Right now I am very curious about professional athletes and their diet/nutrition because in today’s era the athletes are physically bigger than they were 10-15+ years ago. I’m very aware that a lot of the star players have personal chefs, trainers etc. to help them focus on staying healthy and fit.

The more intriguing question I have is are there any active NBA players that are on strict vegan/vegetarian diets?

I really would like to find out so I can pay closer attention to how they train in workouts and see how it translates to them performing at a high level in an 82 game season. Also I am more interested in seeing how consistent they have kept their weight throughout their career which is most important to me.

I would be very surprised to see any NBA player who adheres to a vegan diet, the amount of calories and protein needs for athletes of that caliber would make a restrictive diet very hard to properly execute while staying healthy. I’m not saying it is impossible, just that it would be surprising.

It’s very possible because Houston Texans RB Arian Foster announced his transition to the vegan diet some time last year. I will be monitoring his progression as far as performance and staying at a consistent weight measurement as his career goes on. If a NFL player who takes more abuse on the body which has to be in better physical shape than a NBA player, I’m quite sure there will be a few to try it sooner or later.

don’t bet everything on arian foster though. he’s a veteran running back, maybe the most physically punished position in football who has already been injured. on top of that, sounds crazy, but it takes about a full year to transition your body to getting adjusted to being vegan.

The paleo/primal diet is very popular for athletes. It takes out all processed foods, dairy, refined sugars, and legumes. Primal is a less strict version of paleo, but a lot of athletes do it to add in starchy vegetables and brown rice. Some athletes on it or some version of it  are Ray Allen, Blake Griffin, Kobe Bryant, and Louis Scola.

I’m familiar with hearing the paleo word thrown out there because my sister is on it, but I’ve never did any research myself to fully understand what it consists of. All I see is the food she posts on Facebook, I actually thought her pancake was a breakfast sausage.

I doubt any of the younger guys eat super healthy as they are still young and their metabolism probably burns off any extra fat not needed.

If I had to bet money on any guy that eats very healthy in the NBA,Derek Fisher would be my guy, dude is old and still has one of if not the best body in the league.

I doubt there are many of them in the NBA but gaining weight and power is definetly not the concern there. Some of the worlds strongest athletes are even vegan. The world lifting champions and some other top tier power athletes like olympics in track and field only eat meatfree.
