The Scare Crow RisesParticipantEnd of the game madness, Marcus Smart just melted down and shoved a fan after he chased down a Texas Tech player and stopped an easy dunk…
Smart falls into the crowd and then has a Dennis Rodman moment on Texas Tech’s home court…
I don’t know what sparked Smart to react this way but as a Greedy ass 76ers fan I hope this has an negative effect on his draft stock and that we get super lucky and land him with the Pelican’s pick in the lottery…(Always thinking draft LOL)
Can someone please upload the video to the end of the OK State and Texas Tech game

DC FrazParticipantI hope he doesn’t get the "thug" title either man. In my opinion the person had to say something off the charts because Smart wouldn’t act like that, especially in a close game. I know Smart is labeled as an aggressor and a hot head, but he’s a good kid.
I really want to know what the fan said though.

the I in winParticipantthe fan called him a n—–. I also saw his wife was pointing her rolled up piece up paper and talking shit as well.
To the loser racist Texas Tech fan, you are over 50 years old and this 20 year old who you are discriminating against simply because he is black and plays for the opposite team of yours and that 20 year old has already accomplished more in his life than you have in yours, he is one year away from millions and fame while you will still be a insignificant old racist in a year. To take a card from the Lebron post Mavs loss, Marcus Smart will get through this suspension and still get to live his life while Mr. Jeff Orr will still live his life which high lights with going to red raider games and calling kids N—–s.
To anyone that has access to Mr. Jeff Orr please do some vigilante shit, otherwise we will see him profit from this situation just as Zimmerman is doing with his celeb boxing matches.

Sewok15ParticipantAs a Sixers fan we don’t need Marcus Smart…he has proven to be a knucklehead this season…and actually may have hurt his stock although he is improved as a player. They already have 2 PG’s who can’t shoot in MCW and Tony Wroten…what would Smart bring that either of those two can’t?

mikeyvthedonParticipantMan, Marcus has got to keep it together. You just do not do that, he had a second to walk away and just pushed the guy. Not that it was an absolute assault where the guy could press charges on (at least I don’t think it was, you never know), though it certainly was a play that should have got him tossed. He will more than likely be suspended for a while.
Am sure whatever the guy said was awful. Still just something you do not do. Never have heard a player commended for getting into a physical altercation with a fan, it just makes you look bad in the end, which is probably the fans intention in the first place. Have been a huge fan of Smart, but he has had a few bad judgement calls this year and this is a monumental lack of it. Will not be surprised if he gets suspended for at least a few games, something a struggling team like Oklahoma State definitely did not need from a guy who has been playing at an All-American level once again.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantHe’s still a very good player, he just lost his mind for 10 seconds and is going to pay for it, I think he’ll get suspended for sure, they may even ban him for this, I don’t argee with a ban but the NCAA could do it…
He’s certainly going to drop a few spots in the draft, he was top 5-7 before this with some serious question marks already, I think he’s about to slide into the 10-20 range ala Shabazz Mohammed last year…
76ers need every bit of talent in this draft and if Smart is the BPA when we select with the Pelican’s pick than I have no problem taking him
Just think about it, he was a Top 3 lock last year, a Top 5 lock all season, and I’d be over the moon if we landed him in the Lottery and still had our own top 3 pick(Parker/Wiggins/Randle or Exum)

jwall1ParticipantReally? 10-20 range. ROFL. He is overally a good kid, and made a mistake. I really do not see this affecting his draft stock much. He is still an intriguing talent and the best guard in the draft (or 2nd best if you consider Wiggins as a 2).

Now it was all out of "fustration" he’s a great competitor and all but he wouldn’t do anything like that out of fustration not much to be fustrated about when you know your still going to be a lottery pick..that fan was out of line and the big 12 should look futher into this…these are still college kids

mikeyvthedonParticipantHe should face consequences as well, I am sure what he said (if it was the racial epithet stated earlier) is flat the hell out awful. One would hope he would be dealt with for his part in this. Now, does Marcus Smart pushing this guy really do anything for Marcus? Did it help Oklahoma State? I am sure the fan was probably $hitting himself, but the answer is no. It did not help Marcus or his team.
Think we can all sympathize with someone saying something horrible and us wanting to strike back. The major thing here is, it does not help. Marcus hurt himself more than he hurt that guy. Plus, ultimately, he fell right into a trap that the guy wanted him to walk into in the first place. You do not say what he did if you were not trying to emit a negative reaction and he definitely did.
For as much as one can make jokes about it "not being Smart" or talking about it being lucky it was not Malice in the Palace, I don’t see why one thinks what he did was not at least sort of serious. I have seen players say things to fans who are being idiots, just have never seen anything good come of something beyond that. If he had just walked away, or told the coaches or referee’s, that is the best thing he could have done.
As far as his draft stock, I doubt it takes too much of a dive. This has been a much tougher season for him than last year due to the teams lack of size and I still think he is incredibly talented. However, I think he does need some help after this one. Something is bothering him and if it is just losing, he has to handle it much better than he has. The Texas Tech fan was obviously an idiot, though Marcus did not have to stoop down to his level.
This is also not the first time his emotions have gotten the better of him this season. Have never seen a good thing come out of getting physical with a fan and it just is not something that benefitted Marcus or his team in the least. To say that this is tolerable under the circumstances really has next to no precedent in sports. If you push a fan, it is not a good thing.
As much of an idiot as Jeff Orr (the Texas Tech fan in question) may be in letting his emotions get the best of him, Marcus Smart is expected to keep his in check as a leader of his team. Am not expecting him to be perfect and realize this was a heat of the moment thing for Marcus. Just also know he had promised to keep his composure and this was an absolute failure to do so.
I hope people do not judge him too harshly, just also believe that a suspension may be warranted. Also think that professional help might not be the worst idea, especially given his future as a relied upon NBA player. You look at the history of getting physical with fans and it just never turns out well for the player.

A.M.G.ParticipantFans can’t just say whatever they want and expect the players to just take it. If the fan indeed said "go back to africa" he deserved worse. Honestly Smart is talented enough that this won’t affect his draft stock much, might push him out of the top 5 but not out of top 10. It’s being blown out of proportion, things liek this happen, in some places the fans are slobbering fanatical retards who will say racist things to get a rise out of opposition players, and I for one vote that they deserve to get punched in the face for it occasionally, let alone shoved. Suspend him for one game and then move the **** on, it was a shove, not a punch, who effing cares. And we all know it was almost certainly for something racist being said.

surveParticipantall I got to say is….the report is the guy said something racist. what Marcus Smart did was wrong. but IMO it was justified. people think these guys are robots and dont have emotions or that player A has to react the same way as player B. Markel Brown may not have reacted the same way, so that makes Smart a bad guy now? people always yelling that "learn how to control your emotions". in the heat of the moment you black out. things happen before you get a chance to even think. its human nature, especially if you feel threatened.
I have managed to keep my cool in some situations where some others wouldve went to jail. then again, I have been caught totally off guard and before I could think I said or did something that I regretted. I am sure Smart regrets this….but you cant go around provoking people and in a sense using their status against them. Like you can just say anything out your mouth because a kid wouldnt be stupid enough to put his hands on you because he has much more to lose than you.

like, would you still draft DeMarcus Cousins after Turner/Favors/Johnson because of his attitude?

TallmanNYCParticipantIt’s just a shove, but this is the sort of thing that gets overblown. And often the young players don’t handle the media attention that well and they make it worse. Smart needs to get ready for a question about this incident from every reporter, every time, for the next year. Then it will slow down to every other reporter.
And this might effect is draft position, especially if he doesn’t handle the negative media attention afterwards. And every position down on the draft, lowers his rookie salary by about $200k to $300k per year, so about $750k lost for that shove if it knocks his draft stock just one step.

strobox88ParticipantLooks like the fan said something foul and didn’t expect Smart to react to it, thus you can read his lips saying something like "Sorry about that…" right before the shove.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI can’t believe some of you are defending Marcus Smart and saying what he did was justified… It’s never justfied when an athlete puts his hands on a fan. The only way it would’ve been justifiable is if that fan put his hands on him first. Had the fan did that, Smart would’ve had every right to knock him the eff out.
The fan should be disciplined by officials, not Smart putting his hands on him with thousands of people watching and cameras everywhere… How dumb. Smart is the leader of his team, a potential NBA top five pick and a future NBA franchise player/millionaire. Scouts are watching him, on and off of the court. He’s headed towards being able to take care of he and his family for life. With what happened in the Palace Brawl, what team wants a potential hot head who can’t control his emotions when it comes to dealing with dumb heckling fans?
I’ve read the fan said, "Go back to Africa…" I mean, COME ON lol… Is it THAT deep? Smart should’ve effin laughed in that fan’s face. Literally. Number one, Smart is just as American as that fan is. I don’t know too many (if any) black people that were born in Africa. I mean, this is 2014… Who’s still getting mad over that? As black people we need to move past that dumb ish… And… I’ve been to Africa several times. Beautfiul. It’s not how you think it looks based on what tv shows. If that fan was trying to be racist, he sucks at it. What an idiot.
I’m not defending the fan at all. Just think that if Smart really wanted to stick it to that fan, he should’ve went to the refs and told them what that fan said… Then had that fan ejected and escorted out in front of everyone. Then that fan should’ve been disciplined by school officials and banned from a certain amount of future games.
No, Smart doing what he did is not justifiable. And yes, he’s going to be disclipined because this isn’t the first or last time a fan will get out of hand. The NCAA can’t have players getting involved with fans. It’s a bad look period. Smart’s draft stock might not be impacted, but it definitely would if I were an owner of a franchise. I’d think a whole bunch of times before I put the keys of my hundreds of millions investment in his hands. IF I’m his future agent, I’m putting him in anger management/emotional control classes.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantWhen it comes to someone calling you an extremely offensive racial slur (the N-word being the most offensive because of it’s connotation, especially coming from an old white man from the south), it is no longer fan vs student-athlete.
It is race vs race, man vs man.
These athletes are KIDS and PEOPLE, not robots or animals that should take it when a fan thinks they can be tough just because they’re a fan. This is the 21st century and those types of slurs shouldn’t be used, at least not in the way that the "fan" used it in.
Marcus Smart is a 19 year old kid while the old man is clearly over 60 years old. When you put two and two together, we have a white man that was clearly raised during the time of segregation/in the south and a 19 year old that’s trying to make a career for himself, you cannot cross that line and say that to a kid.
At what point does it become personal responsibility to stand up for yourself? If the man indeed used that word, where does it stop? If he’s used it once to Marcus Smart, how many other student-athletes did he say it to? How many other fans use it to heckle 18 and 19 year olds? Where does it end? The only way it ends, is if a player does something like this.
Do you think after this incident, the fan is going to be throwing that word around at another game? Of course not, he’s going to think twice about it next time and so will other fans around the country. You can’t use a racial slur and get away with it, especially when using it towards a 19 year old as a 60 year old man that knows the connotation to that word better than the 19 year old because they’ve experienced it.
I’m not trying to be offensive, maybe it’s just a minority thing. As a minority, you wouldn’t believe how many times I hear a racial slur when I’m at the store in this day and age and I’m pretty sure Smart has heard racial slurs against him before. This must have been the straw that broke the camels back.
To be honest, I wouldn’t expect a white Caucasian to understand this.

Sewok15ParticipantAs a white I Caucasian I cannot begin to understand what it would be like to be targeted with the N word because there is no equivalent word that refers to white people. People that act like words like "cracker" are the same thing have no idea what they are talking about. It is ridiculous that there are people out there who would verbally attack someones race especially at a college basketball game. This is supposes to be a huge Texas Tech fan and the last time I checked their 3 best players were black. It is not only highly offensive but pretty hypocritical and he truly deserved to get what was coming to him. As for that being enough to stop other idiots like this guy from doing similar things I highly doubt it will do much. Maybe if Smart would have knocked him out he would have gotten a real point across.
Obviously it wouldn’t have been a good idea to hit the guy and even pushing him will cost him pretty heavily. He should have ignored the guy and walked away but I can understand how in that moment your emotions can get the best of you. Some teams might take him off their draft boards but his talent will still prevail and he won’t fall too far. I hope the NCAA doesn’t go too hard on him and feel like a 5 game suspension would be fair. He would be back for their big home game against Kansas and the other 2 final regular season games.

HaleParticipantI’m putting almost all of the blame on Smart for this one. Instead of getting up and going back to the court he went out of his way and took 2-3 steps into the crowd to get the dude.

King CaluchaParticipantIn other sports, fans can yell whatever they want to the players… and they can’t complain (unless it’s something racist). Probably not a big deal, but it definitely shows he’s immature.
Why take a risk on someone who looked like Ron Artest on a college game? Smart slipping out of the top 3 for good in 3, 2, 1…

Memphis MadnessParticipantThis guy is lucky he didn’t get knocked out. Poor behavior by the fan.
Unfortunately Marcus Smart wasn’t a Duke player at home. If so, it would have been a foul on the fan with Smart going to the line for 2.

Ghost01ParticipantAs Indiana said, you just have to control yourself. There have always been racist basketball fans. You’re a player, they aren’t. You are on your way to making millions. They are not.
If Smart’s stock is hurt because of his recent behavior that has culminated in this incident, that is his fault and its deserved.

llperezobviously the fan crossed a line. We still do not know what he said. According to him he said something regrettable and inappropriate but certainly did not use a racial slur and according to espn all witness agree they never heard a racial term thrown. It does matter a bit because it effects the level of how mad smart could have been.
Whatever, it has no impact on smarts draft status. Smart needs to worry more about hitting jumpers then this moment which will be long forgotten come next june.

HitsterParticipantIn football in the UK there has been a huge drive to rid racist chanting from the grounds and it does seem to be working. In the NBA I bet no fans sat near the bench would say too much as microphones could pick it up and if that guy has said something racial to Smart then he deserves a lifetime ban from the college.
There is perhaps still a racist element in all countries be it the UK or USA etc but if people like the Orr guy has an issue with black people then why the heck is he attending basketball games where there is a damn good chance a fair proportion of the roster will be black, mixed race etc. If he is that narrow minded then he should stay away from the sport.
Smart will have time to reflect on his actions, we all know that players trash talk/sledge and the opposition fans will boo/geer but when it goes to racist terms then that is crossing the line. I’ve attended numerous sports down the years and often fans will shout out funny putdowns which even the target’s team mates may laugh about.
Lets not forget MJ was one of the greatest trash talkers ever, he is rumoured to have told the guy guarding him exactly what move he will make and then go ahead and do it, he was that good. The opposition player had to try and stop him but couldn’t or foul him which is what MJ had as the back up option to get to the line.

joecheck88ParticipantBoth were wrong. Marcus Smart needs to hold himself to a higher standard though. You just can’t do it. I do not care what was said. You have to be better than the fan. Marcus is a good kid and he isn’t a punk, thug, or anything like that. He lost his cool for a minute and handled it great after the fact. I doubt his stock takes a hit because of it.
Also, if proven that he said something racial, should be banned for the rest of the season.
