James Ennis – SG – Miami Heat

James Ennis isn’t your average rookie. He’s already 24 years old with a year of overseas experience under his belt. Ennis, the 50th pick in the 2013 NBA draft, spent the 2013-14 season in Australia’s NBL, where he averaged 21.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Perth Wildcats. But the talent level of even the NBA preseason far exceeds that seen at any point in time in the NBL.
More tantalizing still, Ennis has flashed some nifty passes off the bounce. In Ennis’ own estimation, though, even that shouldn’t come as a shock. However, even in games when Ennis hasn’t stuffed the stat-sheet, he’s been able to make a difference for Miami. Ennis took just one shot against the Golden State Warriors in Miami’s fifth preseason game, yet still finished with the game with a team-best +/- of +15, as pointed out. Ennis isn’t a finished product. His handles in particular need work. But he’s already showing that he has many of the tools to be a successful NBA wing player.

Richard Jefferson – SF – Dallas Mavericks

I have honestly been surprised with Richard Jefferson. He has been playing very well, but more importantly has been playing consistently. He definitely deserves his fair share of minutes. In five games, he’s shooting 46.2 percent from deep. He’s also shown a level of comfort with the offense, cutting to the basket well and even demonstrating an ability to get to the rim after the ball gets swung. Just icing on the cake for the Mavericks.
If Jefferson could only space the floor, that’d be great. He was signed for the veteran’s minimum, and the Mavs aren’t counting on him to do much more than shoot. But he’s proven to be much better than simply a shooter. Granted it’s the preseason so nobody should get too incredibly excited, but it’s a good sign that Jefferson could see more than just spot minutes.

    Al Farouq-Aminu – SF/PF – Dallas Mavericks

I am also impressed with Al-Faroq Aminu who is a great hustle guy. When you can’t shoot well, drive to the basket and go to the free throw line. 88.2%? That’s pretty darn good right there. He has been improving from the three point line. And he’s also just playing with energy. Outside of his shooting woes, his game looks good and he’s doing what the Mavs ask of him. He brings a lot to the table, which is essential given his deficiencies. Aminu was a very cheap addition given that he was signed at the minimum, and was brought in as a kind of experiment. Maybe he can be a mismatch play, be a monkey wrench for opponents to be aware of. So far so good on that front, and it seems he’s solidified a place in the rotation. This preseason has shown that the mavs have a great starting five and very deep and consistent bench.

    Rest of players:
Otto Porter – SF – Washington Wizards
Alec Burks – SG – Utah Jazz
    Rudy Gobert – C – Utah Jazz
    Kentavious Caldwell-Pope – SG – Detroit Pistons
    Jusuf Nurkic – C – Denver Nuggets

otto porter has impressed me,he looks healthy, more confident and he seems to have worked on some of the negatives of his game……

rookies gobert & nurkic have shown maturity, toughness and an outstanding ability to grab rebounds…..they’ll be joining ballclubs that are already among the nba leaders in rebounding….the nuggets and jazz dominance on the boards will keep them in alot of games…

Gobert is heading into his second year, but totally agree. Both should definitley help their ballclubs get a few more wins with their energy and effort.

    Kyle O’quinn

Dude had one scholarship at Norfolk State Coming out of highschool. Came into the league as an energy/bruiser and had showed glimpses of of a nice touch and a willing passer, and has always been a relentless workwr but I have to say him extending his range was a shock to me and is a testament to his work ethic. Not your typical stretch four, I think rarely do we see a player that is known as a bit of a bruiser have that touch, shot blocking and passing ability.

He was bullying Taj in their preseason game and Taj is no pushover on defense. I think his current playing style could land him in foul trouble if he gets any extended minutes, but he has plenty of room to grow.

Perry Jones looks so confident this game right now. He scored 20+ this last game too.
