TarHeelRavenParticipantI don’t think there’s any question AI is a hall of famer. He led a very mediocre Sixers team to the NBA finals in 2001. He might be one of the greatest athletes in the history of professional sports. Guy could’ve been a world class sprinter or great NFL player. His attitude was horrific at times and he’s not someone you would want your son looking up to when you want to teach him sportmanship or the fundamentals of the game. His talent was undeniable.

Stop_basketball_nonsenseParticipant1st ballot agreed. In my adult life as a man I know none should be idolized, but when i was around 9-13yrs old I idolized the answer. Yeah his personality was very mercurial but, many people don’t grow up in the circumstances he did, & considering how hard he played every night, with the passion that enthralled so many im proud to have seen his journey, highs& lows, much respect to my favorite baller ever.

HitsterParticipantAI was always going to be a first ballot HOF induction, his eligibility may have been unclear as he played abroad for a year post NBA career.
So of his antics were questionable but he carried Philly for well over a decade and the gap between him and the rest of his team mates talentwise may have been one of the biggest ever on an NBA team. MJ had Pippen, Rodman etc, Kobe had good running mates too.
Also AI was only 6ft 165lbs so was virtually always outsized and would have taken a load of knocks on court. He was once compared to the Energizer Bunny which I always thought was a nice comparison.
Even when he was pushing 33 and had Melo as a running mate he put up over 26ppg in Denver. Sadly the next season his career went off the edge of the cliff when the Detroit trade failed.
AI was not ready to become a bench player then and perhaps his ego got the better of him as I’m sure if he’d accepted a reduced role lots of contenders would have wanted him like how they chased Ray Allen, PP in recent years. Maybe he didn’t want to go onto a powerhouse team where he wasn’t the Alpha dog or even top running mate even if he could have maybe been given a starting role but then in the game played largely with the 2nd unit.

Memphisboy14ParticipantI don’t even understand why this is up for debate. The guy hands down is a FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER. Not only that I think you could say that he’s probably one of the most influential and iconic players of all time in the modern era of basketball. Easily top 5 in the most imitated players of all time. Especially on the playground. Everyone was trying to master that crossover like Allen Iverson. I ended up getting palming violations out the ass as a kid lol.
I think the main thing that screwed him was refusing to accept a lesser role on a team. I think that Allen Iverson still had so much to offer to teams as a 6th man but his ego wouldn’t allow him to do it. Because of this he was forced out of the NBA. He could’ve been a great back up on plenty of championship contenders. It’s really sad since in my opinion he really didn’t have anything left to prove in his career. All he had to do was get that last piece of hardware to really solidify his legacy. Extremely disappointed in how his career in ended.
Before anyone says I’m overly critical please know that Allen Iverson is probably my favorite player ever.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantMemphisBoy, Iverson’s place in the Hall was never up for the debate..The question as Hitster mentioned was what year would he be eligible 2016 or 2017 (the same year Shaq is eligible).
He last played for the 76’ers in 09-10 season. In 2010-11 he spent spent time in Turkey where he played 11 games..The Committee felt those 11 games on another continent wasnt a reason to not make him eligible.
Last week Mutombo thanked former 76’ers coach Larry Brown for allowing him to play with AI..Mutombo said Iverson would soon take his place in the Hall.. .It appears that Mutombo’s former 76’ers teammate will be joining him next year..
_
2 other top level talents players whose careers were slowed by injuries will also be on the ballot Chris Webber & Penny Hardaway…
2 or more of these former players might finally get in:
Marques Johnson-5 time all star..was named all nba 1st team once..all nba 2nd team twice…ncaa player of the year..won national title..kind of surprise its taken him this long to get in..Johnson was 1 of the premiere small forwards for over a decade…
Sidney Moncrief-1 of the best defensive guards to ever play…In 1986 nba players voted him as the league’s best player..Remember that was during the time when Bird,Magic,Jordan,Olajuwon,Barkley among others were at their peak…
Tom Chambers-The only non active member of the 20,000 points club not in the hall..
Mark Price
Toni Kukoc
Kevin Johnson
Shawn Kemp
George McGinnis
Ruby Tomjanovich
Walter Davis
Maurice Cheeks
Buck Williams
Paul Westphal
Tim Hardaway

Memphisboy14ParticipantMy fault. I wasn’t trying to say that the OP was asking whether or not he should be in. I just put that in there for no reason really. But thanks……

DirkChampParticipantIverson was a scoring machine and sure, there were a million bad shots he took but lets be honest who could match him. He never really had a team around him until 2001 and even than they built that team on defense so he could just run a muck in the league. Iverson is my all time favorite player, I have every teams jersey he’s been on and all of his shoes still. With 4 scoring titles and an MVP, he’s in because it would be a crime not to.
