valentineThis thread is inspired by an Aussie American Football player who is playing very well despite never having played the sport in his life.
Theres also been other guys who have swapped sports…and dominated straight away. Like when Brock Lesnar went to the UFC and became the heavyweight champ.
I’m convinced if Usain Bolt dedicated his life to basketball he could dominate purely from athleticism and length. Looks like hes got a huge wingspan and would lock down on defense.
I also think Jon Jones would be a good player too. Insane reach, quickness and athleticism. His brothers both play pro football too, for whatevers thats worth.
Lastly, having watched Steve Nash goof around playing Soccer, Ive got no doubt he’d be dominant. One would have to assume he’d have great dribbling, passing and shooting skills in that sport too.
Who else could play NBA if they decided to switch sports.
Which NBA players could also play other sports?

Leonard WashingtonParticipantI played against Demaryius Thomas in basketball all 4 years of high school, and he was an absolute beast. I definitely thought he was going D1 and didn’t and know he played football until his Junior year when he started to blow up. He could dunk with ease and drop 20 on any given night while also able to guard every position on the floor (in highschool).

Rip255DeAndre Jordan could make the National Volleyball team. No one could block his spikes.
Zach Lavine could win a gold medal in High jump. Hes got the hops and wiry frame.
Jason Kidd could have been an NFL quarterback.
And Serena Williams could have played WNBA for sure.

Every post aimed at discrediting me only dilutes the quality of information posted and wastes readers time who dont care about petty internet squabbles.
Back to the topic at hand. Would anyone here honestly say that Serrna Williams couldnt play in the WNBA if she practiced daily for 2 years?

Jr. ROXASParticipantI saw Jon Jones play ball in a video and he looked atrocious haha. With all the labels of him being athletic in the octagon, the guy can’t even dunk. He actually isn’t that athletic to in MMA itself in that he isn’t that explosive and fast, but that’s off-topic.I don’t know, 2 years sure as hell isn’t enough for a person even how great physical tools he has to play professional ball. There’s no way.

Rip255I’ll bet you my entire fortune that Jon Jones can Dunk it.
He’s 6’6" (w) shoes and has a 7’1" wingspan. And the guy is crazy athletic…the most athletic in the Light heavyweight or heavyweight division.
Does anyone else here agree that Jon Jones couldn’t dunk it? Because at +4…clearly there is.

Jr. ROXASParticipantWell in this video, he can’t. And even if in subsequent tries he does, you really think a guy who sets up for a layup like that in the video can play in the NBA in 2 years? You’re f*ckin delusional. So are you giving me your entire fortune now? The only proof of him dunking ends up him not even touching the rim. Unless you want to contact Jones personally to dunk for you lol.

T RexIf any NFL player was capable of playing in the NBA within two years, they probably would already be playing basketball, rather than getting their head bashed. Even Julius Peppers.
It’d be a lot easier to go from the NBA to another, less skill dependent sport, which is why we see all these basketball players who couldn’t make the NBA excel in other sports, but not vice-versa.
But the type of football player who might have the best chance of making the NBA within two years would probably be a Kendrick Perkins type big man, who doesn’t need as much skill development.
Peppers was only 6’7, so he wouldn’t make the cut.
Nor would most/all names we could come up with.
Interesting question though.
But I can think of a ton of NBA players who could pick up another sport and be a pro within two years.

whiteflashParticipantThere’s literally NO ONE in another sport that could play in the NBA. The ability to hoop vs the ability to play organized basketball is night and day. It’s chess vs checkers. Running plays and counter plays, reading defensive schemes, reacting to said schemes within the flow of the game while staying in control and contributing all at a lightning fast pace…. Honestly don’t think there’s anyone in another sport that could pull it off. I’ve played Pro-Am with a handful of NFL players and while they’re big and athletic [obviously], they couldn’t play at a really high level, let alone the highest level. However, there are quite a few NBA players that could play other sports. The two best tight ends of all times were middle of the pack college basketball players.

Rip255So NBA players can play other sports…….but people from other sports can’t play NBA?
I disagree…and you’re Naive.
Dikembe Mutombo had never picked up a basketball until he went to College. Before long, he was one of the top players in the country. That’s how fast someone with talent can pick up the sport.
There’s numerous stories of guys like Joel Embiid getting discovered despite hardly playing.
In Australia….we’re recruiting ex NCAA basketball athletes and bringing them over to play Australian Football. Completely different sport…and the first guys are starting to play competitive matches. It took 2 years.
Read about ex Moorehead State player Jason Holmes.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantJimmy Graham and Antonio gates both played basketball in college and became NFL standouts. Gates never even played football in college.
However, for someone to make the transition from football to basketball would be much more difficult imo due to the skill level associated with the game. I’m not saying it would be impossible though.

Make’Em Say UGHParticipantNot sure if this exactly fits the theme, but I find that Greg Paulus had an interesting and unique story. #1 ranked QB in high school turned down a chance to play for Notre Dame to play PG for Duke instead! After he graduated undrafted he tried to spark his football career again at Syracuse.
I think had he went to Notre Dame in the beginning he would’ve had a strong chance to make it to the NFL. (not guaranteed but still strong)
Also had his college basketball career been just a little stronger he could’ve been a fringe NBA player. Maybe as only a specialist by being gritty and a sharp shooter.
I don’t know of that many current athletes today, but I hear that Randy Moss was an exceptional basketball player in highschool along with Jason Williams. I know that Iverson was also more heralded for his football career than basketball in highschool. (which is insane to think of)
So based off of that I wouldn’t say that there’s NOBODY who could cross over although it would be rare instances.

whiteflashParticipantRonald Curry was the National High School Football and Basketball player of the year in the same year. That’s pretty nuts. Went to UNC as a QB but played wideout in the NFL. His basketball career never amounted to anything after high school. Iverson wasn’t more heralded for football, it’s just that football gets more national attention and local attention in most states [Virginia in both he and Curry’s case]. He stopped after his junior year then got in trouble and missed his senior year of basketball. LeBron James was also an All-State receiver as a sophomore in high school. There’s a ton of similar cases. In HS being bigger and more athletic can take you pretty damn far in any sport.

BEARDED-DRAGONParticipantyeah, it would be alot harder than you think for someone to get into basketball, usain bolt is fast, but i have to believe lateral quickness would be an issue for someone who has trained as a straight line sprinter all his life. learning how to shoot… we have all seen him dunk, and i’m not saying he couldnt, but if he ever made the nba he wouldnt "dominate" as you say… but as your post title asks, could he make it in 2 years? yes. someone might give him a second round pick for publicity, and his skill level would be james white, though slightly faster in the open court but less all around athleticism. and alot harder than you think for basketball players to get into other sports… lebron could play football if he learned not to throw himself to the ground and cry if someone touched him. steve nash could have played soccer when he was younger, his brother played professionally and represented canada, but his brother never dominated and he was much better than steve. the only possible ones are those who played another sport at a high level already, deandre jordan would suck at volleyball, but chase budinger would be decent. as he played for 13 yrs and i believe won a national title in college. he probably wouldnt dominate tho.

No doubt he can’t shoot for $hit now, just like how you don’t have any Javelin ability. But the guy hasn’t practiced. If he grew up in America and had a basic exposure to basketball his whole life, I bet he would be awesome.

BEARDED-DRAGONParticipantummmm her making the wnba is different because she played basketball her whole life, winning a national championship in college. still… she was picked in the third round, played for the league minimum, averaged like 2 points and 1 assist (at point guard) in 44 games before she was cut. nolan richardson was her coach, implementing his "40 minutes of hell" style, which should have played to her strengths. they finished 6-28 her first year. worst in the league. she was a huge dissapointment. next year they started out 1-10, then richardson was replaced and the new coach’s first move was to cut marion jones. of course she was in her mid 30’s as a rookie i believe… hmmm, didnt i say usain bolt could probably collect enough skills in 2 years to make it as a publicity stunt. that kinda seems like what this was… and thats what you said, 2 years. not "if he had grown up in the us and played basketball his whole life he’d be awesome". and furthermore, im speaking up, he wouldnt have better lateral quickness than 95% of the people his size or bigger. he may have some lateral quickness from his love of playing soccer, that will help, but you can look up the many difference between strength and conditioning training for straight line sprinters vs multi-directional athletes yourself… im tired of teaching you.

Rip255An input of terrible quality, only matched by the post above.
Can you at least come up with someone….anyone. It would really add value to the discussion, as opposed to your previous post, which only serves to dilute the thread down to sub Bleacher Report levels.

Roland209Participantwas a Heisman trophy winner as a QB for Florida State. Not sure if this is true, but he was ironically too small to play QB in the NFL so he switched to basketball.

Rip255Best example so far. I’d like all those who said No-one from other sports could play in the NBA to read this post.
Then neg me because you feel bad about how you were wrong. At least give this guy +1.

whiteflashParticipantHe didn’t "switch" to basketball, he was a three year starter at Florida State with Bobby Sura and Sam Cassell. He won the Heisman due to FS’s record and the sports politics of the time. He was never a legit NFL prospect at QB also due to the sports politics of the time. He was long considered a solid PG prospect though.

Leonard WashingtonParticipantBelieve it or not, Justin Houston was an excellent basketball player in highschool and could’ve defintely played at the D1 level, and back then he hit shots from the outside pretty well at Statesboro High School..but as far as making it to the NBA, I seriously doubt it. Obviously he made the right decision with playing football. He definitely got paid this summer.

Rip255I think there’s a few more differences than just wearing pads. Similarities exist. However, they are completely different sports.

ChoppyParticipantLook, if I get negs for this post, so be it. There are two sports that begin with "Rugby". Rugby Union, commonly referred to as Rugby, and Rugby League, commonly called League to distinguish it from its closely named cousin. They are similar, but significantly different to prevent common switching between the two (although it does happen). Usually people who follow league hate people who follow rugby. And the feeling is mutual. Jarryd Hayne was a league player, not a rugby player. I’ve heard so many American commentators get it wrong it drives me nuts.
I will leave you with my favourite quote comparing the two games: "Rugby league is a simple game played by simple men. Rugby Union is a complex game played by w4nkers".

ExumInfernoParticipantI think there is the story of the Bulls drafting sprinter Carl Lewis. Very late in the draft when there were lots of rounds.
There would be some track stars who could be brought in and could defend guards in the NBA right away, due to their speed.
Some volleyball players and soccer goalies, at least 6-8 and with long arms and big vertical jumps, they could defend and rebound.
If they were good at putting the ball in the basket then maybe they would already be playing.
Was Dave Winfield drafted by three sports, there are plenty of people in college who could be stars at more than one sport.
One more idea, powerlifters and strongmen. Brian Shaw, no relation to the guard in the NBA and coach, is 6-8 and 400 pounds of muscle. I think he would be able to step into the NBA and own the paint for rebound position, plus he could set screens. He wouldn’t be running on fast breaks.

Rip255Quality input.
I totally agree with you re: Strongman athletes. Those guys would set massive screens. grab boards and play solid interior defense. If they properly trained, they could give you 6-8 minutes a night as a backup C. They could play an "enforcer" type role that competes hard when the team is lacking energy. They’d trim down to 320lbs to make the roster.
Carl Lewis was indeed drafted. I wonder how much game he actually had. He could have been a Corey Brewer type of gunner on the break.

whiteflashParticipantNo. First, strongman Brian Shaw played D2 or D3 basketball in Colorado. That’s about as far as he could make it. Second, defense has a whole lot more to it than straight away speed in track spikes on the right surface with the wind at your back…. There is not one sprinter out there who could step in and guard NBA players, or even good college/high school prospects. Don’t care how fast you are if you hit the deck and injure yourself when someone hits you with a step back or crossover. Good actual basketball playing defenders get crossed. Do you honestly believe some track star could just walk onto the court and lock people down? And the strongman/powerlifter argument is even sillier than the track athlete argument. And, NO, there’s no soccer goalie or volleyball player that could come in and rebound or defend. Rebounding and defending have so much more to them than just jumping or being athletic. This post was ridiculous.

T RexThe Jones brothers (Jon and Chandler) are as amazingly talented as the Gibb brothers. If you think the Gibb brothers were limited to the Bee Gees, you should know that there were just too many ultra-talented Gibbs. They dominated like the Jackson 6, but with less weird sleepovers.
My point is that the wrong Jones was mentioned, and Chandler probably would have more potential as a basketball player.
TLDR: Chandler Jones = Andy Gibb

omphalosParticipantI’ve always thought Nic Naitanui could have made it to the NBA if he pursued basketball intead of Australian Rules football over here.
He’s a 6’8 Fijian Australian with ridiculous hops, powerful Lebron-like frame (I said frame!) and is very quick over short distances. He has great hands, and I think he could make the switch with two years of solid training after having prior experience as a basketball player.
Does anyone think Nick Kyrgios (Tennis player) would be able to switch to any level of basketball if he quits tennis like he’s threatened to? Has good size for a guard, but doesn’t seem quick enough.

Rip255I think Krgyios would have sneaky lateral quickness. Side to side on that baseline.
I think his game would resemble Manu Ginobli, but with attitude.
And those who don’t know Nic Natinui…he has Lebron like athleticism. No joke. 6’8 and jacked too. Check the highlights. He literally jumps on peoples shoulders.

XYRYXParticipantI think Charlie Ward won the Heissman (spelling sorry) trophy before he went for a semi successful basketball career. He wasn’t really bad as a Knick along Starks but many believed he chose the wrong Sport as he hadn’t really true point guard instincts on offense but overall hadn’t many flaws also and was just a great athlete.
So he was a little bit of the other was around.
I’ve seen some german Soccer national team players and other top tier team athletes (Handball!!!, Volleyball) play 3 on 3 Matches or other basketball and I know that players like Schweinsteiger or Lucas Podolski many spanish or baltic/balkan Soccer players love basketball and especially in big clubs like Real Madrid, Barca or Bayern Munich or the greece player are very close to the other top tier club athletes.
I don’t want to say NBA level within two years is possible at all but there are a lot of athletes who compete in different olympic areas and I don’t know why a 6’9" Champions League Handball player can’t be as talented in his Sport as in basketball. Wasn’t Mike Dunleavy a 3 Sport college athlete???

Rip255Ive seen those handball guys when I lived in Europe and they share a lot of the same instincts regarding passing and shooting…and they’re also terrific athletes and quite big. Those post-players in handball do the same thing as guys like Al Jeff.
Set screens…use their body to get good positioning, try to get high percentage shots and also play physical.
