3’s, giving his team great spacing and locking down top threats on D is what he is about and why he would be brought over. Chandler Parsons i project as Durant’s primary back-up. he’ll be able to defend both 3’s and 4’s in this tourney and would offer simillar spacing whenever Durant would need a breather. Gordon Hayward is actually my 12th man. i think he’ll make the final cut due to his all around abilities and the fact that he plays hard on both ends of the court. you need an extra shooter, ball handler, shot creator, or defender and he can be that guy.

    Bigs: Davis, Milsap

Anthony Davis as i mentioned earlier would be the primary big used on this team. he’ll be the starter and finisher. he might get a few rests here or there but will be primarily on the court whenever the game will be in question. Paul Milsap I have making the cut as his primary back-up despite being only 6’7". Milsap will not provide the same length or threat on blocking shots, but he’s as good of a rebounder as Davis. his shooting capabilities will be well utilized with his teamates slashing abilities and his overall team approach would make him a solid addition to this unit.

Stephen Curry | Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving
Paul George | James Harden, Bradley Beal
    Kevin Durant | Chandler Parsons
    Anthony Davis | Paul Millsap
    DeMarcus Cousins | Andre Drummond

I have Curry starting over Rose only because of the uncertainty surrounding Rose’s recovery, how many minutes he’ll be able to play, etc. Plus I believe Steph is the best passer of this group.

I have Paul George playing the two because the wing position is essentially interchangeable. Between George and Harden, I just felt like George gives them better defense, more length, and maybe a little bit more of a ball movement and team play-oriented style.

Overall though, I don’t think starters matter much. There’s such an overall accumulation of talent that it will be more a matter of finding groups that click and seeing who plays the best together.

Interestingly, Paul Millsap, 29, would be the only player over 26 years old.

I would start Rose, Curry, Durant, Anthony Davis, and Andre Drummond.

Second team: Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, James Harden, Paul George, and DeMarcus Cousins.

John Wall is in as D Rose insurance.  Kyle Korver gets the last spot as a knockdown 3 point shooter at either the 2 or the 3.

Clutch small ball lineup:  Rose, Curry, Korver, Durant, and Anthony Davis.

Here is something else they could do.

Start out with a small lineup:

Rose, Curry, Kyle Korver, Durant, and Anthony Davis.

Use James Harden as a sixth man filling in for Korver or one of the point guards (probably D Rose?). Let Harden play with the rest of the starting lineup.

Then they can have a complete second unit with shooters at guard and two bigs inside:

Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Paul George, Cousins, and Drummond.

John Wall would be a utility guard filling in for either lineup.
