the knicks could use some help in the backcourt…so why not try out some cheap players with a bit of potential

I’ve always been curious about that guy, I’ve read reports and seen international highlights, but I’ve never actually seen him play. This summer there was talk on nbadraft.net about him being a potential all-star because of the Chinese influence on all-star voting, lol

In regard to a forum topic for “who will have a breakout season” I recently posted the following:

Yi Jianlian. Why would this underachieving powerforward be MIP? He averaged 8 and 5 the last two seasons…It doesn’t seem very impressive right? However this might work in his favor to be MIP, for he has a lot of room to show improvement–Also expectations are fairly low for Yi as people already write him off as a bust. Truth is, he is far from it. Here’s why:

Yi is improving–greatly. Besides showing bursts in early ’09 the guy had awesome performances in the international tournaments this summer to lead China (without Yao) to a championship game.

So he has the potential.

But most importantly the Nets will give him the opportunity to shine. Why? They want him to develop because if he develops that equals Chinese advertisement/industry. If Yi becomes a Chinese enterprise the Nets would capitalize by enticing either Lebron or Wade to join the team in 2010.

Why would Yi’s popularity entice Lebron or Wade? Because every single Nets game is televised in China. If Lebron or Wade play along side Yi, that means millions (potentially billions) of dollars of Chinese marketing available to said player. Tons of money would basically be there for a superstar just because he plays alongside a chinese star.

And these superstars know this. They aren’t dumb.

So if Yi’s development next season could translate into the Nets getting a Lebron or Wade then the Nets are going to try as hard as they can to let Yi realize his potential. They will allow him to work through the lumps and get him to do what he did during the international games this summer.

That’s why Yi is my pick for MIP.

*Also to note. China will be focusing only on Yi this season with Yao’s injuries. More exposure means more potential for a Yi enterprise which means welcome to Brooklyn Lebron! (or wade)

Considering this, maybe the Knicks think signing Sun Yue could be a Yi Jianlian light. I really cant see any other reason for why the knicks would sign such a horrible player. And if this is reason then its a desperate attempt. Good luck knicks!

He has no position and he’s not an NBA player at all. You get the most value from him at PG, but he’s simply too weak and not good at anything to make the roster.

Think Yi Jinlian can be a solid player. He has shown flashes he just has to stay healthy and be more consistent night in and night out. I think this up coming season is big for him. He has to become more consistent. If he stays healthy I expect him to show he is not a bust.

I agree with you and I think with Yi it is all about getting some NBA swagger because he has skills and the raw tools. I dont know much about Sun Yue other than he has at least one ring lol

I disagree with the comments about Sun Yue. I remember last year when he played at the olympics and he was very good. He’s a threat and has great size for a guard.

Can we stop using the Olympics like a scouting event? International basketball and NBA basketball aren’t comparible based on style of play, court configuration and rule differences. Like Jasikevicius following Lithuania’s great run, foreign players get overrated playing in a forum that 1) gives them a better chance to succeed based on said rule differences, and 2) playing against ‘the best world competition’ when the best competition unequivically exists in the NBA. If they cant do it in the NBA, then they can’t do it in the NBA. I know its redundant, but its something thats overlooked. When people look at summer league performances, or college performances, or international performances, and expect a direct transition, its unrealistic, especially when players have glaring weaknesses.

Typical Americans. Always think the world revolves around them. The NBA is so dominant that USA couldnt win anything for years in the early 2000’s. You’re absolutely wrong to suggest that “the best competition unequivically exists in the NBA.” What a load of BS. I bet you don’t watch any Euroleague or ACB do you? The NBA isn’t the be-all-and-end-all.
