mikeyvthedonParticipantTop 25 US high schooler, Khadeem Lattin, enrolls at the Canarias Basketball Academy!
205, Class of 2014 forward, Khadeem Lattin has enrolled at the Canarias Basketball academy. Ranked 21st in the 2014 ESPNU Terrific 25, to our knowledge, Lattin is the first top 25 High School basketball player from the United States in HISTORY to emigrate to a foreign country to develop his talents.
http://espn.go.com/collegesports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/class/2014/view/super60/sort/rank/order/true
Lattin, a native of Houston, Texas, is the son of ex NCAA, WNBA (USC Trojan and Houston Comets) and former US National Team player, Monica Lamb.Khadeem is also the grandson of Dave Lattin, the starting center for legendary, Texas Western University, the 1966 NCAA Championship winning team that started 5 black players. And just like his grandfather did in 1966, Khadeem is now trailblazing a road for himself as well.Welcome to the CBA family Khadeem!
http://www.cbacademy.org/index.asp?modulo=23&id=80&idioma=enSaw about this on ESPN Recruiting Nation on Dave Telep’s Twitter. Pretty cool to see a kid from the US going to Spain to work on his game, definitely intriguing. I do not think this rules out Khadeem eventually coming back and playing in the NCAA, but this is definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
For those who have seen "Glory Road", David Lattin was the big Center for the Texas Western squad. So, the genes are definitely there. Khadeem is 6’9 and I think under 200 pounds, so it appears his strength will be something he develops. For those who do not know about Canarias Basketball Academy (I had heard of it, but did not know much about it), it appears to be an incredibly comprehensive high school/basketball program with the goal of developing pro level talent.
This is a link to their mission statement:

I think this is kind of cool and am definitely interested in how this all plays out. We had seen a lot of foreign players come to the USA, but we had not really seen elite level HS talent going overseas, other than having the intention of immediately going pro. I have a feeling that Khadeem Lattin will more than likely still be a big time college recruit. From 2008-2010, CBA sent 21 players to D1 programs, so it seems that it is not just a prep to pros training ground. Definitely an interesting course, wish Khadeem the best and wonder if he will become a possible trend setter.
Here is a highlight video of Khadeem Lattin from this past summer. He is currently rated the #21 prospect in the 2014 HS class:

mikeyvthedonParticipantIt is in Spain.
It offers a Post Graduate Training program and a Full Term High School program, with most enrollees being in the former. Their roster includes people from England, Holland, Belgium, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, Slovakia, Germany, Israel, Republic of Georgia, Switzerland, Senegal, Czech Republic, Spain and with Khadeem Lattin, the USA:

paradigmnParticipantI got him as the 5th best center prospect in class of 2014. This is actually pretty interesting….Since it’s never been done before…I really don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing…have to wait and see if it helps his basketball development or hinders it. I do however believe that learning about other cultures is very important in developing oneself as a human being….Adios Khadeem!!!
On a side note…so I dont have to make a new post for this….your boy Andrew Wiggins BLEW up last night against University of Charleston…34pts…18reb…8blks….YIKEEEESSSS!!!!!!

mikeyvthedonParticipantHe is definitely a stud. It was Charleston’s JV team, but, nonetheless, the kid is still only 16. HS this year should have some incredible match-ups going on. I know Andrew also killed it in his first game, on a team full of upperclass D1 talent. Seems like the makings of a huge HS career stateside for Wiggins. I only hope that Huntington gets a chance to play Simeon (Jabari Parker), Findlay, Gorman or Oak Hill in one of these tournaments. Could be pretty epic. Also, if they had a chance to be the team to finally beat St. Anthony’s, that would be crazy.

paradigmnParticipantObviously I am super stoaked about the HS basketball season (as well as college)….of course I am going to miss my NBA, but if you got a lemon….make lemonade!!!
I saw Max Preps rankings…Findlay Prep #1….I think thats the first rankings I seen with Findlay #1…and…I TOTALLY AGREE!!!! Bennett and Brandon Ashley in the front court together….WOW….also super athletic high flying Winston Shepard….and of course…a solid backcourt with Williams-Goss and none other than your own OREGON committ Dominc Artis running the point….this is def a solid squad!!!

ProudGrandpaParticipanti don’ think this is the case, but is Dominic Artis related to 1966 Texas Western player Orsten Artis? If so, that would be an interesting coincidence, Lattin’s grandson making news days after Artis commits to Oregon.

mikeyvthedonParticipantHave heard nothing of the connection, even upon further Google inspection. Guessing, and this is a shot in the dark, that there are people who share the same last name, and are not related. Dominic could be related to Orsten, but seeing that he is from the Bay Area and Orsten lived in Gary, Indiana, they more than likely just share the same last name.
I also thought that this guy might be related to a certain NBA player, but alas, it appears it is not so:

mikeyvthedonParticipantKhadeem Lattin (Houston/Canaris Basketball Academy) is blazing a path for himself to college basketball that is non-traditional.The grandson of David Lattin — one of the famed players from Texas Western — made the decision as a sophomore to change his developmental path by heading overseas. His destination was Canaris Basketball Academy in Spain, located off the coast of Morocco. When Lattin made the move, it was questioned, scrutinized and caught many by surprise.

John F. Rhodes for ESPN.comKhadeem Lattin said that Arizona is the school pursuing him the most. This spring, he’s back in the United States playing with his travel team, Houston Hoops. We caught up with him in Dallas at the Nike EYBL where he talked about his experience and whether or not he’ll go back for another season.
DT: What was it like?
KL: “It was a unique experience, being away from my family. My parents were only there the first two months, so it made me grow up fast and learn stuff about myself. I grew as a basketball player and as a person.”
DT: Would you go back?
KL: “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life and definitely one of the hardest things I’ll ever do in my life. Most likely I’ll be going back.”
DT: What was school like?
KL: “I’m in the British school system, which means we do what you do in the American school system, but the ages are different each year.”
DT: Basketball-wise, what was good about it?
KL: “It’s like being in the military. It’s routine. It’s wake up at five, school, workout, conditioning, and workout again. That’s one day, but it’s everyday, except for Sundays.”
DT: How many games did you play?
KL: “When I got there we were just starting the season. We played maybe two games a week. There, you don’t have a high school team. You have more of a club team that partners with the high school team.”
DT: How much older was the competition?
KL: “Most of the guys had me by two or three years. When we played really good teams they had me by four. I was playing men.”
DT: Have you made the adjustment back to AAU ball?
KL: “When I left [the U.S.] I was playing a much faster game. When I went to play European basketball, I was definitely pulling back more skill-wise. Now, I have to get used to [AAU ball again] because I’m still bouncing back from the slower game.
"With a team that’s as guard heavy as [Houston Hoops], with all the superstars and this being only my second time with the team … of course there’s frustration when I’m sitting on the bench but it’s something I have to mature to and find my spot on the team and play more minutes and stuff.”
DT: Why did you go to Canaris?
KL: “We went to kind of give me a shortcut to being better. There, it’s very routine with good solid workouts and conditioning to where it’s almost pass-out workouts. The coach is insane, he pushes us to our limits every time we touch the floor.”
DT: Did schools come to see you?
KL: “A few schools came over, but not just to look at me. LSU, Florida, St. Mary’s, Portland and a few schools. I’ve been talking to Georgetown.”
DT: Who is recruiting you the hardest?
KL: “Arizona. Because my situation being that I left, I could be bumped up a year. Arizona’s pretty much said that whether I’m 2013 or 2014 they’ll give me a scholarship.”
DT: Are you Class of 2013?
KL: “I’m not too sure. My parents and I are still deciding about it but we’ve got that leeway because of the academics there. I could graduate in 2013 because of the school system I’d have all my American high school credits but if I wanted to stay in the English school system then I could do an extra year and be 2014 and still only be playing four years. We’re still deciding on what we want to do.”
DT: If you could rewind the clock, would you do it again?
KL: “Definitely. I’ve grown so much. It’s got me in a state of mind that I could be fine wherever I go and whoever is coaching me.”
