Damn it hasn’t been 12 hours and they both got the boot! Wonder if they got fired in the lockeroom and still had to fly back with the players. Who should coach the Knicks and Magic next?

If a team needs to replace their coach then it makes sense to do it as soon as the season ends. Knicks will probably look for a big name or someone proven. Magic need someone who has a good record of developing young players.

The usual names will be banded about. It will be interesting if they try to target any Assistants from Play Off Teams, a team competing in the play offs would not want to be disrupted and anyone moving over would unlikely happen before a play off run was over.

If it happened to be an Assistant lets say from GSW or Houston whose team could well go to NBA Finals then not getting them in post until after finals could be an issue as Team would probably want them around in draft workouts etc.

I think Orlando could do far worse than make a big offer to one of the best young college coaches around someone like Porter Moser who took Loyola-Chicago to NCAA Final 4 and whose stock must be high at the moment.

Doc rivers has ties to Orlando and has been successful for the organization in the past. After missing the playoffs and being demoted from his gm role, his future with the clippers could be up in the air. Could the magic lure him back? Seems like a long shot but it’s at least worth entertaining. 

Jeff van gundy would be a nostalgic pick for Knicks fans and a link to their last period of sustained success as a franchise. He is still widely well-regarded in coaching circles but hasn’t coached in the nba in over a decade and who knows how eager he is to get back in. Still, it at least seems like a possibility, if a slim one.

Mark Jackson and David fizdale’s names will probably be thrown around for both situations. Neither really seems like an ideal long-term solution but both have a track record of turning teams around and getting the most out of their players.

Both of these franchises are notorious for front office dysfunction and chewing coaches up and spitting them out. To lure a established coach will probably require heavy compensation and possibly some say in personnel decisions.

 Coaching is a tough job. Luckily for them their contracts are guaranteed at least. The Knicks had playoff aspirations until Kristaps went down. I don’t know what happened to the Magic. They started off really strong and lost it completely as the season went on. It will be interesting to see if whoever is brought in can help turn these teams around because they’ve both been bad for a while now.

everyone msises the 90s knicks of which jackson was essential so it would be great to see Mark Jackson bring back some toughness to NYC.

Dolan would be the worst and I’d stay away.  But if he could bring NY back to some glory, it’d not only redeem the Knicks but also redeem himself after geting fired by the Warriors.  I don’t know how different Jackson is from Hornacek, both from the same era.

What i feel is that each town shuld have its identity.  Like the Pittsburgh Steelers woudn’t look good with a soft defense and a high octane offense.  In the same way, the Knicks to me are bruisers.  

Watching the Knicks play eurostyle ball with movement and stuff….just doesn’t seem right!

 I would love to see Mark Jackson get another shot. A New York guy that could better handle the NY media and Dolan. Knicks might wanna see if Nova’s Jay Wright is interested. Seems like he’s committed to Nova for Life.But u never know.

I’m obviously Not a Knicks fan but I Luv’d it when the Knicks were relevant back in the late 90’s b/c they compell you to take a side & Watch the games 

But the Knicks fans are held hostage by yet another Trust Fund Baby in James Dolan who was literally just born to the right people 

As far as Orlando – what a Mess – Vogul is great coach but the management has been a mess 

Anyone else find it Ironic that Orlando was part of the Huge 4 team deal w/ Phila, Denver & LA that brought Bynum to Phila (&Destroyed that franchise) & Howard to LA (which started the bottoming out of the Lakers) 

The Magic have been Awful ever since 2012 b/c of it, the Lakers & Sixers were wrecked & both started full rebuilds one year later in 2013. It’s interesting b/c Rarley do we have a comparison between multiple teams at a single moment in time where a move brought on 3 Rebuilds

It’s now 2018 & let’s compare where the Magic, Sixers & Lakers are today – And the Magic are in the Exact same spot – drafting around #5 – but not low enough to get a potential Franchise Super Star & they’ll be in the Exact same place next season

 Doc if he wanted to move on from the Clippers would be a good choice for Orlando but in my mind he’d seem more the high profile sort of name the Knicks might hire and they’d have deep pockets to make him a big offer.

Doc though may prefer to go to a contender and neither team are anywhere near that.

The Magic with John Hammond running their draft do have a guy with a proven record there so top coaches may feel he could be a guy they’d trust to put them a good roster together.

With Stan Van Gundy likely to lose at least one of his roles in Detroit – might him returning to the Magic as coach with Hammond running the FO be an idea. SVG had success with the Magic as a coach before and if you back Hammond to build him a good roster then would you back SVG to do a good job as coach?

Brett Gunning one of Houston’s assistants had that role with the Magic before and for many years was a highly rated assistant of Jay Wright, could he be an option for the Magic or if the Knicks tried to tempt Wright by getting Brett in place as lead Assistant.

 If you look at it both teams have never given the coach pieces to fully suceed,

The Magic had the best overall roster of the two and the Knicks have had the most superstars of the 2(Porzingas and Melo-when he first got there).

However for the next step I would give the coach I go after 3 years and expect the following:

Player development 

steady improvement-not one good year then drop off straight  the next sort of job. See luke Walton and Thibs t-wolves to what I mean with this.

The Star player/Franchise players want to play for the coach. See Porzingas not wanting to give Jeff H full effort to what I mean.

So with that being said.

I could see Fizzdale and Marc Jackson being candidates for the Knicks. As both could handle the media ,the Pressure of the Knicks market and have both got some player development experience under their belt.Marc with GSW and Fizzdale with Miami.

Orlando is a bit harder to pick though do yo believe they have the roster to develop or if they are one or two pieces away from being a legit playoff team.

If you believe it is a development team then you go after the best available player development coach. Which gives you a bigger net of Coaches to look at ranging from College,NBA Coaches not in a job to international coaches

If you believe they are a fringe playoff team you look at :

Doc R-If fired

Stan Van G if Fired 

 Jeff  Van G(But I could see him asking for a front office role to come off the sidelines)

Fizzdale

and

 Out of the names I’ve seen tied to the jobs if I was NY I would hire David Blatt and Orlando should hire Jerry Stackhouse.

 I don’t know how the relationship between Hammond and Kidd was in Milwaukee, otherwise Kidd could be a choice for the Magic.

Blatt has a good relationship with the Knicks GM and may be good with the European mentality from working there.

Which could benefit with Porzingis and Ntilikina.

Stackhouse will get a chance, but if van Gundy leaves Detroit I would like to see him start there.

Why don’t the Spurs give Monty Williams a chance, because Pop hasn’t got the eternal life and he has the time now to groom his as his succesor.

 Dolan didn’t so much as call him to enquire about Ewing’s potential nterest the last time. Ewing seems all in at Georgetown now, so that ship has unfortunately sailed. One of the best AC’s of the past 2 decades is there on a platter and Dolan did nothing.

 Pat Ewing would be a good call for either role – one of the Knick’s greatest players ever and also a well respected assistant coach for 5 years at the Magic. For such a top player and a well respected assistant coach, it was amazing he never got the offer to be an NBA Head Coach.

I wonder if he maybe didn’t want the pressure of the role and enjoyed working with the young bigs more. He has always been a class act and I can think of no reason why he would not have been offered a lead job unless he didn’t want it or might have been seen as too nice a guy,

If either Magic or Knicks ended up getting lucky in the draft lottery then Pat would be a great guy to coach a Ayton or Bagley etc. In NY he’d have chance to work with Porz too so the logic of either team making him an offer would be strong,.

 If the Knicks or Magic were smart they’d tried to pluck Aaron McKie from the Sixers coaching staff.  He’s a great player developer who also knows the x n o’s.  But most important he has the energy to deal with the situations in them organizations.
