SportsNinjaParticipantI couldn’t even get on! I’m assuming there were other people with that issue? The NBA draft is the Super Bowl (ratings wise) of this site and I wasn’t able to get on. I was curious so I ran a search: nba draft. This site was number 2 behind ESPN. So on a day when everyone who hasn’t heard of this site can appreciate it in all it’s glory, it isn’t accessible?
I’m sure some people had no problems, but I tried several times throughout the draft and had issues every time. If it’s a bandwidth issue, up your capabilities for the month! Whatever the issue may be, this is the one day you want your site in pristine shape. Not only do the loyal contributors and point givers. . . and take-awayers want to come on and talk to their internet buddies about the draft, but you can reach thousands of potential new viewers.
I know it happens every year, but every year I hope it’ll be different. . .

MartijnKeymasterHi,
I am very sorry you couldn’t get on last night. Every Draft Night we have a sizeable team working behind the scenes to make sure the site works well on Draft Night. Aran actually spends a great deal of money to increase bandwidth, servers, systems, infrastructure and people to keep the site running for the night.
We had a series of issues that worked against us this year. Initially, all was going fine, when we were suddenly hit by what we suspect was a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDOS). We worked hard to deal with the incoming attack, and managed to mitigate its’ effects. The site worked fine for about 5 minutes after this, at which point our DNS provider also suffered what appears to have been DDOS, again directed at nbadraft.net. We worked hard behind the scenes to get them to resolve this, which eventually they did. We are still to hear from them in an "official" capacity, but our thinking is that they had some automatic filter that kicked in.
We are all very upset that the site wasn’t available for some time last night, especially given the amount of money and preparations that go into it. We usually start working on this a few months before. We only get one shot at this, once a year, and each year we do our best to implement the "lessons learnt" from the previous year. We just got very unlucky this year.
Aran works very, very hard on nbadraft.net and he is just one of the nicest guys we work for. I know he appreciates your patience and loyalty, as do we. Let me know if you have any questions and comments, and we will do our best to answer these for you.
Thanks!

CynthiaParticipantFor those of you who do not understand technical lingo (DDoS) it basically means the site got hacked.

Sewok15ParticipantIt was weird because I kept trying to get on and eventually I did but then it slowed to a crawl. My computer was then hit with some redirecting virus BS that would take any link I clicked on from Google and take me to some businesslist.net service…I am assuming it was just a coincidence with the timing but is it possible that it was related?

CynthiaParticipantProbably just a coincidence that you picked up some adware. If you have Chrome/Firefox just go to extensions and see if there’s an odd looking one there, if so deactivate & delete it.
If you have Internet Explorer then it’s probably on your actual machine, I’d suggest running Malwarebytes or Avira.

Sewok15ParticipantI took care of it but it was just odd timing…I downloaded Malwarebytes a few weeks back after getting the “FBI Virus”. I gotta stop letting my dad use my laptop….

CynthiaParticipantYeah I hear you, just about every time my kids use the computer something is a bit off. They click on everything…

King CaluchaParticipantWow… too bad. I wanted to access the site, too. I can’t really complain because I’m not putting any money here. You guys do a great job all year long and obviously, certain incidents can’t be prevented.

ChoppyParticipantSeriously some people need to get a life. Hacking a site dedicated to the draft on the night of the draft is pretty low even for hacker scum.
