The highlight clips of those Marcus Smart and Julius Randle dunks showed me a lot. Both guys look like great prospects. I especially like big men who can throw it down. Randle seems like a guy with great blend of size, strength, and athleticism. From what I have seen from some highlights he also has some toughness and is not afraid to mix it up.

This site compares Julius Randle to Chris Webber. I see some of that there, but to me, Chris Webber was more fluid, and looked a bit longer and leaner. C Web was more of a natural ball handler and passer too. Probably a quicker jumper too and more of a pure athlete. I now think that Chris Webber was the original ‘power point’ and his game had a lot of similarities to LeBron James, with James obviously being a cut above in most every category (except for rebounding).

There are some Julius Randle comparisons to Amare which I don’t totally get. Amare is more of a freakish athlete who can get away with playing some center due to his freaking hops and length. I think Randle is more of a power forward. I think Randle would struggle at the 5.

Talent wise, I think Randle can be an all-star like Webber or Amare even though I am not in 100% in agreement with those comparisons.

I think a better comparison for Randle is a more athletic Zach Randolph with better passing skills. Randle has some similarities: his strength and girth reminds me of Z Bo, as does his toughness and old school skills inside. Randle shows a quick release from inside similar to Randolph. Z Bo has a good touch and knows his way around the basket which is similar to Julius Randle (from what I have seen). Zach is also not afraid to take jumpers, especially from mid-range. I can see this from Randle’s highlights too. Randle has better athleticism and hops than Z Bo, but Randle is not in that Amare or Blake Griffin category. Randle though can finish strong (like Randolph) but also throw down some fancy dunks (unlike Z Bo). Randle’s size and length is also similar to Zach Randolph as is his stocky build. Randle goes about 6’9 with a wingspan closer to 6’10 than 7 feet tall. I think Randle gets off the floor a little bit better than Zach but Randle’s explosion is probably just above average for athletic big men. Zach Randolph struggles against longer and taller bigs, and I can see the same downside with Randle.

Randle looks like a much better ball handler than Zach which is a big positive. Randle also has better passing skills. Zach Randolph can also pass pretty well, but mainly just to other bigs like Marc Gasol. Z Bo can make the interior pass, but it looks like Randle is a more willing passer with more passing creativity. In that respect Randle has Webber-like passing skills and handles. Randle, though, does not look as fluid as Webber as Webber was one of the best all-around power forwards in league history. Randle is also closer to Zach Randolph in terms of build than Chris Webber, a guy who had a body built for basketball. Webber was a guy you could run the offense through. Randle is not that, even though he looks like he has solid NBA passing potential.

I think the comparison of Julius Randle to a more athletic Zach Randolph is a good one. Z Bo put up 20 and 10 consistently for years and he has made the all-star team a couple of times. Zach Randolph was also one of the 3 or 4 best players in the 2011 playoffs. So, Julius Randle should be flattered by this comparison. Randle even has better handles and athleticism so his upside could even be a bit higher than Z Bo’s.

First, Chris Webber was an unbelievable athlete with maybe the greatest Hands ever. Blake is sort of athletic as he could be an worldclass track and field, Webber had this Explosion that was unreal, combined with his Passing ability he had all the Tools to be the greatest power Forward ever. On the other Hand he lacked the urgency, the fire and self discipline to realize his potential. His Shooting touch stayed abysmal and he was never solid in the clutch. I see no comparison at all with Webber, as for Randolph, no similarities whatsoever.

So who is Julius Randle as a Player? He is a baller, very good handle for a big man, above-average shooter for a big, super Hands, great insticts, not that Long or explosive but he is unbelievable coordinated, hand-eye or footwork. He could easily be a top 10 Player in the league but I have some doubts. Such doubts I do not have at all looking at Jabari Parker. Larry Brown told some months ago how he recruited a guy he thought could be an alltime big in the NBA, an once in a decade type. He explained this Player he should stop playing like a guard and concentrate being an inside guy. This guy decided then he wanted no part with LB whatsover, he didnt even want to listen to advice. Randle could being out of shape quickly and losing his Focus confronting adversity or he could become an 15-year Allstar. So what is his comparison? I really dont know.

I watched Julius Randle’s highlight tapes. I see the size and physique comparison to Z Bo. Plus the quick release, the inside touch, mid-range jumper, and some other things that compare favorably to Z Bo. I also said that Randle is closer to a MORE ATHLETIC Z Bo (with better passing skills) than a guy like Chris Webber (a first rate athlete and an even better passer, more of a power point) or Amare (better athlete than Randle with a much different body type).

Here is a you tube clip of Z Bo dunking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybM4U8ylv8g

Z Bo is not the best nor most prolific dunker ever but he can dunk. Plus, Z Bo is 30 and Randle is going to be a college freshman, so OF COURSE Randle should be dunking really well right now.

I compared Randle to Z Bo because I needed to think of a 6’9 power forward beast with a good shooting touch to compare him too. If you want to say that Randle is somewhere between Webber (could run the offense and even play some 5) and Z Bo (a typical low post power forward with mediocre defense) then I would agree with you.

You take Z-Bo and make him more athletic with better passing and you pretty much get a whole different player. Julius Randle’s is also said to be more parameter oriented than he should be which doesn’t sound like Z-Bo AT ALL. Sorry but I think you might be alone on this one.

Z-Bo is much more physically imposing on the block than Randal while Randal is more perimeter oriented.

Randle reminds me of the player Michael Beasley should have been. The biggest difference I see is randle is a lefty and has far more desire to be great and work ethic. Also Beasley is a little more athletic. They are both guys in pf body’s who prefer to play like sf.

Z Bo is a beast inside but sometimes he falls in love with his jumper. And, unfortunately, his mid range to long range jumper pretty much left him last year. Hopefully he gets his shot back. Randolph is actually a solid passer but he is a better interior passer (mainly to Marc Gasol) than anything. He is not a great big man passer like Magic or LeBron or Webber.

I just hold Webber up on a pedestal as one of the top handful of college players in the past 20 or so years. What a freak. His game was so multi-dimensional and he combined finesse, power, athleticism and a high basketball IQ. Closest thing to LeBron James that we have seen in college.

Here are some college highlights of Chris Webber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ9S-DjBrgo

If Julius Randle can do this at Kentucky then I would STRONGLY consider taking him number one. If not, he would be one of the better 2nd or 3rd picks in NBA history.

I am a fan of great college players and great college teams so I am rooting for Kentucky next year (Memphis being my favorite team though). I would really like to see him matchup against Mitch McGary who I think is as good a power forward you can find in terms of basketball IQ, size, and all-around skill level. If Randle can dominate McGary then Julius Randle has lots and lots of upside and should be considered as top pick caliber.

Saying Randle is a more athletic version of Z-Bo is like saying Rajon Rondo is just a more athletic version of Andre Miller.

    It’s rather pointless.

HOW MUCH more athletic can completely change who they are as a player in both effectiveness and playstyle.

Can we stop with the "Player A is a more ______ version of Player B" comparisons?

    Thanks

I hate when people make comparisons simply based off of highlight tapes. How many times will people understand that highlight tapes only show dunks and blocks? They don’t show them playing off-ball defense, help-side defense, on ball defense, handling the rock, setting screens, getting open, knocking down spot-up jumpers, rebounds, assists… etc. etc.

I am not afraid to compare young guys to all-time greats. I have recently compared Victor Oladipo to David Thompson, Andrew Wiggins to Dr. J, and even Nerlens Noel to Bill Russell in some respects.

I think that a more athletic Z Bo would be one heck of a player. Even the relatively un-athletic Z Bo has put up 20 and 10 many times in his career and has gone to two all-star games. Z Bo is also a solid, if not above average passer for a power forward, which is different that Chris Webber who was an ELITE passer as a big man.

I am watching a documentary on Youtube about Len Bias and that guy was a beast. A straight up machine inside and on the boards. Really good athlete with a nice shooting touch.

    link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8Q0k6VVfOc

If you want to compare Julius Randle to a great college player then this might be a better comparison. Not that I ever fortunate enough o watch Len Bias play, or anything but he looked like a guy that really put his mark on the college game. Coincidentally he rivaled an incredible wing player named Michael Jordan (both were mentioned as being on the same level), and Bias was also a number two pick in the draft.

I am a really big fan of Randle. I think he has some bust potential but I doubt it. I’m not sure why we need to compare him to one player. He has some similarities to Z Bo and to Webber and even a little Amare. Maybe it is because they are similar size and lefties but I kind of feel Randle could be what Derrick Coleman could have been. Now I’m not old enough to remember DC in college but I remember he was a good player in the NbA but never lived up to his potential.
