In a some what surprising move..Memphis sent combo guard Jerryd Bayless to Boston for 6’5 shooting gaurd Courtney Lee……Bayless had some memorable moments with the Grizzlies, but the new coaching staff felt he was too scoring minded to be the backup point guard …And too small and inefficient shooting the ball this season to be the backup shooting guard…….So far this season Bayless is shooting 37.7% fg…. _ While Lee is shooting 49.9%fg….Image Hosted by UploadHouse.com Memphis also waived Seth Curry..But there are reports he might be signed to two 10 day contracts later this week…. How Courtney Lee Impacts the Memphis Grizzlies http://sbn.to/JYipJd via @sbnGrizzlies

Sweet, Bayless is one of my favourite players and I’m glad he’ll get a chance under Stevens.

It’s no shame in that if someone did feel that way.  Players develop at different rates.  Bayless was a highly skilled and touted HSer and was good college player.  Meanwhile West was virtual unknown and had a good run at PG when Collison went down.   West was higher risk but also higher reward due to his elite athleticism…..which I am sure is the main reason Seattle picked him.

Funny Thing is the Thunder actually were involved in this trade too. Haven’t found this out until now but Presti somehow managed to flip Ryan Gomes who played a total of 5 games for OKC into two 2nd rounders. The Sixers pick this year year is a very nice one and Presti really got this for nothing! WOW

Thunder Acquires Two Second-Round Draft Picks

OKLAHOMA CITY, January 7, 2014 – The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired a pair of conditional second-round draft picks from the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a three-team deal, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti. Included in the trade, the Thunder sent forward Ryan Gomes to the Boston Celtics and cash considerations to the Grizzlies.

Oklahoma City acquired the 2014 Philadelphia 76ers’ second-round pick (conditional), which was owned by the Grizzlies. Additionally, the Thunder acquired the Grizzlies’ 2017 second-round draft selection (conditional).

As part of the three-team trade, the Grizzlies acquired guard Courtney Lee and a 2016 second-round draft pick from the Celtics in exchange for guard Jerryd Bayless.

He signed a long term deal similar to the long deal Courtney Lee signed, about 5 million a year. They are very similar but Lee is and has been the better shooter. The media mentions all the time the impact Randolph and Allen has on the city of Memphis and the soul of that team, I wonder if both of those guys may be gone soon.

They have always coveted Lee for some reason and am surprised they were not involved here.  I have no clue what they are doing.  I hope they do.

Yes !! Lee and Crawford are the two guys that were winning games for us. Hopefully, Crawford gets moved as well. Tanking zucks, but I dont see any other way for them to get better. Rondo is coming of a major injury, Green is a good player who is third option at best, and he is 28yrs old. The Avery Bradley hype has died down and he is a defensive dog with a good jump shot. Not some future all star nor can he ever play PG full time. This team needs to at least crack the top ten in the draft.

Some of the projected team in the lottery have some major talent already like the Kings, 76er and even the Jazz. The teams that really need to make it out in the draft imo is Bucks, Hawks, Suns and Celtics.

The Hawks don’t have really young talent, but they have Al Horford, Jeff Teague, and Paul Milsap. The Suns have Eric Bledsoe (although he’s a restricted free agent at years end), Goran Dragic, and Miles Plumlee who’s doing better than I ever imagined. The Bucks and the Celtics need lottery luck though as you mentioned.

If it’s really just Lee for Bayless, strait-up, than this is an absolute killer move for both teams. Not a total game changer, but a move that matters never the less. Heres why:

    Celtics

Lee’s signed through 2015-16 with a salary that will be around $5.5 million. Trading him for Bayless’ shorter contract allows the Celtics to commit more towards the future, and get rid of another one of their bad contracts. Lee is a good player, but he just wasn’t getting the minutes to warrent that type of money. Celtics signed Lee when they were trying to retool, now they’re trying to rebuild.

Aquiring Bayless also gives the Celtics another primary ball handler. Crawford has been awesome this year, but teams are really starting to focus on him now, and he just isn’t producing the way he was at the begining of the year. Adding a player like Bayless will really lesson the load on both Crawford and Pressey.

    Grizzelies

Anyone who has watched the Grizz this year know just how badly they needed someone like Lee. So many times a possesion has been thrown away because of a player like Tony Allen or James Johnson take a mid range jumpshot or three. TA is averaging the most shot attempts in his career, and is shooting more threes than he ever has as well. Adding a shooter like Lee will help spread the floor for the other playes, and his defense will be a great asset as well.

This also lets the Grizz see what they have now in Nick Calathis. He was very good in college, and played overseas for a while, so maybe he’s made that jump that a lot of maturing players have. He’s a 6’6 PG who moves the rock, and he will now have 2/3 of a season to prove that he belongs in the NBA.

Overall I think both teams got what they wanted. Lee is a veteran who’s been on championship caliber teams, and he’ll improve Memphis with his shooting and defense. Celtics get to clear cap space, and gain another ball handler. Good move by both teams, and I’m glad I don’t have to watch Bayless torch my Celtics any more (Celtics being the team he usually lights up the most, and statistically is the third team he scores the most on)

Lee had 2 years left on his deal and Bayless is done after this season. I was high on Bayless and he has been disappointing thus far. Hopefully he will find his game.

last year. Rumor had it that it was serious stuff. Rondo seems like the type of guy that holds a grudge forever and Lee could never be described as a push over.

The thing that got them to select him was Rondo’s defense and able to score without needing a jumper.   Westbrook was touted as a defensive minded player after doing well in college versus Bayless and Mayo.   I personally thought they should have picked Bayless at the time, but man was Westbrook better than I could have imagined.  LOL…  Bayless biggest issue was going to the Blazers where they were already set with Brandon Roy.  Roy was able to do PG duties and McMillian never really played rookie PG’s for real.   He did it with Telfair too.   Which I think will destroy some guys games (especially if they were the man before).   He would take em out and not allow them to play through their mistakes…   Which enabled Westbrook to grow as a player (remember his TO rate was pretty high).  Bayless nor Telfair lived up to what they should have been.  Which is unfortunate, I really loved their games.
