According to Adam Schefter and multiple other reports, China will be starting their first football league in 2015 called the China American Football League (CAFL). Now my question to you guys is, how do you think this league will fair? Do you think it will flame out like NFL Europe? Or do you think it will be successful?

If they pay a decent salary, I could see it working out. I mean, look at the sheer numbers. About 90 guys are trying out, per team, for every American football team. Only 53 of them are going to make it. That’s over a thousand dudes without jobs. The only viable options they have from there are practice squads for said teams but if they want real in game competition, the Candian football league and Arena football are it. And Asians seem to marvel at American sport stars. I would really like to see maybe some Asian guys thrive. The only oriental I’ve ever heard of making it was that linebacker who played for the Cowboys in the 90’s.

He was a beast, one of those undersized linebackers who racked up a lot of tackles.

I think it is kind of weird pushing the NFL on china when they don’t seem to have even a passing interest in it. Basketball is the second most popular sport in the world and people in most countries at least have an idea of what it is, so it makes sense that the NBA is trying to expand its reach, to try to become more like the English premier league with its massive global reach, literally everywhere I went in Kenya people knew about Manchester United and Arsenal, even in somewhat remote villages people would all get together and watch it regardless of what time it was on. The NBA doesn’t have near that reach, but people at least know about it in most places where as the NFL people dont care about if you are outside of the USA and Canada and a few people care about it in England. I dont really see it being worth the investment in China.

great idea. The NFL should try to expand where ever it can. I personally think its scared of the NBA as its dominance is waning. The NBA just sold a 2 billion dollar team, that has to have the NFL teams nervous and salivating at the same time. There is a billion people in China it shouldn’t be hard to find a few million fans.

Not a chance this league goes.  I live in a heavily asian city in Canada and since they have arrived as immigrants, the number of football programs at high schools has gone from 4 to 1.  My high school being the lone high school with a football program left.  Chinese are the majority as per census in my city of 170k.

Sports are not a part of Chinese culture.  If they were, I’m pretty sure they would be in the World Cup every time….same with India sans cricket.  But China don’t have cricket…all they have is ping-pong?

I have seen some games on TV from Japan, nothing from China.  They have the money to spend, probably a bunch of rectangular fields and stadiums that were built for their Olympics that don’t get used, it could be bigger for them than the XFL was for North America.

Ed Yang, I don’t think he’s in the league anymore, but Hines Ward is half Korean and Teddy Bruschi is half Filipino.

Timmy Chang was also a highly decorated NCAA QB for Hawaii a few years back, and bounced around the league as a backup for a few seasons.

Don’t know about the league, but if the Sumo-wrestlers decided to try they would have some HUGE O and D lineman.
