MopgrassParticipantBleacher Report (bad source) quoted Colin Cowherd (never heard of him) in saying that he’s got two separate sources saying that the Lakers will trade their top pick (assuming they get it) no matter what.
Big mistake?
On one hand, adding a young draft pick seems like a good way to develop the young core while adding all-star level veterans will stunt that growth. On the other hand, one all-star (gotten from the draft pick trade) and 3 promising players might help pull in some respectable free agents.

goneParticipantTwo men washing hands in a ESPN headquarters bathroom.
Man1: "did you hear KD is thinking bout the Lakers"
Man2: "Oh word? They probably gonna do a s&t with the pick and somebody else"
A man in the stall overhears the convo and scribbles something on toilet paper.
Colin Cowherd: "Yes welcome back, and I have info from sources close to Laker management, and they are going to trade their pick no matter where it lands"

OhCanada-ParticipantDefinitely not a legitimate source. He’s right though. LA isn’t a good place for young players to start their career, just way too much limelight, clubs, media presence and pressure. The Lakers will likely try to trade for Cousins, Griffin, Butler by offering young pieces and they will likely try to sign Derozan and build a team that can compete going forward. Although that’s likely what their game plan is the market is not going to necassarily fold for them and do what they want.
Cousins and Derozan likely stay put. There’s no way Derozan leaves Toronto he has formed a brotherly bond with Lowry and talked Lowry into resigning when Kyle could have left. He’s not going anywhere or it would be a very ugly and misled leave for him.
Although I can see Boogie wearing a Lakers uniform next year and expect those talks to heat up. A top 3 pick if retained and Dangelo Russell sounds about right. Another trade could be made with Clarkson and Randle and then they could likely land some free agents although they would be wise just to stick to the rebuild.

Hype MachineI like Cowherd, but you can’t take him on face value. He is a smart, entertaining guy with a big mouth…..but essentially he’s paid to create hype and his listeners love it. Hell…I love it. Sometimes he’s so persuasive that you almost believe him….but then you need to remind yourself that its Colin Cowherd and get back down to reality.
He makes opinions, he doesn’t state facts. I’ll still tune in though…

ExumInfernoParticipantThis time of year, even more than other times, all these sources and things are usually nothing.
But for the Lakers trading their pick, it makes sense for them. They never want to rebuild, and teams will give up a lot for a high pick, sometimes.
Everyone does have to wait for the lottery, a small chance the Lakers don’t have the pick to trade.

ThenilonatorParticipantCousins in LA would have worse repercussions than delight going back to LA. Why you would even contemplate using a top pick and a young talent to sign cousins is beyond me!

Mr. HookShotParticipantAgree with a couple of guys up here stating trading their pick doesn’t sound as bad as it seems. They have a couple of nice young talents, and if they believe they will be stars going forward adding additional (more experienced) guys via trade or FA might speed up their process of competing. While it remains a risky proposition to rely on Russell/Randle/Clarkson (who they will resign) to flourish into a star, relying on draft picks to become stars is also a wild guess. If they can somehow convince an elite player to sign this year, and maybe pick another star up via a trade they might be in a position to compete for a playoff seed next season…

ThenilonatorParticipantIf they pick up an elite player and then another star via trade and don’t make playoffs next year Luke Walton will end up a 1 year coach in LA

KingPapasParticipantAny great organization should want to get players below their market value. The best way to do that is to get players on rookie contracts. If the Lakers trade the pick, they will be a middle of the pack team for the next 5 years.

Magic JordanParticipantIn my opinion I wouldn’t trade Simmons OR Ingram for either of the two most talked about players that could be on the market. Jimmy Butler and Cousins. Butler seemingly has those awful Chicago knees and he’s already 27. By the time the Lakers are a playoff team he will be pushing 30 or beyond.
Cousins I just don’t really like. I would prefer my center to do center things. Protect the paint, rebound and set good screens. Wings can score I don’t need that from my 5 man.
If it’s the 3rd pick then I would feel better about trading it, but the top two in my opinion would be basically off limits unless a holy shit offer came along.
Another thing is Laker info doesn’t get leaked. Any "sources" in regards to the Lakers are lies because they run a tight ship. Not even the legendary Woz could crack them on draft night. People only find out what they are doing when they want them too.
With all of that they wouldn’t be doing their job if they didn’t at least gauge the market for the pick. Ultimately I think they hold onto it and add another piece to the young core to grow with the young coach.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThey need to get Hassan Whiteside. He’s a beast!
In LA he would have a couple of young guards around him in Russell and Clarkson.
Plus, Randle can help out on the boards.
For the draft: Obviously Ben Simmons or Ingram would be good.
If they fall to 3, then I think they should go with Buddy Hield IF they can’t trade down.
Then you have a 3 guard rotation.
Russell and Hield would give you a slightly bigger backcourt where both guys can really shoot it.
For small forward, I would go after Harrison Barnes. Does a lot of things well, and he is a core guy. Played under Luke so that should work.
Then you round out the roster. I would take a look at Seth Curry. Take a flyer on Steph’s younger brother. he could give the Lakers two really good shooters off the bench (Buddy Hield and Seth Curry).
Then add a cheap veteran small forward.
I would focus on a core (assuming they land neither Simmons nor Ingram) of Hassan Whiteside, D’Angelo Russell, Harrison Barnes, Buddy Hield, Julius Randle, Larry Nance, Jr., and Seth Curry.

HitsterParticipantThe Lakers have a stack of cap room. Even if they aren’t in the market for KD or LBJ, surely they can chase one or two good level FAs especially if the pick this year stays with them. The Lakers is still a team a lot of players would dream about playing for and to be able to offer someone the chance to be one of the top players there must be a selling point.
It will be interesting to know if Luke Walton will have any say over FA targets and especially if they keep the pick and it lands at 3 as that draft spot is less clear.
Whiteside looks a good target for them if he wants onto a younger team, I wouldn’t mind them targeting Horford as he’d be a good top senior player on a young team. Harrison Barnes will be mentioned a lot too with Luke Walton taking over too.
