HitsterParticipantI’ve just noticed in the British press that the NBA has agreed to allow teams to have a sponsor’s logo on players’ vests for the 2017/18 season. The size of the logo will be limited to 2.5inches/6cm square apparently.
Shirt sponsorship is a huge revenue stream for European sports teams especially the powerhouse football teams like Real Madrid, Man City, Bayern Munich, Man Utd, Barcelona etc. It now looks as if the NBA will get a part of this market.
I’d imagine that a lot of blue chip US and Worldwide companies will be looking to increase their brand awareness this way. No doubt this is great news for the big market and successful teams who will no doubt receive the best sponsorship deals. This money could effectively be used to offset luxury tax payments for example.
Football teams major shirt deals vary from about $28 million to $75 million per year but this is for a larger logo. Given the smaller logo space the NBA will allow and trying to guess the size of the US markets, I figure that top teams could ask $30 million per season upwards going to maybe $50 million plus for the most popular teams.

ballislyfe25ParticipantSucks it’s coming to this. The NBA, owners, and Adam Silver don’t care about the fans and just want to line their pockets as deeply as they can. This won’t change anything; games will still take 3 hours and commercial breaks will still be way too frequent and all too long.

Hype MachineYeah…honestly I’m all for the logos if it means that they can cut back on the amount of timeouts for Advertisements. But I know it wont come to that.
The level of marketing in American Sports is outrageous. In comparison, Football/Soccer has uninterupted play for 45 straight minutes without advertising. I’ll gladly take logos over ‘TV Timeouts’ in the NBA.

BleedGreen808ParticipantIf they are doing this will it lower ticket prices or are the owners and the NBA doing it to increase profits? When they see the ad money coming in will they end up doing bigger ads like the WNBA and soccer? I remember seeing the Minnesota Lynx with Mayo Clinic in big letters accross the chest instead of Minnesota or Lynx with a small Lynx logo in the top corner.

HitsterParticipantGood point by Ballerway above about sponsors changing and jersey sales. Here in England I will often see football fans walking around in shirts from a few seasons back with previous sponsorship logos on them.
Teams and marketing hope when they change sponsors that fans may buy a new shirt/jersey etc
Bigger teams will get long term lucrative sponsorship deals generally.
In Europe there is less add breaks in sport or on field advertising but bigger kit deals. Also naming rights are only ever done for new build arenas or stadiums which seems in line with how it happens in the US.
One extra point that occured to me is that this year’s FA market maybe has more urgency now. Any team with say KD for example under contract for 2017-18 will be in a stronger position to get the best logo deal they can when negoiations start over the next few months.
