Mr. ChicagoParticipantMarquis Teague’s NBA future in doubt?
December, 26, 2013 By Joe Kaiser | ESPN.comFormer first-round pick Marquis Teague was sent to the D-League today by the Chicago Bulls, which is hardly a surprise given how seldom he’s played and how ineffective he’s been since Derrick Rose was lost for the season. Is the NBA career of this 2012 draft pick already running out of time?
Teague’s rookie contract is guaranteed through next season, when he is set to earn just over $1.12 million, but he’s going to have to regain his confidence and show more — much more — in order to stick in the league beyond that. What he can’t continue to be is a point guard who shoots 24.2 percent from the field and rarely gets his teammates involved, as has been the case all season long. He’s also going to have to show that he can improve, after regressing from year one to year two.The most important thing for Teague will be finding his niche, and becoming the best he can be at whatever it is. The D-League could serve as the perfect grounds to accomplish that. And the good news is Teague’s still only 20, so there’s time for him to improve.
Until that happens, though, it’s difficult to envision him having a spot in this league.
He has been really struggling this year; I hope this can help him in anyway.

LindseyParticipantAlways thought this dude would be way better than his brother. I was caught up in the mixtape hype I guess. Doesnt look like an NBA level athlete at all, and I fel that is what he was sold on coming in to college and the draft. Too bad.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantEven if you watch the mix tapes, he doesnt look like that great of an athlete. Teague isnt a bad athlete, in fact he is a slightly above average, but his buzz coming into the league was all about how elite of an athlete he was. When he tries to Iso, in college, in highschool and indeed in the NBA, he has no first step. If you watch the mixtapes coming out of highschool, he gets by guys simply because they are inferior athletes, but he has such a slow first step off any cross over move. He doesnt have any explosion off the dribble, unlike his brother. Another issue is his spin move. He doesnt spin fast enough, in comparison to guys like John Wall and Derrick Rose, elite athletes, when they spin, they do a full 360 revolution in their two steps, but Marquis just isn’t a good change of direction, spin or explosion athlete so he only ends up going around 3/4’s of a spin making him stutter on the next dribble or cause him to take an off balanced shot if he is going up for a layup. He has a pretty damn good vertical, but his overall athleticism in terms of quickness, change of direction, first step and ability to spin, is incredibly lacking which is a main reason he hasnt had the same success in the NBA that he has had in highschool, college or even the Summer League, because the defenders he comes up against are just on average better athletes then his prior competition.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI agree with Lindsey…..I got caught up in the mix tape hype also. The guy looked like an explosive athlete on those things. Of course everybody looks good on those mix tapes with nobody playing any defense whatsoever. Those clips are from AAU tournaments where anybody can look good in that setting and not in state tournament or championship games. They are puff pieces to make the guys look better than they really are and they are fools gold. Teague was solid and unspectacular during Kentucky’s run in 2012. He didn’t have to be great when Anthony Davis and MKG were leading the way. He wasn’t ready for the NBA and most people knew it, but there was the mass exodus after the title and he fed off of that even though he was massively overrated. He is now paying the price for leaving early.

FastAndFuriousParticipantNaw he didnt need to stay at UK did yall see him in summerleague this summer? He clearly is an NBA player he dominated SL he just doesnt have any confidence.
Everything he showed in them mixtapes he was doing this summer he is explosive super quick with a tight handle.
He didnt need anymore time in college he just needs to find the right situation for him, hes going to kill the Dleague just like summer league watch what I tell you.

NJHooper95ParticipantKentucky is not built for players particularly pgs to stay more than one year. He would have got lost in the shuffle. That’s why Archie Goodwin belled out after one unspectacular season. Word was that Harrow was often getting the best of Teague in practice and was most likely to be the starter heading into the season. I’m sure Teague would have won the spot back after how horrible Harrow played but Teague would have been exposed by going back to a weak Kentucky team. Davis and MKG help to hide most of his deficiencies but that last year team would have shown his true colors.

clayj44ParticipantI just think that this kid needs to be given more time. Not every rookie is going to come flying out of the gates, remember that he was considered to be a better prospect than his brother, Im not sure if that is still true, but again he needs to be given some time to develop physically and mentally. His brother didn’t look all that impressive when he first came into the league, and I’d say that he turned out just fine.

FastAndFuriousParticipantAs I said earlier him staying at UK would have been dumb, dude can play point blank period he averaged 19 and 5 in the SL, all he needs is a confidence booster or possibly a change of scenery, if he couldn’t play why were teams(Utah,Minnesota) trying to pry him away from the Bulls?
He didn’t do as well at UK like many thought he would, because he was a score first PG and on a team where his scoring wasn’t needed as much, but he had a number of big games when it counted most.
All that talk of Harrow outplaying Teague was just a way to give Harrow hype heading into the next season, which it did and made Harrow a lottery pick on alot of draft boards before his season started, dude wasn’t nowhere near as talented as Marquis I never believed he outplayed Teague, and his play in the season proved that, Teague had EVERY advantage over Harrow no way in hell was that true, I do believe Harrow may have held his own but outplaying him? NO
And last but not least look at his brother Jeff, he also backed up Hinrich and was a 3rd string PG and it took him awhile to get adjusted and now he’s doing just fine, Marquis is just 20 alot younger than Jeff was, matter of fact Jeff wasn’t in the NBA until 21? Marquis will be ok, it may not be with the Bulls, but I do believe he will be ok.

RickSlickCHIParticipantHe has alot of potential, but he went to a system that does use their rookies that much, and when they really needed help from him, he hasn’t put in enough time. The D League should be organized more on Teams looking to develope their players going into draft night. If a team doesn’t draft a impact player, I feel they need to mix him right in with the D League to give him time to grow more. M Teague turned heads in the SL and I feel he can go right into the D League and do the same and also gain confidence. You can’t expect every 19 year old to come into the League and be a impact player. Look at most of these draft classes that have been mostly 20 and under alot of them wasn’t prepared, and fell off a roster. Going to the D League shouldnt be a negitive thing but rather a training course. its called Developement League not Demotion League. I’m, also surprised that the NBA isn’t calling more people from the D League to help out. Alot of teams like the Bulls could use this.
Also maybe the NBA needs to put more money into the D League to lure more potiental players who have a good chance to be on a NBA roster. Most of the big time college players who didn’t get drafted go overseas to get paid. I must admit the D League is full of nobodies, who most likely never get a chance to see a NBA roster.
Think about it does baseball potiental players go overseas to play? and guess why the MLB have a great farm system. Because they draft players send them to the farm teams to get developed first for most of them.

Moon RiverParticipantI think he is part of a package when the Bulls deal Deng and/or Boozer. He is still on his rookie contract and has some value as a very talented 20 year old with some upside. Thibs does not trust him and I think the final blow was when they signed DJ Augustine as it was a clear indication he is not where the Bulls need or want him to be.

Scott42444ParticipantI am a huge Bulls fan and I have wanted this guy to develop like Eric Bledsoe and net the Bulls something great in a trade. I originally thought it was a joke to draft him in the first place, with Rose, Hinrich, then Nate Robinson on the roster. But, staying with that Bledsoe idea I just kept thinking "trade chip". When you get into a draft, a team picking around 13th would take Teague, who is a young prospect with potential who has been coached by one of the best coaches in the league, win an NCAA Championship, guarded guys in the eastern conference playoffs and went against Derrick Rose in practice (versus a young college guy who has no experience and has bust potential, like Kendall Marshall). Basically, the Bulls get a late lotto pick in return for the 29th pick. Then, after watching him tear it up in the Summer league I started blaming Thibs and his distaste for young guys. None of that is true, as Tony Snell has been playing big minutes as a rookie this year. Fact is, he has not improved at all. From what I hear, he is not the "first one in, last to leave" type of guy. Sometimes they just don’t pan out.
