This comes as a surprise to say the least. Everyone kind of assumed this job would go to either tyronn lue or Jason Kidd. Outside of a part-time player development gig with golden state, Nash hasn’t been very active in basketball since retirement a few people would have assumed he would have had much interest in a full-time coaching gig.

Nash is without a doubt a brilliant basketball mind, but that doesn’t always necessarily translate to success as a coach. He has no experience as a head coach or even assistant at any level, and now will be thrown right into a situation where he is expected to lead a championship contender. While his playing career speaks for itself, you kind of have to wonder if he has a forceful enough personality to command respect of the locker room with so many veteran players around. He’s clearly going to need an experienced staff around him to help him learn on the fly.

online i’ve seen alot of people complaining becuz they see this as ”white priviledge’, an inexperienced white guy without any head coaching experience getting the job…when there are several experienced black coached getting overlooked, including nets interim coach jacque vaughn whom the nets have retained as an assistant…..to be fair jason kidd, derek fisher and mark jackson were hired without any previous experience…..

nets gm sean marks has been the gm since 2016 and he has a history of bringing in his friends, former teamates & people whom he has developed relationships…

Steve Nash will have Jacque Vaughn as head assistant and I imagine Vaughn will handle all actual coaching responsibilities while Steve will be in charge of handling KD, Kyrie and the New York Media. Due to his lack of coaching experience, I have no thoughts in terms whether this is a good basketball move or not but this is a great move in terms of taking publicity and attention away from the Knicks. The Nets have a lot of talent and upside if everyone can sacrifice their stats for the good of the team but I feel like they need to make some moves as the players don’t fit super well together. Kyrie, Dinwiddie, LeVert are all ball dominant, score first guards. KD is one of the greatest to ever do it but he’s going to be 32 year old forward coming off an torn achilles. The same injury that essentially ended Kobe’s career. DeAndre Jordan is close to useless in today’s NBA. They def need more 3 point shooting and will try and bring Joe Harris back. I am not making any predictions about this team till I see them play.

I’d look seriously at moving levert this offseason if I were Brooklyn. As much as I like him as a player, he needs the ball in his hands to be effective and will likely be marginalized playing with kyrie and kd. Plus he has a significant injury history. He’s a young player with a relatively favorable contract, coming off a strong bubble performance. His value might not ever be higher than it is now.

I really don’t know about this hire. No coaching experience. Yes Kerr and Rivers have been successful without experience but there’s also Vinny Del Negro, Derek Fisher, Jason Kidd (who isn’t a good coach but still somehow gets considered an ok coach), so I really don’t know. It could be genius or it could blow up in their face. I also feel like the Nets are just doing everything to cater to Irving and Durant. Giving DeAndre Jordan about an 7M per year more than what he’s worth. I’d rather have someone like Aron Baynes tbh. Firing Kenny Atkinson when he was starting Allen over Jordan who is a significantly better player at this point. Giving Michael Beasley and Jamal Crawford deals which (do have some sense but they’re buds with them, but even still)

And Nash has a good relationship with KD from GSW and Irving. I did see the potential white privilege, I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with that and more catering to the Nets Kings KD and Kyrie

I understand why Brooklyn thinks Steve Nash will make a great coach, and why they think his brand of offense meshes well with the Nets’ roster.

But if you want what Steve Nash brings to the team, why not at least wait and see if D’Antoni is available? Or why not maybe hire Alvin Gentry, who followed D’Antoni in Phoenix and achieved similar success? Or what about Jarron Collins, who played with Nash in that system and has spent the last few years as an assistant to Kerr with the Warriors? All these guys know what Nash knows, and have coaching experience. Nash could be their assistant if he wanted.

Also I would absolutely not trade Levert until I see whether Durant is the same player he was, pre-Achilles, and until I see whether Kyrie can play a full NBA season plus playoffs without getting injured. Which means I wouldn’t trade him anytime soon. The Nets need a hedge in case Durant and/or Irving, when they finally take the court again, are only say 80% of what they once were.
