Source: Only Dallas Can Keep Carmelo From Going To Knicks

Carmelo Anthony is open to signing an extension with the Mavericks, according to a source.

Dallas has a roster already capable of winning a title, but they have a need at small forward.

"The only way Melo doesn’t come to New York is if [Mark] Cuban makes a play," that source said.

Roddy Beaubois is the main player of interest Dallas could use in a major trade, but he is close to untouchable.

A source with knowledge of the Mavericks’ thinking said he’d "be shocked if [Carmelo] came" to Dallas, but did say Cuban is unpredictable.

It would be pointless for Denver to acquire him, there future lies with Lawson once Billups hangs it up.

Melo wants the extension now, and the Knicks seem to think that they’ll be able to get him for cheaper in free agency. CAA hasn’t handled this situation well. They have either overplayed their hand, or been fooled by how dumb the Knicks are as a .500 team thinking they don’t need another star.

Dallas would be the perfect fit alongside Dirk, Kidd, Marion, and Chandler. That would be a core that could battle the Lakers for the next three or four years in the West. The Mavericks have expiring deals with Butler and Stevenson, they possess their first round pick, and have a few good young players in Beaubois, Jones, and Calathes.

Catch-22 for Melo because like you said the Knicks think they will get him regardless whether it’s for cheap via Free Agency.

    Nick Calathes?

Anyway, Dallas would be a interesting team with Melo, but I don’t see him going there. I think he’s going to be a Knick

Calathes is would be a senior at Florida, but chose to take a multi-million dollar three year deal with Panathinaikos. He is still a valuable asset of the Mavericks, and will be able to come back in the summer of 2012.

How? He wasn’t a 1st round pick (or projection) coming out of Florida when he did, nor was he that good. Plus, looking at his numbers, he seems average overseas.

Calathes would get worked in the NBA by the likes of Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, Paul, Willaims, etc.

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but I think that even with Melo, the Mavericks window to win a championship over the next couple years is very slim.  They would be giving away their best young talent in order to land him  in Beaubois and their core group of guys are on the downswing of their careers.  Kidd doesn’t have a whole lot left in the tank and Dirk, Marion and Terry are all over 32.  I think that this would be the year for them to have the best chance to win a title.

What are you talking about? He was well regarded as a possible if not probable first round pick until he signed the three year deal. His numbers seem very average to you? Have you seen the numbers of top draft prospects and top recent picks on elite clubs? He is right in line with them. It is a different game. If you don’t look at it that way, then you end up thinking Brandon Jennings stunk and Ricky Rubio is going to be a bust.

I remember being a fringe first round pick in 2009. I remember him, Jodie Meeks, Jeff Pendergraph, Patty Mills and the Gonzaga big as first round bubble guys. As for the numbers:

Those aren’t good nubmers from what I’m looking at in Euroleague, but he’s picked it up slightly in Greece. I just dobut someone is saying "Man, we HAVE to get Nick Calathes from Dallas"

If the "Man, we HAVE to get Player from Team Y" is your gauge then there are thirty players with trade value in the world. Dallas has assets and Calathes is one of them. Teams do a little bit more homework than you do. I’m pretty sure you were one of the many Knick fans who thought taking Landry Fields when Lance Stephenson was available was stupid. You probably were also unaware Gary Neal could play.

Calathes is a 6’6" point guard on one of the best clubs in Europe who can do a little bit of everything, and having a big point guard is a huge asset because it allows for the possibility of having an undersized 2 without any sort of sacrifices. This was a guy who was 17-6-5 as a sophomore. If he stayed, there would be no doubts about his NBA ability. He chose the money, the better coaching, and the better competition. Just because you haven’t seen him, it doesn’t mean he isn’t good.

For one, that’s not gauging one’s talent. I never said that. Your making him sound as if he’s gonna be a make or break piece to a deal. He’s most likely not. I admit, I didn’t know much about Landry Fields. All I knew was he did a workout with New York and STOPPED all workouts. I thought he was gonna be someone NY looks for as a undrafted player. I wasn’t mad because of NY passing Lance more of being mad they passed Devin Ebanks because I think Ebanks has a good future in the NBA.

I’m not questioning Nick’s ability in college, I just don’t feel his NBA value is as high as you think. Also, yes he averaged 17-5-6 as a sophomore. But:

    A) They were a N.I.T team

    B) He was the only good player on the roster

    C) How many guys have we seen in history put up good numbers in college and fail in the pros.

AGAIN, not saying he can’t be a good NBA player, but he’s not a make or break in ANY big deal IMO

I said no such thing about Calathes being a make or break piece. I said the Mavs have expiring contracts, their first round pick, and three talented young players in Beaubois, Jones, and Calathes. He is an asset and he has value to the Mavericks either as someone who can come over in 2012 or in a trade. That is it. You and bluelaces wanted to dismiss him as a nobody, and that is just not the case.

Eh, didn’t dismiss him as a nobody, just don’t think someone is saying we have him back in a deal. Last time I checked, when teams make trades for stars, they want young players back correct? I don’t think any team in the NBA is like "Man, we gotta get Nick Calathes" compared to Roddy B and Jones, which I think both have solid NBA value.

Missing the point. Never said Calathes didn’t have talent nor am I "dismissing" him. All I said was he doesn’t have the value you think he has. As for the Jones-Calathes thing, gotta show it to me in the pros. Jones has at least shown me a couple things when I saw him play. I think Jones is a solid bench player with time, needs to develop his jumpshot a bit more to become a better shooter off picks.

Not dismissing Euroleagues either, but we seen Euro guards come over to the NBA and do nothing. Calathes has US experience as well, but not the NBA experience.

In those 135 minutes over four months in the NBA? As opposed to the two years Calathes has been making more than $1 million in Greece, but that is not the pros is it. Those garbage time minutes Jones has gotten is what Calathes is missing.

      BothTeamsPlayedHard,

Would you mind taking a look at my proposed Melo to Dallas deal? I just made the argument that the Mavs are his best potential fit in a different thread too if you wanna check it out. Keep in mind Denver is getting 1-2 1sts from Dallas, one from Orland and one from Atlanta. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4j4v7h6

      Knicks Fans,

Can you tell me how you’re going to sign Chris Paul in a post-lockout CBA with Melo and Amare already taking max deals, assuming Melo gets his $65M? Seems to me the only way he goes there is if Melo stays in Denver and they both come together in 2012 for dirt cheap

Again, I said when he has played. Like I said before, guards from overseas has come over here and struggled in the past and I never said it wasn’t a pro league.

Still doesn’t mean he has NBA value to what the previous 2 guys you named have. If you wanna go off that, Patrick Beverley should be worth something, what about Terrance Oglesby? He’s been overseas for 2 years and his numbers aren’t bad. Just because he went overseas and he’s putting up worse numbers, I’m supposed to feel as if he’s a great trade piece?

I never thought one they were getting Paul-Melo and Amare. I always thought 2 of the 3. However, with the contracts being rolled back ( in terms of contract numbers for free agents after the new labor deal) The Knicks would have Gallo (3-4 mil) and Felton (7-9 mil) expiring that offseason, Paul can sign for a cheap deal under that new agreement.

Again, don’t think it happens, but that’s how it would happen

I don’t think there is any way Orlando would want to take on the Haywood deal. I have to believe there is a team in the league that would (I just think he ran into an awful situation with Chandler being a much better fit in Dallas), but that is a ton of money now and going forward to play ten to fifteen minutes as a backup to Dwight Howard.

The Duhon deal is also tough. Atlanta has handed out big money to Johnson, Smith, Horford, Williams, and Bibby. They aren’t going to want a $3+ million backup point guard for the next four years on top of that.

As far as Atlanta is concerned Ken Berger at CBS reported yesterday that they are willing to take on a bit of salary for a quality backup pg. He says they are already looking at Sessions who had a sick game tonight leading his team over the Lakers after that news dropped .

Orlando does already have a ton committed what with Gilbert and his contract, but they did sign Gortat for the same amount that Haywood’s making for that role so it’s tough to believe that would be an issue. They’re also dumping Duhon and Q-Rich who combined are making just 1mil less than Haywood. In doing this trade Orlando is basically committing an extra 1-2mil to the cap for the next 4 seasons before getting left with Haywood and a 1 year expiring 10mil contract plus a team option that likely won’t be picked up. Seems plausable to me. If I’m Mark Cuban I’m calling Otis Smith on Orlando and asking him if he wants to dump the 5.9mil sitting on his bench out of the rotation for a proven backup center to ease the load on Dwight.

I didn’t disregard Calathes as an NBA player.  But if you are trading your superstar player, you better be getting a young guy in return with superstar potential (like Derrick Favors when the Nets speculation was swirling around).  Beaubois is the only piece with the potential to become very good.  If Calathes ever comes over, he is going to be nothing but a career backup, not a very good asset to me.  Also, Dallas owns their first round pick, but its going to be one of the last in the first round, not very attractive to Denver.  I think that if Dallas has any shot at getting Melo, a third team is going to have to be involved.

as a Mavs fan I think the only way to make such a deal is that Denver gets desperate to move him instead of getting nothing and I don’t think they are,It seems they will try to keep him until he signs to another team as a FA
