 I give another update on Greek basketball player Lefteris Bochoridis that I have been talking about here for a long time now.

Bochoridis is a 6-5 combo guard with a 6-9 wingspan. But in the last two years he has only played as a point guard with his club team. But he can play both guard positions. He is playing in the big Greek Euroleague club of Panathinaikos.

He is a good ball handler, he is a good shooter, with good shooting range, and he is a good defender. This is his automatic draft eligible year, and yet he appears on no NBA mock draft lists. He is like an American college senior.

If he was an American and playing in NCAA, I am sure that he would definitely be drafted in the first round. Since he is Greek though he evidently is not even on NBA radar.

 Every single young Greek player puts small buyout options for NBA after each season in their contracts now. They do everything and so do their agents to stop the excuses NBA makes up all these years for not drafting them.

Yet still, they don’t get draft consideration.

 If the guy is actually good or shows high potential then someone will draft him probably in the late second round as a draft and stash. Organizations like the Spurs rarely leave talent up for grabs when they can secure a players rights with a second round pick.

I know scouting has come a long way and that all teams have euro scouts and such, but it is difficult to properly gauge talent if it is playing outside the US. Players can look better/worse depending on their situation. Just look at Hezonja last year. After he declared his interest in trying the NBA, his minutes almost evaporated. 

This is why Australian players have been going the college route a lot more recently. It’s better for their draft stock to get exposure in the US system. I know no Greek kid in his right mind is going to turn down the guaranteed dollars a European contract would bring in favour of going to college, but the trade off is a lack of exposure.
