This is shocking news, but I immediately believe that this may be a great thing long-term for the bucks and a blessing in disguise.

I’ve always worried that Sanders mentality would wear off on some of they other young bucks like Giannis, removing a cancer like Sanders can only help. While I thought he was a defensive force and when he’s playing right(which hasn’t happened these past two years), he is most certainly disruptive.

Now, the bucks move on, get to develop Henson and I could see him blossoming big time now and they no longer have to concern themselves with Sander’s issues potentially rubbing off on some of the other young guys.

    Go Bucks!

I just read the Real GM tidbit about it. I wonder what else is going on with him to up and decide he doesnt want to play anymore. Most people are the opposite, dreaming of the opportunity to continue playing sport.

maybe he’s going through a rolando mcclain type life moment.  i remember he was drafted by baltimore ravens, then went off the deep end, retired and now he’s back playing some inspired football.

i agree though, the bucks may be better off without him and have zaza and henson anyways.

Rolando McLain was drafted 8th overall by the Oakland Raiders and it looked like a typical Raiders move. The Ravens then gave him a chance and that’s when he had his struggle and retired but has since come back to play on the Dallas Cowboys and be productive and his sports lifted

He’s also always I think considered himself to be highly philosophical, more along the lines of a Ricky Williams, as I remember him coming out and suggesting that pot should be legalized more so than apologizing for his use when he was suspended.

philosophical? that just makes him sound like he really likes smoking weed. nothing more.

this isn’t all that surprising. sanders didn’t grow up playing ball. dude was a skateboarder who liked to draw. he only picked up basketball because he had the size to, but by the sounds of it, he probably only saw basketball as a means to an end, not a passion.

if he doesn’t want to play anymore, then bucks should be well in their rights to seek to void his contract.

i get and respect the whole "do what you love" thing, but i better not read anything about his money getting low and him renewing a "passion" for the game. if his contract is voided and he quits basketball, he should be effectively blackballed.

He has always been considered a misunderstood and more philosophical kinda guy.  The weed story isn’t why.  He’s just wired differently than most basketball players.  If you ever look up some of his interviews when he’s interviewed just walking around Milwaukee and stuff or at this Kid’s Award Ceremony that he was a guest at once, he comes off as an extremely intelligent guy.

There was a thread the other day about disruptive influences in the locker room.  I completely forgot about Sanders, but he should have been included.  This is a talented basketball player, but it just seems like it is a hobby to him and not a profession.

I say pull the plug on him Bucks and let him do what he wants to do outside of the NBA.

Interesting trade of Knight and Sanders for Hibbert from last year in the attached article.

It would be a shame if Larry wants out of the game at only 26 years old, his new contract only kicked in last summer so it’s not like he has earnt mega money already.

What are the contract implications against the cap?

If he doesn’t play then his contract would sort of stay on the books like when an older guy retired but what would happen if he wanted to return say two years down the line, he could not roll up again at the Bucks and expect to be paid his $11 million a year. I’d assume the Bucks would still hold his registration?

Could his contract be traded etc?

I read that Sanders will forfeit his $33mil over the next 3 years if he decides to quit.

Sanders showed flashes of brilliance before gettign that contract – if his heart is just not in it anymore the Bucks just got lucky with their salary cap……………

That’s a whole lot of money to leave on the table whether he loves the game or not. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay and play uninspired underachieving basketball so he can still collect on that big contract.

I reckon Sanders isn’t the idiot that the media portrays him. He just doesn’t like playing basketball as much as we do.

When your 7ft tall and athletic, I figure he’d have so many people telling him to pursue the NBA.

But if the man just wants to lead an un-materialistic lifestyle, blaze up and work in another industry like fruit & vegetable picking, then I see no problem with that provided he’s not getting paid 11m per season.

Nice to see everyone posting in this thread seems to understand. The pressures that are attached to being a professional in any field can be too much for most people to overcome. The media will bash him, make fun of him and drag his name through the mud although I respect anybody in the world that can pass up on $33-Million just as much as I respect anybody working his or her butt off for that $33-Million as long as its for the right reasons.

Usually the media will point to mental issues or pot or alcohol abuse to explain to fans why he didn’t feel like selling thier product. I’m sure there’s a fair percentage of users on this forum that would fall into the same category if scrutinized as heavily.

All mental issues, and substance abuse aside…maybe he just doesn’t want to play ball.

P.S. I do not agree with just quitting but I do respect the mans decision alot. The nevative feedback he will get especially from family will be huge but its his decision and its hard to make the decision that leaves you with no regrets with everybody on your balls. Although $33-Million could do a lot for a lot of people in my family. I’ve wanted to quit my job as well but am not in a position to as I have built responsibility and I’m not even making 1% of what he makes annually.

Also the $33-Million on paper does not cover his other expenses he and his family have likely already invested in. I’m sure taxes hit hard, property tax, maintenance fees, if his vehicles are leased, his agent fees, and idk but I’m sure there’s more.

Hasn’t Sanders been in trouble for hitting people and neglecting animals, the Bucks and their fans should be happy to have Sanders and his terrible contract go away and Henson is a much better player anyway.

    1. Larry Sanders is not a cancer for the young players.  Giannis has already talked a ton about how much of a mentor Larry has been to him and how Larry has sort of adopted him as his little brother.  He’s made some mistakes off the court, and sometimes on the court as well, but he’s a good person, and he’s very loyal to his teammates.

    2. Jason Kidd says Larry is expected to return to the team and continue playing in a day or two.  Larry himself said that this report was non-sense.

    3. No, John Henson is not better than Larry Sanders.  Henson has stepped it up big time recently, and hopefully will continue to develop, but before the last couple of games when he’s played out of his mind, he’s been far inferior to Larry.  His stats are similar, but Larry impacts the game a lot more.

My use of the “Cancer” may have been a bit strong. However, I strongly question whether bucks fans would really want Giannis, Jabari and any future young guys to look up to someone like Sanders. Sanders has obviously made some questionable decisions during his career. I mean this is the guy who’s been suspended for smoking weed, broke his hand in a bar fight, and now recently has had his love for the game questioned. If he doesn’t love the game, good for him if he can leave the game and leave the money it shows a strong will, but I just would hate to see the mentality wear off on the others.

I think the future is incredibly bright in Milwaukee with Giannis and Jabari. Giannis seems to have a terrific head on his shoulders and I would hate to see that affected in any way.

Gery Woelfel has always had a thing for Sanders and has posted misleading info about Larry in the past (I.E., saying he checked himself into rehad when he really was just complying with league mandatory drug rehabilitation procedure).

That said, Larry has never seemed like a guy who would be playing basketball if he was 3 inches shorter.  Lee Jenkins wrote a profile of him during his breakout season two years ago and he made it sound like Sanders’ real passion was artwork/computer design.  Larry was a guy who didn’t start playing basketball until relatively late, when he had already had a growth spurt.

We don’t know why Larry is not playing right now, as the team said it was the flu and then changed the explanation to "personal reasons."  He has not played since a players-only meeting after the Bucks’ disappointing loss to Charlotte.

Hopefully Larry can return to the team and embrace his role as a low-minute backup, as I believe Kidd stated that he would not start when he returned.  Larry has been an destructive force on offense for the Bucks, being among the worst offensive players in the league, and his elite defense is less valuable than it could be due to the Bucks’ aggressive help defense, which limits the need for dominant individual PnR defenders.  Zaza is clearly the team’s best center and Henson could in theory be just as good as Larry, since he is a much more competent offensive player, even though he lacks Sanders’ defensive instincts/awareness.
