kj mcdaniels and the tale of the 76ers

adam woj from yahoo is reporting that 76ers and mcdaniels couldn’t agree to deal so he took a league min, non-guaranteed contract and can become a restricted free agent next season. for someone that was speculated to be a starter or key contributor off the bench, it’s hard to imagine how the 76ers didn’t make this a high priority (especially considering their stagnant offseason). the kid could be the next parsons; i guess the 76ers don’t feel the same.
maybe i’m missing something here? if so, please fill me in.

its rare that a 2nd round pick gets a guaranteed deal…so this isnt unusual at all..
philly have jerami grant,elliott williams,hollis thompson,jarvis varando ,jakaar sampson and casper ware all ”locked” into non-guaranteed multi year deals…
philly will have to offer him 1.2 million just to keep him out of unrestricted free agency in 2015….smart move by mcdaniels and his agent….if he performs well he can make more money….gilbert arenas was drafted by the warriors in the 2nd round became a free agent and played well enuff to earn himself huge contract with washington….

The guy who I think can be the next Parsons is Early, I even wrote a topic on it. KJ is just an athlete, Parsons was skilled and so is Early. McDaniels can do well, but that’d probably be on dunks and chasedown blocks. It’s uncommon for 2nd rounders to GET guaranteed money, not get unguaranteed money.

you might be right on the comparison of early to parsons vs. mcdaniels to parsons so i’m not really interested in arguing that point. mcdaniels shot really well during summer league so you never know the improvements…
my point is the guys below are 2nd round picks in this years’ draft with guaranteed contracts in their first (some also second) years and team options to follow. the 76ers aren’t strapped for cash so not getting a similar deal for mcdaniels really doesn’t make much sense to me…

  It wasn’t the 76ers choice. They offered a contract with non-guaranteed years in 3 and 4. KJ and his agent declined it and decided to play on a one year non guaranteed deal instead. Risky move by him, but if he believes in his game it’s better to get paid sooner rather than later…. but it wasn’t the 76ers decision. If they had their way they would have inked him to a deal like the players you mentioned.

arenas’ situation was an okay example, but there are distinct differences. Gilbert’s deal with the warriors was for 2 years, a norm for 2nd round picks back then, not 1 or 4. after arenas won most improved player after his second year, he was a restricted free agent. the warriors wanted to bring him back, but they didnt have the cap space to do so.
heres where it got tricky and why they made a new rule in the CBA. even though he was a RFA, the warriors couldnt go over the salary cap to resign him since they dint have his bird rights. to qualify and have a players bird rights, the player needed to be under contract for a minimum of 3 years. so even though golden state wanted to have him back and match the deal washington gave him, they couldnt without gutting their roster to teams with cap space or trade exceptions.
a more simillar contract situation would be marquis daniels. daniels was an undrafted rookie in 2003. the mavs signed to a 1 year deal after a strong performance in summer league. he then went to have a very good rookie year and was a RFA the following off-season. the result? he got a full MLE deal starting at 5 mill a season. his fellow rookie teamate, josh howard was in his guaranteed rookie scale contract and looked underpaid in the next 4 years.
what mcdaniels is doing now is a huge gamble for him, leaving a ton of guaranteed money on the table in your first year in the league. however, the pay out can be huge with his patience and if he can carve out a niche role in the league right away. i realy like the guy’s defensive ability and potential to be a 3 and D player or more. i do think he made the right move and at the very least, he can enter next years off-season at the very worst as an UFA which he could get a simillar deal the sixers are offering now.

Glenn Robinson just got the same deal with Minnesota. He’s behind a ton of guys and I think it was a smarter move by him than McDaniels. McDaniels will actually play.

KJ wants his game to talk, and if it does he is gonna get more Money. Smart. If he performs like a star, makes rookie sophmore game, and has good highlights he will make more money. Risky, but his agents knows the Sixers are a bad team and that his client will get the minutes.
