Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars met with Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith at 12:01 a.m. ET with a plan to make the free agent forward a substantial four-year offer, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Atlanta has shown far more interest in working sign-and-trade arrangements for Smith than re-signing him to a long-term deal, league sources said.
Along with re-signing point guard Jose Calderon, Smith is the Pistons’ top priority on the market, league sources told Y! Sports.
The Pistons planned to make a preemptive strike on Smith, understanding that he’s a secondary priority for several teams awaiting the resolution of the Dwight Howard derby, sources said.
Smith, 27, is one of the free-agent stars on the market, a versatile 6-foot-9 forward that Dumars would add to a front line that includes Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. Smith averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Hawks last season.
Dumars also will meet with forward Andre Iguodala on Monday in Los Angeles, but it’s doubtful the Pistons have the willingness to outbid Denver to sign him. Denver GM Tim Connelly and coach Brian Shaw plan to meet with Iguodala in Los Angeles on Monday and present him with a contract extension, league sources told Y! Sports.

The pistons need someone that can score 20-25 nightly I see Danny Granger or even Tyreke Evans if he wants to play the 3 here. IMO I think they need a scorer I get Kevin Martin to

  I would rather have KCP as of right now for the Pistons then those guys you listed. I believe he is going to be a good pro, a very good two way player. This team is just starting to come out of rebuilding mode, and they gotten some great young talent.

Detroit is going to end up a team with no go to scorer. No effective cruncher time scorer. Monroe, Smith, Stuckey can all fill it up but in crunch time it is important to have a guy that can create his own shot in many different scenarios and positions on the floor whether it is an ISO, screen, set shot, post up, cut, pull up, alley-pop, or miracle shot. Big men cannot create there own shot as well because it is easy to double them and have them uncoordinated down low. Calderon will establish an offence any player in the league can find easy buckets in and he should thrive with Smith, Monroe, and Drummond in the pick and roll. But the same thing happened to the Calderon/Bosh Raptors. Having no closer only gets you so far. Stuckey would have to have a career year if this happens.

  The reason that you don’t offer him a max deal is because he is not consistent. You do not give max deals to players that are none for taking nights off. I like him a lot on the Pistons cause he does fill a need for them and I think he can be good for that team. But I just don’t want them to give him a max deal. To me he is just not a max player.

I hope Josh Smith signs with them…the pistons need small forward who can post up, block shots, and versatile, defend, rebound and help cover up monroe being a defensive liability(beside drummond). I do agree with the poster above who said the pistons need a “closer”. I strongly believe that this season will be “put up or get put out” for BK. If knight doesn’t improve this season you can guarantee he’s not going to be a piston on 15′ and I think that spot will be open for a point guard who knows how to “close out” games. Reports are that the pistons are keeping an eye on bledsoe. I think if josh smith goes to the pistons this gives them time to groom (tony mitchell) and by the time smiths contract is up mitchell should be ready. Also this gives the pistons one of the best front lines in the NBA. Finally, if sheed signs as an asst. coach he could have a positive impact on smith.
Plus it does make the pistons a playoff contender in the east.

Josh Smith used to be one of my favourite players but as a Pistons fan I am not so sure he will be worth the money.
If they are looking at a 4 year deal: $40 mill would be good buying, $50mill would be pushing it and $60+ I think is too much to pay although i am sure some muppet GM out there would pay that for him.
I am not sure if he will slim down to play SF or if they will use Monroe / Drummond / Smith rotation at 4 & 5 spot. They could always get James Johnson or Corey Brewer as cheap insurance at SF

Most likely he would be the 2nd- 3rd scorer(behind monroe) The pistons want him to be a 15-17 ppg 8rpg 2bpg kind of player. He will not be the go to scorer. What the pistons want him to be is that defensive anchor on the perimeter and help out downlow, who can guard the sf and pf. And be versatile, bring the energy and intangibles (create mismatches as well).I do agree, he’s not worth 60 for 4 years. Maybe around the 50 range. Signing Josh Smith goes way beyond just scoring. As for him slimming down it is possible, especially with the season starting in nov.
  He would be best used when we play The Heat (guarding leBron) Bulls (Luol Deng) OKC (Durant), Toronto (Gay), etc.

Good thing they just drafted a shooter, because they will need their backcourt to really space the floor. That said, they are likely to be a strong post-up team, so they probably could get away without great shooting, much like the Grizzlies do.
This move would help the Pistons in the short term, but I worry that it will hurt them long term. I assume Smith would play both forward positions, but putting him at SF may limit some of his defensive impact. The Pistons also still don’t look like a contender, and I am not sure how they build from here. Their backcourt is pretty weak.
Now, the Pistons traded a first rounder to the Bobcats that is top-8 protected in 2014 and just top-1 protected in 2015, so it makes sense for them to avoid having a a terrible season next year, but I still worry that they are just now going to be able to build anything more than a low-seeded playoff team before they lose Drummond in free agency, which I assume they will with big contracts to Smith and Monroe on the books.

Do the Pistons have the space to sign him outright? If not, what can they offer the Hawks in a sign and trade? Ferry will not take on players just for the heck of it. Only way I see the Hawks agreeing to a sign and trade with the Pistons is if they include a coveted 2014 draft pick. With Knight-Pope-Smith-Monroe-Drummond lineup, I can see the Pistons gambling and dealing a ’14 pick thinking that they are set up for the future already.

Well, hopefully meeting for five hours is productive. Smith had a tumultuous stay with Atlanta and never really hit his stride due to inconsistent play. The Pistons have two big men that dominate the paint with Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe, so J-Smoove might have to be on the perimeter in more with the Pistons, which isn’t exactly when he’s at his best. Smith will meet with the Rockets and Hawks on Monday.
