The reason why I think Detroit signed Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva is because Joe Dumars realized that his nucleus of Billups, Hamilton, Prince, Sheed and Dyess were on their last legs. He let Chauncey go first because a chance presented itself for Chauncey to go back home to the city of Denver so Joe made a bold move by trading him for the expiring of Iverson. He didn’t trade Hamilton and Prince right then and there to because he wanted his players to be happy when they were traded so he decided to wait. Iverson and Sheed’s contracts expired at the end of the season and Detroit were looking at players that potentially become the next Hamilton, Prince, Sheed and Dyess. Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva were looked at closely and it came to a conclusion to sign them because they would eventually become the next Hamilton and Sheed. Ben averaged 20,3,3 throughout the season and Charlie averaged 16,6 and connected on 89 threes. Basically what I’m trying to say is that the reason why Detriot signed these 2 because they’ll eventually be the next Hamilton and Sheed. It’ only a matter of time before Hamilton gets traded. As for Prince, there’s a reason why Detroit drafted all those forwards they did in Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers, Jonas Jerebko and Deron Washington. One of those guys will fill in the role of Prince once he gets traded. Joe Dumars gave Hamilton that extension because he wanted him happy after he had traded Billups remember. A ton of teams would be interested in Hamilton with or without that extension because he’s solid but he’s getting old. As for the defence thing, with the coaching staff they have and with guys like Hamilton, Prince and Big Ben to mentor Gordon and Villanueva, they’ll learn soon enough.

my only problem with your theory and what the pistons did is that they gave Hamilton the big extension late last season for i believe 3 years and 33 million. And then they brought in Gordon who is essentially a very similar player. I don’t see rip and Gordon playing that well together. If they were trying to replace rip with Gordon like you are suggesting, then why not just let rip go and use that money on a big man who can give them a better post presence?

Okay… I still think Dumars is losing it. He overpaid Ben Gordon significantly. I like Charlie V, but he’s as soft as toilet tissue.

I agree with you tezo83 I think they really overpaid gordon they were bidding against themselves and they gave him like 50 million he is an undersized sg he is good but all he does is shoot he hits big shots but thats about all youre getting form him as for charlie v he is soft he has some good games but he is vastly inconsistent and he doesnt play any D.

agreed tezo. Gordon and charlie are both allergic to defense and are not very tough. They are also both incredibly inconsistent. When they locked in on those two guys to spend all their money, I was thinking Joe D was slipping too.

I thought for sure rip signed it after chauncey was traded. I remeber Dumars saying they gave the extension to rip because he was unhappy about them bringing in Iverson and so dumars used the extension as a way to prove to rip that they were still committed to him.

Your 100 percent right. I heard the exact same thing too. Rip was angry at the move because Iverson is no playmaker and Chauncey was a close friend of his so the extension was to keep him happy and commited to winning. Teams will still be interested in Hamilton with the extension and the right deal will present itself eventually. Joe Dumars said himself.

I thing missing from this convo. I know for a FACT this won’t work , what happened when they brought in the last player who was supposed to take Rips starting role? He(A.I.) was murdered in Detroit, and Rip was a little bitch about coming off the bench, what makes you think he would comeoff the bench now, when they can’t even contend anymore

Gordon’s coming of the bench for now until Dumars can find the right trade for Hamilton and get players and/or picks in return.

Here’s the thing about this scenario… People thought they are going to be major players via free agency 2010 but when they signed these two players, they just bade goodbye to that golden class… Signing BG and Charlie V is quite puzzling on my opinion because 1st, why do they need scorers whereas Rip, Stuckey and Tayshaun can provide it for them… 2nd, instead of going for a pass-first PG like an Andre Miller, they decided to go with Ben Gordon, a one-dimensional player who does nothing but shoot, shoot and shoot… Even when he’s off, he’s still stubborn and keep on shooting which could probably frustrate other players who want the ball AKA Rip and Stuckey. By the way, Stuckey maybe a PG but he’s no pass-first type. The Charlie V signing was quite understandable since they only have uhmmmm… Kwame… and… Big Ben at the post so kudos for the Pistons on that but the thing there is that, he’s as soft as tissue just like tezo said… So… It’s going to be an interesting output for the Pistons but one thing is for sure, they are no championship contenders.

Detroit can be players in 2010 if they can trade Rip and Tayshaun for expirings and/or picks which is think is possible. That would be at least 23 mill off of their books and they could use that money to sign a max player so it’s possible.

yeah, but everybody is looking to save money for next year and right now, espeially with the way the economy is effecting basketball, I don’t think too many teams are gonna be interested in taking on either rips or prince’s contracts.

Hamiliton to Utah for Boozer maybe. I know that trade has holes but it is a nice thought and would give Detroit a legit front court and give Deron Williams a vet sg to team up with in the backcourt. I dont see too many team that would take Hamilton right now Maybe Bobcats.

The whole thing is a mess. All Detroit did was overpay two role players instead of waiting things out for the big show in 2010. Signing Gordon and keeping Hamilton is basically like still having Iverson around. I actually liked their 3 draft picks other than the fact that they all play the same position. I have to assume that Hamilton and Prince are on their way out, but I’m not sure if they will get an expiring contract in return for either or both guys. I do like the idea of Boozer for Hamilton though to a degree. It gives both teams something they can use, but it probably make Detroit even softer because that puts Charlie V at the 3 or 5 spot though they get capspace and that gives Utah a shooter and moves (Brewer to the bench).

Daye=6’11 athlete with Rashard Lewis range
Detroit has looked good in preseason. Summers + Daye= 2 steals in one draft
    that’s tough to find
but their will be some times that they cannot get defensive stops in the post

day hasnt shown to be that yet…he hasnt played a regular season game yet and hes behind prince and summers in the depth chart..gordan is no worst on defense then alot of guys in the leauge and hes more consistant then most guys esspecially when playoff time comes. hes the reason chicago even had a chance. now charlie v on the other hand is inconsitant but maybe now that he knows a team will stick with him for awhole season he might perform better

is don’t leave the 6’11 dude open lol
No 2 players are alike (Rashard was clutch in the playoffs last year IMO)
      I’m just saying
he’s tall skinny and has NBA 3 pt range
He’s from the OC so I guess I’m biased

dont leave anyone who can shoot open. his main concern should be getting playing time this year

Summers and Daye will play together I think Daye is a better prospect than Villanueva as far as upside goes
especially given Villanueva’s total lack of defense

I don’t know what to make of Dumars. He built a quality team in Detroit in the early 2000’s and now he re-signs Rip, signs Gordon and drafts 3 small forwards. Maybe he’s a genius with a plan but I can’t figure it out. Detroit is a mess emphasised by the fact that Kwame Brown will probably start at center…..good luck.
