So I made a blog post about top ten teams most likely to go into Tank Mode for the 2014 NBA Draft, with a few tiers thrown in. Here were my top 10.

Tier 1: Already in the tank
    1. Philadelphia
    2. Boston
    3. Phoenix
    4. Charlotte
Tier 2: Basically on the fringe of tanking
    5. Milwaukee
    6. Sacramento
    7. Toronto
Tier 3: One disaster away from using their Tank Card.
    8. Los Angeles Lakers
    9. Dallas Mavericks
    10. Portland Trail Blazers

    Honorable Tier 3s: Atlanta, Minnesota

    For explanations, here’s a link: http://chickennoodlehoop.com/2013/07/01/nba-tankapalooza-power-rankings-1-0/

Was hoping for some discussion and/or disagreements. Wish I could change a couple things but it is what it is lol. Thanks for reading though if you do.

Haha most popular? Not a chance. Actually surprised whenever I post blogs on here and get comments on them. Fun when it happens though.

I doubt Toronto makes any attempts of tanking. I believe they finally make a legit push to the postseason this time. Excellent post, though.

That’s one thing I wish I could change. A lot of moves need to happen if they were to really throw in the towel.

Thanks for the compliment though! Much appreciated and thanks for reading.

Monta Ellis might be addition by subtraction, but they also may lose Redick and Dunleavy via free agency.

Also worth noting, when’s the last time Milwaukee attracted a big name free agent?

Atlanta will be tanking as well, if they don’t get a couple of the top tier FA’s they’re targeting at…

Lakers can’t tank because they don’t have 1st round picks for next draft (do they?)

You can only trade first round picks every other year (might’ve been a rule after Lakers acquired Magic with the #1 pick?), so this year they have their pick. 2015 is top-5 protected, then top-3 in 2016 and ’17, then unprotected in 2018. Kind of like how Brooklyn sent their 2014, 16, and 18 picks to Boston.

That’s all via http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed . Good link for background info every pick a team owes or is owed.

The rule was made in response to Cleveland constantly trading picks in the 70’s for aging veterans, culminating with trading the pick that drafted James Worthy first overall to the reigning champion Lakers. If I’m not mistaken it’s named after the then Cleveland GM.

While you can’t trade two consecutive picks I belief you can make a pick and then trade the right to the player even if you traded the next or previous year’s pick.

I would also like to add Utah. Especially if Al Jefferson and/or Paul Millsap don’t resign with them. They have a better chance at getting a star/franchise player in the draft than they do free agency sad to say.

But with all that young talent, they aren’t going to be bad enough to get a top 5 pick, even top 10 is unlikely.

Utah not signing Jefferson or Milsap isn’t tanking its being smart. With them they aren’t a playoff team and take up a lot of the cap so it makes no sense to resign them

You can bet Toronto is going to tank for a shot at Andrew Wiggins next year if they can’t pick up any good talent in free agency.

They already traded Bargnani for draft picks and veterans, so you can see where this is heading.

Trading Bargnani is more so addition by subtraction.
The team is far better without him due to his inability to play defense plus he disrupts the flow of the offense.

If Dallas doesn’t get Rondo, they should definitely tank. I wouldn’t consider anyone on their roster to be a good young building block. Larkin is nice, but not somebody to build your team around.

    Go Philly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will only sign free agents from the NBDL to ensure we make a run at the team record for losses and get a chance for the Top 3 next year. By that same token I hope the Pelicans load up enough to be mid-late lottery

With a lot of teams looking to tank, we could have a surprise team or two sneaking an 8th play off seeding. I doubt the Lakers would try to tank unless Kobe was likely to miss the vast majority of the season and could Dallas risk wasting a year of Dirk’s NBA shelf life as he is 35 years old now.

Once the FA market really starts moving we’ll know much better who will likely tank next year or more realistically struggle.

Agreed. Pretty much the first half I wrote about. Could Cuban stomach tanking away a season and wasting away the last of Dirk’s prime?

With all the player movement, I expect to be wrong on a couple teams, especially those in the East where it’s wide open in the middle of the standings. The next power rankings I come out with will likely see a couple new teams enter the fold and a couple leave.

Tanking with someone like Dirk on the team could be a dangerous move for he would be a FA in 2014 and however unlikely could jump ship to a genuine contender.

(Average starter age might be 23. And we might save our cap space for next year)
But we are not trying to lose.

They’re kind of, sort of the Orlando Magic of the West if they let go of both Millsap and Jefferson. Lots of young talent with Burke, Burks, Hayward, Kanter, Favors, Carroll (free agent)….probably missing another player somewhere…ah, Gobert!

I’ll admit I’m pretty high on Orlando’s potential yet don’t think about Utah’s all that much. Corbin could’ve played his young guys a little more and I got really excited about Tobias Harris’ breakout performance after being traded.

According to basketball-reference, Greg Ostertag is a $6.3 million cap hit. Anyone know why? I knew he’d have an everlasting presence in the NBA, but not in that way.

nice post. i agree w ya. Philly and Boston are almost in a league of their own when it comes to the tank this year. i also understand why Boston did it, they just were gonna be going anywhere in the near future and KG only has a few years left. PP is also aging quickly. The most surprising thing on draft day for me along with bennett going no. 1 was the sixers trading Holiday. i couldn’t believe they moved him, i woulda thought that guy was no where near the trading block. it blind sided me cuz i never even heard a whisper or rumor of them possibly shopping him. He’s just so young and had a great season, he looks to really be on the upswing. and to trade him for the 6th pick (an injured big man who’s rail thin) a guy who has alot of question marks around him. I think Noel will turn out to be a nice player but i wonder what they coulda got for holiday on a open market. Dude has alot of potential he’s one of the biggest PG’s in the league let alone his vision and ball handling skills. if you woulda told me a month ago the Pelicans were getting Jrue Holiday i woulda thought they traded EG.
