Tim49461ParticipantHi guys,
Could really use the basketball knowledge of this forum for this college class.
What I need is some names of high profile highschool basketball players (or Footbal) that had a career ending injury (In highscool or early on in college). Also if you are aware, where/what they are doing now.
Thank you guys!

FourParticipantIf you’ll take football I seem to recall that general consensus was that the eldest Manning son may have been more talented than Eli and Peyton. I can’t recall what befell him but I believe it was an injury or ailment of some sort.

Tim49461ParticipantSorry to narrow the search even more. The topic is Early Specialization in Sports. So professional players have to be not included. Basically I’m trying to find a High School superstar who was destined for greatness but injury never allowed him to even play again.
It’s a tough search I spent a couple days looking through articles trying to find someone that is note worthy.

JoeWolf1Kevin Ware. Tried to come back, and ended up redshirting this season and has now announced he’s transferring. His story is far from over, but his injury was pretty devistating.

drice4life1753ParticipantRonnie Fields is probably your best bet.
Brandon Roy career ending happened in the NBA, but may be the best example of chronic injuries ending a career. Rather than a random/freak injury.
Being in school I know you probably have strict criteria to meet, but especially w/ basketball there are more cases that players career never took off due to lifestyle, drugs, or lack of motivation. Not to say injury hasn’t ruined many, but there is a plethora of players who have well doumented stories that relate more to the conflict between street culture and basketball. One of the best documentaries I’ve seen capturing this is "Hooked" about Demetrius Mitchell, absolutely crazy.
To fit your criteria the best I can think of, besides Fields, was Hank Gathers. But again, it was more a freak thing rather than injury issue, and not much information after his playing days….assuming you don’t know his story.
Finally if you haven’t seen the Len Bias 30 for 30 documentary, scrap the assignment and just watch that. Your proffesor should understand. aha

HaleParticipantSterling Sharpe for the Packers. I know you said high school or college but that’s the only one I could think of that hasn’t been said. I believe he is an analyst now.

foochiemorrisParticipantHe played for 7 pro seasons. 7 Pro Seasons. 5 Pro Bowls. I’m mean at that point, why not Gayle Sayers or Bo Jackson. Most NFL’ers would kill to play 7 years. Come on, Dude. You’re not even trying.

Memphis MadnessParticipantDeuce Ford was a McDonald’s All American who went to Memphis, played on some solid teams with Cedric Henderson, Lorenzen Wright, and David Vaughn in the early/mid-Nineties.
He struggled, hurt his knee, transferred to LSU, played well, but hurt his knee again or some other injury problem. Never sniffed the NBA.

CameronCrazy11ParticipantLuke Recker definitely was not paralyzed. Just trying to keep facts straight. He was involved in a car accident but played two years at IU and two more at Iowa and averaged almost 16 a game for his career.

CrossyboyParticipantGoogle McDonalds All-Americans for each year from 1999.
Google any names you don’t recognise.
Plenty will have never made the NBA due to injury, but most will still have played some form of professional basketball.

ropeParticipantLook into Austin Hatch. He was a University of Michigan recruit who was in a private plane crashed that killed his father. (FWIW – it was the second plane crash he survived.) He came back to score one basket in a HS game. Plenty of coverage on this the last few years on ESPN. Pretty compelling story.
FWIW – I played against his dad in HS. Hellacious athlete who went on to play football at U of M and later became a doctor. Two plane crashes in which he was the pilot decimated their family. Darn shame, for sure.
