The 41-year-old former NBA Most Improved Player and two-time NCAA First Team All-American is still going strong. From the Japan Times: “Former NBA guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf has agreed to terms of a contract for the 2010-11 season and will return to the Kyoto Hannaryz for a second season, the bj-league team announced on Friday. Abdul-Rauf, 41, is the highest-profile player in the history of the bj-league. He was the No. 3 pick in the 1990 NBA Draft and played for the Denver Nuggets (1990-96), Sacramento Kings (1996-98) and Vancouver Grizzlies (2000-01). A former college scoring sensation at Louisiana State, Abdul Rauf has also played in Russia, Italy, Greece and Saudi Arabia. He averaged 17.9 points in 38 games for the expansion Hannaryz last season. He scored 20 or more points 19 times. In The Japan Times’ second annual Top 20 ranking of bj-league players, Abdul-Rauf was listed at No. 19.”

He had to have one of the strangest NBA Stories ever, his refusal to stand up for the national anthem really cost him his NBA career. I never quite understood him. I mean you are playing in America, you have to show some respect no matter how you feel. Just like in the Olympics. Even if you are playing team China you still stand up even though it’s not your country, it’s just about respect. He really alienated himself. All he had to do was stand up, it’s not like by standing up it’s declaring nationalism to the U.S. Also don’t understand why he’d want to play in the NBA since he hated the country so much. I know he’s tried to explain himself and act like the victim but I can’t say that I support the guy.

i dont support him. He wrote an article a while back where he was basically saying his refusal to stand was what blacklisted him out the league. Im not some hardcore nationalistic american, but what he did was disrespectful. He says he has problems iwht ameirca, who doesnt to some extent? The country is not perfect, but the anthem represents everyone. We should all take pride in our contry especially someone making millions here.

sorry and i know i am going to get chunks of negatives but that anthem does not represent everyone in this country in a positive manner. that anthem is the war song that signifies relentless oppression for many not only here but globally. i remember back when abdul-rauf refused to stand and i thought then that it was wrong. i was a naive kid. in the years since i have come to know what he felt at least similarly. if standing for the anthem is about respecting the country you are playing in then i suggest the country you are playing in to show respect for everyone in turn. face it, america has never respected everyone that the anthem is alleged to represent. let the barrage of negative flow…

Flag does not mean sh!t to some people. Say your native american or your family were slaves. That pain and struggle could still hurt, losing your family history could still hurt. He should have just stood up and faced the flag like whatever. I understand his position on the whole thing cuz my fam history is from both of what I just said. No history because of america’s past. Just play the game and ignore the ceremony. I understand his feelings, but he took the ceremony too personal.

Good for him. If he wants to keep playing and there is someone willing to pay him to do it, he should go as long as his body allows. So many guys fall out of the NBA and retire with no idea what to do with themselves. If a guy can suck up his pride and deal with the lesser money and mediocre facilities, he might find it to be better than trying to find a golf game.

Flag means nothing and that issue was nothing big and was over back in 95 or 96.
Standing wouldn’t have meant anything most stand even if they don’t want to.
Kids don’t have to stand in school now even I hear.
Good for him to keep playing at that age.

NYK2010, I’m sure you meant to say the flag means nothing to you. You’re certainly not speaking for many Americans when you say the American flag means nothing. If flags don’t mean anything, then why does every country have one?
As far as Abdul-Rauf not standing, I don’t care. If he didn’t consider himself an American then it doesn’t matter to me if he stood or not.

Agreed on the points about the anthem not representing everyone. When it was made along with the declaration of independence, there were a lot of people that it was understood that were in the country that would not have the same rights. Today you have a bunch of the hispanic population that are here legally that are going to get harassed left and right. There are a lot of other groups here facing their own issues as well. The United States is controlled by a bunch of rich greedy people that are only concerned about other rich greedy people.
I remember when I was a kid there was this Jehovah’s witness that I was friends with. People used to be shocked and teachers would seem to get upset when he wouldn’t stand up. I never understood what the big deal was. I mean the biggest reason I stood up was because I was told to and that’s what everyone else did. But that’s how they like it, brain wash you when you are young so you can grow up screaming at anyone that doesn’t do what you were told to do. So you can say that someone doesn’t love a country or doesn’t respect the country because they don’t honor it in the same way. The guy made a political statement without hurting anyone, but I think America has a hard time seeing athletes that think anything about other than money, winning games and women.

disagree. America has grown through many ups and downs. The athem and the flag do not just represent the government or the past or the rich or the poor or any one religion or democrats or republicans or people who dont believe in any of that. It represents everyone and all america. If you dont want to stand that is your choice, but its a disrespect to america as a whole and its the choice of the fans to not support him. Even Hakeem Olajuwon is also muslim called him out for it at the time saying he was disrespecting america and that was not what the muslim religion is about.

I played high school ball in the state of mississippi and i have never seen a better pure shooter!! I look at guys like reggie miller, ray allen, and a few others but when this kid was on a role there was no one better!! When he was in college he had 2 all american 7 footers on his team and he still had the green light to shoot!! He could miss 10 shots in a row and his coach would still tell him to keep shooting!! Mr Rauf is undoubtedly the best pure shooter i have ever seen!!

Great player, got blackballed for standing up for what he believes in. If you can understand the reasons why many black Americans changed their names like he did through the years, you can understand why he didn’t want to participate. Though I’ll admit it was very bold and PR-wise a bad move for him to put the attention on himself by doing this, but obviously he didn’t care. Funny to see him still playing at that age, he must really love the game (or need money).

Although I do disagree with what he did in regards to the anthem. I know that the anthem doesn’t stand for everyone, but let it go. I could honestly care less about the song’s meaning. All I know is that this country gives me a hope much greater than my homeland, so the least I could do is respect it’s anthem.
