MatosParticipantJust hearing that Pau Gasol is replacing Jimmy Butler as an all-star.
Statistically, Pau is averaging 17ppg, 10.9rpg, 2blks, 22.34PER
Kevin Love is averaging 15.8ppg, 10.4rpg, 0.6blks, 19.23PERAlthough K-Love is slightly beat across the board in comparison to Pau statistically, with Cleveland being tops in the east and Jimmy Butler still considered as a bulls player selected to the all-star team, isn’t it more important to have the #1 seed Cavs have more than one player in the ASG as opposed to the 7th seeded bulls getting another player?
Lets put aside the mass hatred toward Love’s style of play and consider the fact that if a non-former all-star was putting up his numbers playing alongside Lebron James on the top seeded team in the conference, they would surely be in.
Thoughts?

NJHooper95ParticipantYou have people that say winning matters and and put in four Hawks last year and now Cavs are best in the East and have only one, when teams fighting just to remain in the playoffs have two. I don’t know, I have no problem with a good player on a bad team getting selected because I believe there are great players on bad teams, but if people say we reward winning then stay consistent with it.

FaceOfTheFranchiseParticipantAs you stated Pau is having a better year than Love and the Bulls are still in the playoffs. Not only that but why have another player from the same smaller city of Cleveland, than a player from a huge market in Chicago.
I know personally, once JB went down with the injury I had no reason to watch the all star game with no Bulls on the court, and I would say about 50% of fans would do the same. However with Pau in it makes me want to watch the game that much more. You gotta remember this is as much of a business as it is a game.
Losing out on millions of fans for one game is not worth it to the league, and why not have the better player in the game anyway, regardless of seeding at the moment. Love has plenty of years left and this may be the last time Pau makes it to the all star game too.

BlueLacesParticipantI think you might be over estimating Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls influence on the all-star game. I don’t think there is going to be millions of fans lost because there isn’t a Bull in the all-star game.

FaceOfTheFranchiseParticipantI may have worded it differently than I thought, but I’m just saying that Butler is a rising star and fan favorite in Chicago. And the casual Chicago basketball fan will probably pay less attention/tune in to a game without any hometown players.
Their influence has less to do with the actual game than it does with TV ratings as there’s around 5 million people in the city and suburbs. Again not saying every single fan won’t watch but the lesser basketball enthusiasts will not be as inclined to tune in.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantIf your whole case for love being selected comes down to "Cleveland has the best record in the east so they deserve 2 all-stars" that’s a pretty weak argument. You have to remember that this is still an individual achievement, and gasol has individually been better than love this season.

MatosParticipantKyle Korver made it last year over Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe, Al Jefferson, Kemba Walker, Nikola Vucevic.
I dont want to hear any "Because the better player should get in". The NBA seems to not follow that notion so since they dont, they should be consistent with their notion of rewarding the best teams. I’m all for the notion of the better player SHOULD be in if the NBA were to follow this when selecting reserves and replacements, but they dont follow that.

PurpleMonkeyDishwasherParticipantIt is just an exhibition game! It is not a big deal to Pau Gasol’s or Kevin Love’s life. So what if it isn’t a Cleveland play… they have their coach there and any coach with less career wins that Kurt Rambis should be very grateful for the opportunity.

ExumInfernoParticipant48% and 3 assists, while Love is at 42% and 2.5 assists, Gasol is the bigger star this season.
Pau is even hitting better from 3.
Cleveland only has one huge superstar, and next in line there is probably Irving and not Love.
