AmiableBaller34ParticipantCoach of the Year: Terry Stotts, his system is predicated on a lot of ball movement and motion, and it seems his players have bought into what he’s giving them. Honorable mention goes to Brad Stevens and Hornesek who have their teams playing hard every night.
ROY: Olidipo. MCW has been impressive, but he’s regularly hurt (only 15 games), and I wouldn’t be surprised if Philly tanked hard and sat him for stretches with these kind of injries throughout the year. Olidipo has also been pretty good in that time.
MVP: Durant. I know people are saying "it’s LeBron’s to lose" with that video game stat line he’s putting up, but I think Durant is more important this year to the Thunder. He’s become a better passer, and helps get OKC moving every night. The Thunder have a better record than the Heat, and are 19-4 in the tough West, so I give the edge to Durant thus far.
MIP: Jordan Crawford has improved more than anyone this year, and has shaken off the "chucker" moniker that stigmatized him for most of his career (He’s putting up 13.8 ppg, 5.5 apg, 3.2 rpg on 45/37/86 %, and an 18+ PER, who would have thought?). Reggie Jackson and Spencer Hawes are other guys that come to mind. I can’t say Bledsoe, because this is what we knew he was capable of doing.
DPOY: Paul George. Every time I watch the Pacers play, he’s playing shutdown D on the opposing teams best wing player. He does a little of everything out there, and is a great team defender too. I think this choice though is always a little more subjective than the rest, and think their are a handful of players who deserve mention.

King CaluchaParticipantThe MIP goes to the player with better improvement regardless of expectations. There are several players who are having bigger stat leaps than Jordan Crawford in my opinion.

AmiableBaller34ParticipantStats aren’t always indicative of a players growth though, and it’s an insult to the players who actually put in the work to improve every year. I know that’s not how it’s voted upon, but I respect the players who put in the time to improve their games and exceed expectations, and Jordan Crawford has done just that. (Really, did you think Crawford would flirt with a 20 PER to start the year? You’re lying if you said yes)
Sure guys like Bledsoe, Afflalo, Turner, and Drummond improved their stats but they didn’t really improve their advanced statistics all that much. Crawford in years past was a negative in WinShares, now he’s at 2.5 WS to go along with his 113 ORT, which is the highest of his career. His other best season being a 98 ORT. His AST% is up nearly 10% from his last year with the Wizards, and he’s sporting a .57 TS%, which is above and beyond the best TS% of his career.
This to me shows more improvement than some of the other guys being mentioned. I look at guys like Bledsoe who’s stats have INCREASED with USAGE, while Crawfords stats have INCREASED while his usage has DECREASED from 27.3% with his time with the Wizards, to an effective 21.7 USG% this year with the Celtics.
It’s not that far fetched to put Crawford in the discussion…

King CaluchaParticipantStats aren’t always an indicative… but expectations are? And then you cite PER (which in my opinion is a terrible indicator for performance) and other stats as part of your argument… smh
I agree that Crawford has become a solid player this season, but so have many others…

AmiableBaller34ParticipantYes! It’s easy to predict what some players are capable of doing, and PER 36 stats prove that, as does the eye test. Bledsoe averaged 14.2 ppg, 4.8 RPG, and 5.3 apg as a starter last year for the Clippers in 12 games. What did he improve? His shooting percentage has gone up, but what else? Bledsoe is just getting more time, and the facts/stats are all the proof you need.
I don’t want to pick on Bledsoe, but he seems to be the uninimous pick here, and I don’t think it’s that concrete. Maybe I’m just arguing semantics and have a different understanding of what "Most Improved" stands for, but to me, a player turning their career a full 180 degrees is more impressive than another player getting an extra 14 minutes a game. I understand that’s not how the voting works, but that doesn’t make it right.

aivsdirkParticipantmy man that was a interesting premise, stating thats stats are not everything, but the majority of what you have written on this topic is backed by stats. If you like stats then like em, dont be contradictory.

LindseyParticipantPaul George probably wont win it again this year, MIP, but I like the narrative of someone improving sooo much to win it back to back. Also I think that jump from allstar on a good team, to leader and best player on a contender is very overlooked and probably a lot harder to do that going from bench to starter.
I also see George being one of the first MVP candidates and top 5 players who isnt ball dominant at all. Probably the poster boy for getting his within the teams offensive flow.

Toronto16ParticipantCoach of the Year – Jeff Hornacek
ROY – Michael Carter-Williams
MVP – Chris Paul
MIP – Eric Bledsoe
DPOY – Roy Hibbert
I put Chris Paul as MVP because yes, Lebron has a video game stat line going, but the Heat look horrible when Wade is out. Chris Paul does EVERYTHING for that Clippers offense as they would be lottery bound without him.

Wavy BagelsParticipantCOY – Stotts – I can’t think of anyone that had Portland #1 in the West so far.
ROY – Oladipo – MCW has been missing games and I think he’ll hit a rookie wall by the season’s end.
MVP – CP3 – For the same reasons Toronto16 pointed out.
MIP – Bledsoe – Who would’ve thought the frontcourt combo of Dragic and Bledsoe would work? Frontrunner, although I wish he’d cut th TO’s down.
DPOY – Hibbert – Not just because he’s blocking shots and anchoring the paint for the Pacers, but he’s having FUN making defensive plays for his teammates.

aivsdirkParticipantROY- 2 horse race, not too many players from this draft was better than decent in the 1st place
DPOY-It could be Hibbert, the way the warriors are falling without iggy it could be him if he stays healthy when he comes back. could be alot of people
MVP-Aldridge-will he win it who knows, but to have his team in the position they are in seemingly on the way to atleast a top 3 seed in the west is big. Other than him Lebron Durant ,and Cp3. Paul george is still too inconsistent offensively with shooting and too many TOs to be in the top of MVP voting for me.
MIP-Lawson in my opinion. Bledsoe has the most improved numbers, but lawson has the most improved role(leadership) and not as many turnovers.
COY-who knows with this one again i know its fun to do this early in the year voting but lets see where the teams are after 2013 is over. Too be honest the way the bobcats have played the last couple years if they make the playoffs i dont care if the east doesnt get better. I would give it to there coach. Al is being that centerpeice they needed and they are competing with everybody even if thier record is mediocre. There not getting crushed in most of their losses like the rest of east. Mostly the sub .400 teams.
