NCarmean18ParticipantI’m not so sure about Deshaun Thomas. Being an Illinois fan, I have seen him play and know his game pretty well. He is a very good player, but I just don’t think he’s an All-American just yet. He got a lot of opportunities at Ohio State last season because the opposing teams were more concerned with guarding Sullinger, which allowed Thomas to get a lot of looks on offense.
With Sullinger gone, Deshaun Thomas will be the #1 option on offense. This can be both good and bad. This is good because he will be asked to score the ball at an effective rate. This can also prove to be bad because he will get 10x more attention by defenders now that Jared Sullinger is gone.
It’ll be an interesting situation, but I just wouldn’t put Thomas in there just yet.
Now that I think about it a little more, this situation is similar to the one in Orlando last season. Teams would focus so much of their defensive attention on Dwight Howard that Ryan Anderson would always seem to get uncontested looks. Whenever Howard went down with an injured back, Anderson was called upon for offense and couldn’t opperate with much efficiency because he was being heavily guarded, with teams knowing that he was the #2 option behind Dwight.
That’s the way that I see Deshaun Thomas. He’s a good player, and could possibly be a great player. Only time will tell. As of right now, I just don’t see him as an All-American candidate.
